What Does It Take For Me to Cry Over Books? // + Books I’ve Shed Tears Over

You could say I’m a pretty emotional reader.

Every bookworm is different- some cry over everything, some over nothing. I’d say I’m somewhere in between. It’s complicated. 😉 Today I’m going to be talking about what is takes for me to actually shed real tears over words written on pieces of paper- otherwise known as books.

I’ve talked a little bit (in random posts I think?) about some books that made me cry, and in this post I’ll be doing that yet again. Because who doesn’t want to hear about a lot of books that will make them sob their eyes out??

Without further ado, let’s get into the post!

So, you ask, what does it take for me to cry in a book?

The truthful answer is- not much.

There are a few key moments that really trigger my tear ducts. SUCH AS the fact that I’m listening to It’s Quiet Uptown right now and Hamilton is singing to Eliza and I just can’t, okay?! Okay, Hamilton rant is over. Wait she just took his hand. I’m a puddle right now.

Anyway, back to books. Ahem. I’m going to explain a few of the instances in which I can’t help but turn into a blubbery mess over fictional characters. It happens to everyone, right?

1. When a character I love dies

I know this one is so cliché and of course this is on the list, but how could I not put it on here?? Sometimes I feel like the author is actually tearing my heart apart.

This is definitely the biggest reason I find myself crying in books.

Characters die way too much, and when it’s someone like Umbridge (even though she didn’t die in the series?? why??) I kind of just shrug. But when it’s a precious character that I love, I’m inconsolable.

This is accurate footage of me when one of my favorite characters dies.

I’d like to say that if I’m ever an author, I won’t kill off any of my characters. But I don’t know if that’s a promise I can keep, unless I end up writing books about My Little Ponies or something.

2. When something horrible happens to a character

Sometimes this can even be worse than death.

Whether it’s because of abuse (I’m thinking of Julian from A List of Cages here and PRECIOUS BECK from A Thousand Perfect Notes), assault, or anything else, I can’t stand to watch my children endure something horrible.

I’ll usually start crying, because it’s just too sad, and while I know it’s not real, I know that there are people in the real world that are going through the same thing, and that’s what makes it so sad. *deep breath* And if my precious characters start to cry…I’m a goner, you can expect a hurricane of tears from me.

3. If I’m emotionally shocked

If anyone has read We Were Liars, and knows about the giant plot twist, then you understand what it means to be emotionally shocked by book.

I was in complete shock after reading that book, and it made me cry real tears because of how unexpected and emotional it was.

I’m still in shock about it! I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever be able to reread We Were Liars because it made me cry so much and I couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened.

Well, if you haven’t read We Were Liars, I apologize for getting you properly curious about what happened…but maybe now it’s more clear what ’emotionally shocked’ means and why I cried because of it. Also, what other books shocked you that much?

4. When my OTP breaks up

Ah, yes. Occasionally this does happen.

For the most part, I manage to ship the correct people? Meaning, I don’t usually get my heart broken by books because my OTP usually ends up together. Percabeth, Ronmione, etc.

However, when two characters end up with the wrong people or break up or even temporarily break up, I can’t help but cry. I just get emotionally attached to my OTPs in books and TV shows, I’m sorry.

5. If the characters are crying, too

In real life, I’m not a sympathetic cryer- if someone around me is crying, it doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll start crying, too.

But if a book character is crying…

Image result for that's another story gif

How am I supposed to stand it when they’re crying? And distraught? I become sad and distraught too. Now, I don’t always cry if a character does, but in most cases, I just get so emotional and can’t help it.

Those are the top five reasons I cry in books- it doesn’t take too much to make me shed some tears. Now, I’ll be sharing some of the books that I’ve cried over recently!

And these are just a few examples I could think of off the top of my head. They’re all books I’ve read (or reread, in the case of Harry Potter) within the year.

That concludes this post! As you can see, I’m quite emotional when it comes to books. 😉 Somehow I don’t think that will ever change.

Also, before you go- I wanted to thank you all for helping me reach 300 followers a few days ago! Your support means everything, and I can’t ever thank you enough.💓I’ll be trying to think of something special to do for this milestone. I can’t believe it, so thank you all again!

Do you cry because of books? Why or why not? What books have you cried over before? I’d love to chat with you in the comments.

  1. DEATH. YES. I cried during a Keeper of the Lost Cities book, and I cried at the end of the fourth movie of Harry Potter that we were watching last week. 😭

  2. I’ve read A List of Cages and the Fault in Our Stars and they’ve made me cry, too! A list of a Cages got happy and sad tears, which to me makes any book an instant five stars! I think my favorite books make me cry happy or bittersweet tears. Great post! It’s amazing how much made up worlds and characters can move people.

    • Ohh, I love those books both SO much! They’re tear jerkers, that’s for sure. For some reason, I don’t usually cry happy tears in books, but I do smile and squeal with excitement.😂
Thank you Madeline, and thank you for reading!

  3. I actually cried while reading a book just yesterday. The book was A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. I’m really not sure what makes me cry in a book. Death and horrible things don’t always make me cry, neither does people breaking up. People crying- no, characters getting emotional- yea, I think that’s what makes me cry. Books that have made me cry: Fish in a Tree, A Man Named Ove, and I can’t remember any more.

  4. Oh I am a big, emotional reader as well haha I cry and get emotional a lot -I think that emotional shock you mentioned in We Were Liars is probably the worst kind of shock though. I did not see that coming at all and I burst into tears and, well, the book, I loved it, but also it took me a little while to get over it haha. But those are the best books, aren’t they? 🙂
I loved and cried while reading TFIOS and A List of Cages as well. A Thousand Perfect Notes sounds intense, I can’t wait to read it and cry about it hahaha 🙂
    Lovely post! ❤

    • I’m glad to see a fellow emotional reader, haha, that’s definitely me too.🙂I agree about We Were Liars- I don’t think I’ll ever get over it! I remember just staying at the page with my jaw literally dropped open and then I just started crying. It’s amazing how books can do that to you!
Ohh, both of those are so good (and extremely emotional). ATPN is just amazing, and I hope you get to read it soon and experience all the emotions that go along with it.
      Thank you so much, Marie!💓

  5. I tend to get super emotional over books, but it takes quite a bit for me to actually shed tears. That being said, Adam Silvera’s books never fail to make me cry so hard. Seriously. EVERY TIME. He really knows how to make it hurt. 😭😭😭

  6. I love it when a book makes me cry. It means I’m invested in the characters.

Big crying books for me: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women. And yes, it’s because of certain characters’ deaths.

However, I found it interesting that I went to see a play based on The Magician’s Nephew recently. (Spoiler: Nobody dies in that book.) And yet, when they brought Aslan onstage just before the end of Act I, I felt myself tearing up. Like: Oh, it’s Aslan!

    • So true! I really do have to love the characters to cry.

Oh, I read both of those a long time ago (for the first time), so I can’t remember if I cried. I think I did cry in Little Women, for obvious reasons…

Awe! That sounds like it was more of a happy cry, maybe because Aslan is such an iconic character. I don’t think I’ve ever cried in a play (though if I saw Hamilton I would cry) but I cry frequently in shows and movies.

Thank you for the kind comment!❤️

  7. omg this is like WAY too relatable. I feel like why bookworms become so attached to a book/character will be a question no one will be able to solve. Tbh, I’ve only shed “actual” tears a few mere times, but I cry a LOT internally. Sometimes I feel like my eyes are just not capable of crying??

Like Jules from Three Dark Crowns. I totally get it when you say that something bad happens to your fav character. Literally when I read to that part when Jules is ridiculed and hurt, I’m like how can this happen to her, she’s literally my CHILD. So yes, I guess I’ve become a mother to many book characters, but I don’t want to become one in real life 😂 Lovely post Olivia!! *claps*

    • Aww, I’m so glad you could relate! 😉 That’s such an accurate statement, I’ll probably never know why figments of someone else’s imaginations can affect me so much. XD I cry internally all the time in books, too, haha.

I haven’t read or heard of Three Dark Crowns, but I looked it up and it looks really good! I’m trying to get more into fantasy so maybe I’ll check it out. HAHA, characters are definitely my children.

      Thank you Kimberly!💓

  8. Why do we enjoy having small bundles of paper and ink stomp on our hearts?? Why is a book that makes you cry such a wonderful thing?? I don’t know. But it IS.
Books that have made me cry: The Deathly Hallows, Orbiting Jupiter, Code Name Verity, A Separate, Peace, Nicholas Nickleby… And others that I can’t think of right now.
Ack! Beck and Julian! I want to bake them cookies and knit them sweaters.
Eliza just took his hand??!! AHHHHHHH. Now I must cry.

  9. Lovely post, Olivia ❤️
Even though I’m a bookworm, I have only cried during one book, at the very end. it’s called A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and sooooooo touching! The ending breaks my heart though 💔

  10. Ahh how did I just see this post! Awesome post! ❤ I cry so often when I read books and I actually like it when I do because it tells me that the book is powerful and well written. I will cry when something bad happens to a character, or when they feel sad. Also, I will cry when a series is finished and I realize there will no longer be another story with the characters I have grown to love! And finally yes, I will also cry when I am so shocked at a plot twist (We Were Liars was Woahh)

    • Awe, thank you so much, Sissi!💓So true, getting emotional in books is proof of how real and wonderful the book is. I sometimes cry when the book is over, too! Oh yes, that plot twist in We Were Liars was so shocking. I’m still not over it. XD

  11. Ohhhh I cry so easily as well 😂 I remember when I read The Fault in Our Stars a few years ago oh my goodness. My mom came downstairs to find me sobbing on the couch, tears streaming down my face and she seriously asked me ‘what is it? is it your allergies???’ my hayfever is not that bad 😂😂😂
