10 Struggles All Bookworms Understand

As bookworms, we all face many struggles.

It’s not all hardcover books and ships sailing and five star reviews, that’s for sure. All bookworms have their fair share of struggles, and today Rose and I are going to be bringing ten of those to light. 😉

This post is a collab with the lovely Rose from A Purpose of Winged Dogs! She posts about books, writing, and more and is always up for a Taylor Swift reference. We’re definitely kindred spirits. Definitely check out her amazing blog and read her half of the post here! I’ll be talking about five of the struggles here, and she’s talking about the other five over on her blog.

I’m so happy to be collabing with Rose, and really excited to talk about some bookworm struggles with you all. Without further ado, let’s get started!

1. Waiting for a book release

Let me tell you the struggle of waiting for a book.

When a bookworm is waiting for a book, they’re feeling all sorts of uncontrollable feels.

First of all, you’re excited. You can’t wait to read the book. But then you get nervous- because what if it doesn’t live up to your expectations?!? And then you get scared, because disappointing books are just horrible.

All the emotions are building up, and you’re getting stressed- and then you’re thinking it might have been better if you’d just discovered this series or book in a few years, when all the books were already out and there was no waiting involved anymore.

And that’s just for one single book release. This same cycle repeats over and over with every book you’re waiting for!

2. Wishing upon a star for free books

Libraries are my best friends.

That’s because, besides the odd Barnes & Noble gift card, I’m a student with no income and usually I don’t have money to buy books with. I need a job with book benefits. All broke bookworms can relate to the struggle of having no money to buy books.

Anyone else stare up the sky and wish on all the stars up there for free books to rain down on you? …that’s just me? Okay then, moving right along. 😉

3. Not stepping out of your comfort zone

I’m extremely guilty of not stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to reading.

I love my safe little bubble of YA contemporary! Maybe sometimes I’ll venture into some fantasy or historical fiction, but I always hurry back quickly. The lands of non-fiction and graphic novels…you’ll hardly ever find me there.

I always feel like I should go read a non-fiction book or something, but then I don’t want to? Even though I know I need to? It’s a constant struggle, my friends.

4. Our TBRs…

A universal struggle of bookworms is the monster that is our TBR.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my TBR. Without it, I’d probably never actually get around to reading books. I wouldn’t be able to have a plan of what I want to read not that I actually ever follow those plans. I’d never know what to get at the library. I wouldn’t be able to keep track of book recommendations.

However much I love it, it also just gets so large and scary sometimes. I like small, tame things, okay? I’m 99% sure I’m not in control of it anymore.

5. Waiting for your library to get books

First of all, there’s the struggle of waiting for people to return the books you want to read. Of course, I’m happy that the books are being enjoyed, but I just want to enjoy them! right! then!

Then, there’s also the struggle of waiting for your library to get books. Whether it’s because you requested it or because it’s a new release, there’s always that waiting period. It’s a constant struggle, my friends.

And those are my five struggles! Please go check out Rose’s post and show her blog some love while you’re over there, because she really deserves it. 🙂

I also just wanted to note that there are a lot of struggles we missed! We talked about lighter struggles instead of talking about heavier problems bookworms face (like no representation, not having libraries or certain books internationally, etc.). I just thought I would touch on the fact that there are tons of more serious issues that bookworms are facing, and our post was geared towards some of the lighter ones. But, the heavier ones are super important and not to be ignored.

Now that my rant is over…

Do you have these struggles, too? Which ones? On the flip side, what is something amazing about being a bookworm? I’d love to chat with you in the comments.

  1. Ahhh, so true!! 😝😎😂 Totally can relate as a book lover! I’m kinda in love with historical fiction, but I have a hard time leaving it so I get the concept! 😎😝👍

  2. Yes, I relate to those library struggles! I love my library and I’m so glad I have a local library but it’s super small so it takes a million years for them to get new releases!

  3. Oh, TBRs… but even though it’s awful that there never will be enough time to read everything, I still think it would be exponentially worse for there to not be enough to read. Ahh, there’s so many amazing things about being a bookworm! One of them being that it’s very fun to talk to other people about books . :))

    • That is so true and an extremely valid point! I agree with you 100%. Having too many books and not enough time is way better than too much time and not enough books. 😉 I think talking to other people about books is one of the best things about being a bookworm! (And a book blogger. XD)

  4. Oh this is such a fun collab, I love it 🙂 I think that waiting for the book to release has to be one of the worst things, especially when it’s an author you love or a sequel you’ve been expecting for so long. Sometimes the wait feels ENDLESS, it’s terrible hahaha. 🙂

  5. Yes I like Taylor Swift too! I agree with you about waiting for a book, that’s why I always try to read a series after it’s complete; I can’t wait for the next book! I wish I could get free books to keep, that would be awesome. Wowowow we are so similar because I always tend to also read contemporary fiction but I do try to read a variety as well! I like the occasional historical fiction and dystopian, and I hope to read more fantasy. Amazing post Olivia!

    • Taylor Swift is amazing, and I love finding fellow Swifties. 😉
Yes yes yes, reading a series that’s already finished is amazing because you can just pick up the next book right away! There are some series I read where I wonder what I would have done if I didn’t have access to the next book right after reading the one prior to it. It’s kind of like watching a show on Netflix instead of when it’s airing on television, haha. XD
Free books would be amazing! Ooh, yes, contemporary is my favorite, but I’m trying to branch out more lately.
Thank you Sissi, and thank you for reading!❤️

  6. Aahh I relate so much to this!! I definitely struggle with waiting for my most anticipated booms to release (and then I end up procrastinating on the actual reading of them 😂). And free books is such an issue with me, too! I’m also a student with no job or source of income, so buying books with my own money is really hard. I really want to start looking into bookstore-related jobs though, because I would love to work in a bookstore and also get money 👀😂 Great post, Olivia! (And I love that you included that little note at the end about “more serious” issues readers face! 💕)

    • I’m so glad you could relate! 🙂 (Also, yay, so happy to see you back and I hope you had a great vacation!) Oh, procrastinating new releases is something I do, too…I’ll wait and wait for it and then…not read it.😂Yes, a job at a bookstore would be amazing! Maybe next summer I’ll look into that, or at the library. Though I don’t think libraries hire teenagers, but who knows, maybe. XD Thank you so much May, and thank you for your lovely comment!💓(Awe, yes, of course! I thought that was definitely important to note.)

  7. I have to be honest and say I am feeling very attacked about many of these 😂💛✨ They’re all so true! You definitely got them right. Great post!!

  8. “I need a job with book benefits.” <– I RELATE SO HARD CORE OH MY GOSH xD As someone who's starting her freshman year in college, it's so hard to find a job on campus that would pay for books (the library jobs are VERY competitive I cry). Libraries are such a great resource, though, although once a book becomes available into circulation, well… welcome to the Hunger Games of Book Holds.

  9. The struggles you mentioned are all so relatable!! I’m super impatient so waiting for a book to release is definitely one of my #1 struggles. That and wishing I could buy more books!! AND of course my TBR pile!!! I’ve been so tempted to just go through and delete random books of off my GR shelf lately. I KNOW I won’t even read most of them but I just leave them there in case I’ll change my mind someday…*sigh *

    • I’m so happy you could relate! YES, waiting for a book is just the worst kind of waiting. Oh my goodness, I feel you about the Goodreads shelf! I tried to clear out my TBR the other day but I only deleted like…five books.😂Thank you for the kind comment, Rachana!

  10. Ah, so true. What’s terrible is when several of these things collide: you’re waiting for a book to be released, and then it IS released, but you don’t have the money to buy it, so then you have to wait for the LIBRARY to buy it, but they don’t buy it for another SIX MONTHS and by then you’re in the middle of reading 4 other books and your TBR is glaring down at you menacingly but you still REALLY want to read the not-so-new anymore book- *hyperventilates*
One of the other struggles of being a bookworm is when you read a book that no one else you know has read. Because then there’s no one to rant to or rejoice with or cry over characters with. Hard times indeed.

    • Oh, no. You’ve just described my worst nightmare. XD No, but really- that sounds terrible! *hyperventilates too*
That is such a good one! I agree, you just have to keep all the feels bottled up inside of you and there’s no one to scream with you. So sad, and such a struggle.😭
Thank you for reading & commenting!
