10 Things That Terrify Bookworms!

There are many things that frighten us bookworms.

And since Halloween is tomorrow, it’s the perfect time to discuss all of the things that keep us up late at night. Sometimes. Forget witches and ghosts, here are some things that really are scary.

1. TBRs- drowning in them, to be exact.

I know this one is fairly, obvious, but how could I not use it? We’re all dying a slow and painful death from our TBR.

me waving goodbye as i am covered by the books from my tbr

I actually have a pretty low TBR (only 58 wow) because I only started using Goodreads recently. Buuuut, as a whole, the bookworm community has a giant TBR list. And they only get bigger.arrow

2. The last pages of a book

Reading the end of a book is most definitely scary.

Especially if a) I can tell that it’s not going to end how I want it to. It’s the worst when there are 8 pages left and I know that’s not enough time for the conflict to be resolved. I don’t want a cliffhanger, or an unresolved book. I need answers! 😉

Or, if b) I don’t want it to be over. Sometimes I’ll just hide a book away in the dark crevices of my desk junk drawer where it will never resurface again…then I don’t have to face the pain of it actually ending.

3. Books that hold too many expectations

A sequel to my favorite book. The conclusion to an amazing series. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, for example. (My thoughts on that are for another post…)

I’m always slightly scared to read books that I have a lot of expectations for, just because I’m scared they won’t measure up.

4. The death of characters we hold dear

I’d list all the characters I loved that ever died, but…oh wait, this blog post would be way too long. And way too sad. We’d all be crying at the end.

Instead, let’s just have a moment of silence and remember the characters we have lost.

5. Too many books, not enough space

Guys. My bookshelf is full. Repeat. My bookshelf is full.

That means, until I get rid of some books (not going to happen) or find alternate book storage areas (I’m working on it), I cannot buy more books.

hey my shelf is pretty though

This is sad, and also very, very scary. I’m hoping for a miracle, such as my bookshelves multiplying overnight.

6. Reading books for school

No matter how good the book is, if I am forced to read it for school, there is a 99.999999% chance I will hate it.

harsh, yes, but also true

I don’t know why, but there’s something about being told I have to read a book, and that I have no choice. I love to read…until someone tells me I have to.

Okay, so there are some exceptions to this. I loved The Outsiders and Stargirl, but honestly? Besides those two, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book I genuinely enjoyed in school. arrow

7. The mistreatment of books

Don’t dog ear books. Don’t crack their spines on purpose. Don’t leave them lying around where an animal could carry them off. Don’t rip them. It makes me so sad! I understand that books get old and have injuries from love (trust me, I have quite a few messed up books because I’ve read them so much), but please do not purposely mistreat books. Or even accidentally. Just don’t.

(Okay, rant over.)

8. The sheer amount of books that we will never be able to read

It’s enough to make one cry that as many times as I may go to the library, as many years as I may live, I will only read a tiny fraction of all the books in the world.

It’s sort of like thinking about infinity. All it does is make confused, and insignificant and very upset. 😉 I prefer not to think about all the books I’m missing out on and instead focus on all the books I will get to read, but I thought this was worth putting on the list.

9. Judgement for reading

Sometimes I feel very judged for reading.

Maybe this is just me?? But it feels like I am the only one in my school who likes to read. The only one who actually reads for fun. Because it’s fun.

Reading in public (mainly at school) just makes me feel awkward and a little embarrassed, even though it shouldn’t. I decided to include this one because it definitely counts as terrifying, and maybe other people can relate to this, too.

10. The price of books

I don’t have a money tree in my yard. Give me one and I’ll be your best friend. I am not made of money. I! don’t! have! money! at! all!

But I love books.

And booksellers like to make books pricey. I understand- I mean, take a look at these beauties. Hardcover, glossy covers, pristine pages.

I can admit that they are worth the price. However, it terrifies me to think that someday when I’m an adult and living on my own, I might not be able to control myself. What if I spend all my money on books and forget about basic necessities?!

I hope you enjoyed this post! I had a lot of fun thinking up reasons for this. 🙂 Thanks for reading! And, thank you all for 95 followers. Almost to 100, which is so crazy.❤️

What terrifies you, as far as reading goes? Do you agree with some of my reasons? Are you drowning in your TBR? Would you want to hear my thoughts on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? What are you going to be for Halloween? I hope to chat with you in the comments!

  1. As a bookworm, charity shops are your best friend. I save so much money by buying books in them. But they sometimes don’t have a certain book but they have all of the rest of the series! It is pure chance really.

  2. This is such a great post, especially for Halloween! And these are all so true that I can’t even begin to pick which one is the most terrifying! Though numbers one and eight are definitely up there.

  3. Great post! I can relate to just about everything on this list, and I do agree that they are very scary. I also love your use of Harry Potter references and gifs – that’s my fave series! I don’t have a huge TBR list, other than all the Jane Austen books, Charles Dickens books, Shakespeare plays, and, um… well, I guess I do have a big list. Oops! I haven’t read the Cursed Child yet but I heard it was very disappointing…

    • Thank you, Catharine! I’m glad you related, and that enjoyed the HP gifs…it’s my favorite too. 😊
I’ve been wanting to read more Jane Austen books, too! I’ve just read Pride & Prejudice, and I really enjoyed it.
Yes, the Cursed Child was a disappointment to me…I wouldn’t let it stop you from reading it, though. Harry Potter is Harry Potter. 😉

  4. I also detest reading books for school! With the exception of the Book Thief (which I read before it was assigned for school XD) I just don’t like reading for school.

    • Woohoo, glad to hear you relate!😉I read the Book Thief for school too, but it was during a World War 2 choice assignment and, like you, I’d already read it…so I don’t count it haha. Thanks for your sweet comment, Sapphire❤️

  5. Awesome post! And sadly very relatable. I always find myself procrastinating school books, even if I get to choose what book to read! I just don’t want to be told what and when to read *shrug*. Once I literally read a school book twenty four hours before I had to start a report on it…… Not my best plan. However, the book was so fresh in my mind that I did ace that paper, haha. ;P

  6. This is so cool. I only started being a bookworm like 2 months ago and I think I’m already a bookworm😂 I started a blog recently too, mind checking it out?

  7. That was so fun to read! I need to meet more fellow bookworms! 😅
I agree about reading books for school–one of my favorite things about being homeschooled is that my mom totally understands and never forces me to read novels! 🙌
