5 Reasons Why I Still Read (& Love) Middle Grade Fiction

Yes, I admit it. I still love to read Middle Grade fiction.

It seems like I should have outgrown it by now. And though I love YA, there’s still a piece of my heart that will always belong to the genre of MG fiction.

Lately I’ve been realizing that I don’t see much about MG books on any blogs I read. I completely understand why- most book bloggers (at least that I know of) are in or close to their teenage years, and it’s natural to be more drawn to Young Adult books.

So while I definitely see why it’s happening, it makes me a little sad. As an avid rereader and lover of books from a young age, MG has and will always have a really important part in my life.

Why, you ask? Well, today I’m going to be sharing 5 reasons MG fiction has my heart. Let’s get started, shall we? 😉

1. They’re familiar and comforting

For me, reading a MG book is like hugging an old friend.

It doesn’t matter if I’ve read the book before or if it’s my first time, I just feel like I’ve known the book forever. Wow I’m really weird.

Middle grade books give me the feeling of reading wrapped up in a blanket while it’s snowing outside, with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand. It makes me feel at home. It reminds me of my childhood.

2. I love rereading

It’s no surprise that I love rereading? I’ve only mentioned it about 10392048 times on this blog. Sorry not sorry.

But seriously, rereading is the best. I love getting to revisit characters, go back to a familiar setting, and let all the memories wash over me. It’s so comforting to me to read a book I’ve already read and just go along with the characters again. *happy sigh*

I mainly reread Middle Grade fiction. (You know, your Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, A Series of Unfortunate Events…more on these later.) That’s one of the main reasons I continuously read MG, because I’m always rereading something.

3. They’re written for children

I love YA, don’t get me wrong.

But sometimes I wish there was a happy medium between MG and YA. A lot of the time I feel like there is absolutely no Young Adult book anywhere without any curse words or adult content.

I realize that since YA is for young adults, the language and content will be more mature. Still, I love reading MG and getting to read books that don’t have bad language or content, just as a breath of fresh air.

4. They leave me feeling full of happiness

I just feel so…full after reading Middle Grade. Of course I love books that tear my heart apart (I’M LOOKING AT YOU TBDATE), but everyone once in a while I want to see a happy ending.

Middle Grade books almost always offer that happy ending.

After reading a MG book filled with adventure and lovable characters, I feel so satisfied. It makes me incredibly happy to read Middle Grade.❤️

5. Some of my all-time favorites are found in MG

As everyone knows (the whole world may know at this point), I LOVE HARRY POTTER. And Percy Jackson. And the Mysterious Benedict Society. And A Series of Unfortunate Events. And the Mother-Daughter Book Club, and countless other books.

I can’t imagine a time when I won’t love these books.

No matter what season of life I am, what my circumstances are, what other amazing books I read, I know that I will always love these books. They will always be books I know I can turn to for a lovely story.

I have found a few books in YA that I feel the same way about (coughSTARFISH), but the majority of my all-time favorites are actually Middle Grade.

And that concludes my (somewhat sort) post. 😉 Middle Grade books are one of my most favorite things in this world, and will always be.

Oh, and I’m so sorry for missing last week’s post. I have two more weeks of school left, but my teachers have decided to pile a lot of projects up on us and I just had so much homework and other things going on, so I wasn’t able to post. I can’t wait until summer, when I’ll have all the time in the world to blog!

  1. TOTALLY AGREE with everything in this post! and the part about the “THIS IS ME trying to find a clean YA” just completely popped out to me. YES, it’s so hard to find a YA book with not that much adult content. and when you do, you’re like scoreee! and yes, MG books are just comforting and happy and I love re-reading them too!

  2. Wonderful post! I have to admit that I read mostly young adult books, even if I’m not a teenager anymore (unfortunately haha). I haven’t really tried middle grade books, but I feel like I should now? Also, I have seen some bloggers around loving middle grade books and it makes me want to try it out, too – your post just convince me that I should a bit more haha 🙂

  3. Like you, I still love MG Fiction. To be honest, I read more MG Fiction than YA Fiction! I find that YA Fiction doesn’t really suit me (yet) but that’s maybe coz I’m still in my early teens and I still have a long way more to being a YA 😛 Seriously though, MG Fiction is the most relatable and my bookshelves are filled with them.

  6. I think it’s been a really long time since I read MG (not counting rereading HP and PJO :P), but the last time I picked up a new (for me) MG it was too childish for me to enjoy it. I do think that was more the book than the genre though, because I don’t have that problem with HP or PJO at all. I still have four weeks of school left until summer break (if I pass all my exams ahhh) but it feels so much longer than that haha. Good luck with the remainder of school!

  7. I also love MG! I wish others talked about it more around the blogosphere but, I understand why we don’t. Personally, I’ excited to read Nevermoor and to finish Ice Wolves. They both sound really interested and I’m excited to read a bunch more MG this year!

  10. I totally agree, Olivia! I still love middle grade, and I can’t find hardly any YA that I really love…except The Giver and On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. 😁 I mostly just read old books, like Dickens (💜) and the Bronte sisters, and middle grade.

  12. I think that everything I read is Middle-Grade Fiction? I have been paying more attention to book reviews recently to try and find some good books to read. It’s hard to tell from a blurb sometimes what types of romance are included, so by reading them, I can probably find out. Maybe I’ll eventually get to read YA books that I’ll love!

    • A lot of what I read is also middle grade! If you’re having trouble knowing, you can always look on Goodreads to check, that’s what I do a lot of the time.😂I hope you find YA books you enjoy soon, but also keep loving MG, because those are awesome too!

  14. aww this post made me so happy! I love rereading MG sometimes too, I love all your favorites-I was super into the Mother Daughter Book Club not too long ago and I love rereading them, they just make me feel warm and cozy and happy 🙂

All the cute relationships between the mothers and daughters, the daughters and their boyfriends, and just the whole series in general gives me a cozy feeling as well. Thank you for your comment!💞

  17. Totally agree, Olivia, we need more middle grade in our lives! I read MG to both my daughters every night–currently finished Percy Jackson and the Olympians with one and going through some of the Ramona books with the other. Keep talking about MG and you’ll lead the way!!

  18. I completely agree that one of the reasons why I like MG so much is because of the lack of “adult content”. (This coming from an adult! It’s been a long time since I was actually in middle grade.) I also like that they usually have happy endings. Not that I absolutely require a happily-ever-after, but I don’t need to be depressed after reading a book.

    The other thing is that a well-written children’s book is written on several levels. One level is for the child to appreciate. But another level is for the adult. (After all, it’s usually an adult who is writing the book!)

    • I agree with you so, so much! MG is like a breath of fresh air. I also agree about the happy endings- I do like sad books occasionally, but it’s nice to see some happy!

  20. Interesting! I see why you love them so. I have never really been into MG, to be honest. I think that’s because I didn’t really like reading all too much when I was younger. I didn’t fall in love with reading until later in life, so then I was past the age of MG. Therefore, I don’t have any fond memories or any attachments to any MG books. I stick to YA, NA, and Adult.

  21. MG is SO comforting, and often way more humorous and entertaining than YA. To be honest, the only reason I read mostly YA is because (apart from the fact that I’m still considered YA) the romantic in me NEEDS romance. xD Which would be weird in MG, yeah? But the way they’re written is just so fun and also educational, which is fantastic. Percy Jackson is my all-time favorite series. 🙂

    • Ahh yes, I agree! MG has that “adventure” storyline that’s so interesting to read. 🙂 I also love YA contemporary romances (most of the time), so that’s probably one of the main reasons I read YA as well. Thank you for your comment, Aimee!
