My One Major Problem With Harry Potter + Other Thoughts // ft. Opinions on Snape, Harry’s Flaw, & More

So. It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with Harry Potter.

And if you didn’t know that yet- hi, I’m Olivia and my letter to Hogwarts got lost in the mail. I usually can’t go more than a few blog posts without mentioning Harry Potter one or two or twenty times. I’ve read the books and seen the movies more times than I can count, and my Harry Potter Pinterest board has 305 pins on it.

In short, I’m obsessed.

Recently, I decided it was time for another Harry Potter reread. I went through the books, and while I still absolutely love them and the magic hasn’t left at all, I noticed some of my opinions have changed about the book as I got older.

Today I’m going to be talking about a few random thoughts I had, as well as my one major problem with Harry Potter (that I hadn’t really noticed until this reread). Let’s get started! 🙂

Oh, and a quick side note. Read on if you want, but I will warn you of spoilers ahead! I will be discussing parts from various books and I wouldn’t want anything to ruin the magic of reading them for the first time if you haven’t yet.

I first read the Harry Potter books when I was eight, which seemed really old at the time but looking back, seems pretty young. How did I handle all the loss, oh my goodness.

As you can imagine, it was really different to read it now compared to when I was eight (though I’ve read it many times in between). I noticed a lot of things that never really clicked into place before! Some of my realizations were kind of funny, and others were much more…sirius. Please tell me someone sees what I did there.

All right, let’s get into it. Before I make more bad Harry Potter puns. XD

arrow

First off, I realized how clueless Harry is with girls. This is definitely one of my lighter realizations, but it’s so true and pretty hilarious! In The Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix, when he likes Cho, he literally is the most clueless human being ever.

He may the chosen one, but that doesn’t give him any advantage with talking to girls. It was just so great, funny, and relatable to see him have this flaw. I loved how J.K. Rowling made him just like any other teenage boy in this regard.

This is such an iconic moment in the movies…I can’t remember if it actually happened in the books? But I do know the books had so much more of his awkwardness. XD

arrow

Next, I really came to appreciate Molly Weasley. I used to only see her as just Ron’s mom, the nice lady who always made them food and had Harry over to stay at holidays.

Molly Weasley is so much more than that.

She’s the only mother figure in Harry’s life. Yes, he (eventually) has Sirius and Lupin, and he even has Dumbledore, but Molly is the only mom in his life. She takes care of him like he is her own child, and that’s just amazing. Like when she came to see him before the last part of the Triwizard tournament?? And sent him Christmas presents and Easter eggs and everything?? I love her. Also, we can never forget when Bellatrix tried to kill Ginny and Molly Weasley dominated.

Everything about the Horcruxes and Deathly Hallows finally made sense to me. I think this was the first time that I fully understand how Harry was the master of death and how the Elder Wand answered to him, and all that confusing stuff that they attempted to explain in the one all-white King’s Cross scene. *deep breath*

Image result for of course this is happening in your head gif

Anyway. It felt good to finally 100% understand everything, after so many years of only half-getting it.

arrow

I also realized that I really hate Severus Snape.

I know this is such a controversial topic! Don’t come for me. I have reasons. I don’t hate Snape because I think he’s evil. I don’t think he is an evil character. He was, after all, risking his life every single day to work for good.

He manipulated Voldemort. He lied to Voldemort. He lied right to the face of the most powerful dark wizard of all time! He lied to the most powerful dark wizard of all time who can tell when people are lying to you! That takes bravery, strength, and to me, proves that he is quote unquote “good.”

But. I still hate him.

He was a horrible teacher and a cruel person. He abused his students. He was Neville’s worst nightmare. He openly taunted his students. He had favoritism towards Slytherins. He blamed Harry for James Potter’s actions. He never got to know Harry for who he really is because all he could see in him was his father. He was jealous and possessive over a girl who never saw him as more than a friend. He got Lupin fired because of something that happened years ago. He was not nice.

Okay, maybe I shed a few tears whenever I think of, “After all this time? Always.” I do think Snape deserves recognition and praise for how he put everything on the line to fight against evil.

Image result for snape gif

But I don’t like him as a person. He was abusive and cruel, and I don’t know why it took me so long to realize how much I loathe him.

And I definitely can imagine James, Sirius, and Lupin completely screaming at Harry in the afterlife for naming one of his children after Snape. I KNOW WHY, but still. Albus Remus, anyone?!

arrow

I realized how truly young Harry, Ron, and Hermione were. When I was eight, they seemed so old to me. I didn’t think about how amazing it was that they accomplished all that they did, because they were practically adults in my eyes.

Looking back, now that I’m the age they were in the later books, I have so much more appreciation for all they did! Y’all. Harry was fourteen when he saw Voldemort return, fifteen when they went to the ministry, seventeen when he, Hermione, and Ron quit school to save the wizarding world.

It just goes to show that age isn’t everything. 😉 “Fame…isn’t…everything, Mr. Potter.”

arrow

Finally, and most importantly, I realized a huge problem I have with the Harry Potter series. I know, we’re all shocked that I have a complaint.

Image result for harry potter shocked gif

But for real, I am really disappointed in this series for failing to include one thing that is extremely important and a part of every day life- so why isn’t it a part of this iconic series? What I’m talking about is the lack of diversity.

It just doesn’t make sense to me that in a school full of children and teenagers, there wouldn’t be more diversity mentioned. They never talk about religious diversity, racial diversity, or identify any characters as LGBTQ+. Dumbledore doesn’t count because they didn’t talk about that in the book.

It just makes me sad that a lot of people don’t get to see themselves represented in Harry Potter. It would have been such a great opportunity for young kids to see themselves in a book they love. I wish that was different.

Also, a very valid point is that these books were published in the late 1990s to the early 2000s, when diversity in books wasn’t included as much. So it makes sense that Harry Potter wouldn’t have any and is typical of the time, but still disappointing nonetheless.

arrow

Those are just a few of the realizations and thoughts I had while rereading Harry Potter! I could keep going on and on, but this post is getting long and if you made it this far, wow, you’re amazing. XD

This post was honestly so fun to write. I have so much passion for these books, and the words just kept coming and coming (hence the length of this post!). Even though I am very disappointed in the lack of diversity, I know I will always love and cherish Harry Potter!

Here’s to hoping that they never lose their magic, and Hogwarts always feels like a second home to me and to all of you, too.⚡️

What are your thoughts on everything I talked about? Do you like Snape? Have you noticed the lack of diversity? Do you love Molly Weasley? I’d love to chat with you in the comments.

  1. Sometimes I like when books don’t touch on race, religion, gender, etc. It’s just kind of refreshing to just have a book where you don’t have to hear people complain when they weren’t represented correctly. I think there are enough other books for that. Nice list, though!

  2. I love this post! I read Harry Potter for the first time when I was 10. I honestly can’t believe everything I didn’t fully understand back then, and how much my opinions have changed over the years as well.

You’re right, Molly is SUCH an amazing character. I definitely didn’t appreciate her enough until recently. She’s one of my favorites now. I just absolutely love her.

Ahh the controversial topic of Snape! I liked how you explained your opinions on him because, yeah, he was awful to pretty much everyone. I could never bring myself to hate him though after the “always” 😭 Not that it makes up for his terrible traits, but that always got to me.

And I know right, why is there practically no diversity in this series?? It makes me so upset! There’s so many characters and you’d think that there would’ve been way more diversity/representation. I’d definitely agree, that’s my one big problem with the series as well.

    • Thank you so much, Brianna! I feel the same way about my first time reading it- I don’t think I really understood a lot that was going on?!

So much love for Molly.❤️I feel bad that I underappreciated her all these years, and I’m determined to not do that anymore. She’s like the ultimate mom!

Oh yes…Snape. XD I KNOW, even though I don’t like him, I still cry at “always.” AND because his patronus was a doe. *tear* I do love how JK Rowling put in little parts to let you see the good, moral side of him and to ease the hate a little bit.

I definitely agree with you! I mean, I know it was a long time ago, but still. There would have been so many opportunities for diversity with all the characters, like you said!

Thank you so much for this comment, Brianna! It was so kind and it just made me so happy to discuss Harry Potter with you.🤗

  3. Ahhh I love this post so much, Olivia!! ❤

I hardly ever write a blog post without referencing Harry Potter, so I feel you!! And I'm lowkey (or highkey) still waiting for my Hogwarts letter, so I feel your pain sdnfjdjksdf.

Your issues with HP speak to me on such a deep level, and thank you so much for not liking Snape as well! Because the reveal that he was in fact on Dumbledore's side does not excuse his personality, how he was such a mean, hateful person, and how he treated kids (!!!) and everyone else.

The lack of diversity is something I'm really disappointed with as well, but I also recognize how it was written a "long" time ago, and how in recent years, diversity is much more talked about &c., so I can't hold it against the series all too much.

This is such an amazing post & I really enjoyed reading it! Also, now that we’ve both finished our re-read … are you going to marathon the movies, too? 😉

    • Thank you, Lily! Ahh, you’re the sweetest.💓

What would a blog post be without a slight Harry Potter reference or gif?! I don’t think I’ll ever find out. XD Highkey waiting for my Hogwarts letter, too…

YES. Even though he was a secret agent and technically not evil, he was just such a mean person. I know every series needs to have some ‘villains’, and he’s just one of those, but that doesn’t mean I like him for it. XD

That is such a great point! Very true. Oh yes, I can’t hold it against the series tooo much- at this point nothing can diminish my love for Harry Potter, it just disappointed me.

Thank you, Lily, and thank you for reading! Ohh, I should. 😉 I actually just rewatched The Order of the Phoenix the other day (such a good movie!) so I should do the others soon…

  4. Interesting post, Olivia! I’ve always found Snape to be one of the most complex and fascinating characters, though I definitely take the point about his abusive nature. Alan Rickman was a superb choice of actor though – my favourite scene is in the Prisoner of Azkaban when he instinctively puts himself in front of Harry, Ron and Hermione after Lupin wolfs out!

With regards to diversity, I will mention that the first book was published in 1997. Not that diversity wasn’t an issue back then, but that’s more than 20 years ago, and though I was only 3 at the time, I’m pretty sure it didn’t have the awareness it has now. Even the Deathly Hallows was published 11 years ago, and the world has come a LONG way since then!!

I can understand how the lack of racial and/or LGBT+ diversity is disappointing to some, but I suppose you do have to also take into account the state of the world in the time the stories were published. Sure, there could have been more diversity, but that could be said of most books published in the 00s and earlier! What I DON’T like is how JK Rowling has tried to “go back” and claim that certain characters had certain sexualities etc. which weren’t really canon? I mean…why not be upfront and admit it’s something you need to work on?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you! 🙂 Snape is such a complex character, I think it’s so interesting how he’s not obviously good or obviously bad, he’s somewhere in the middle and it takes quite a while for you to learn his true character. Oh yes, I loved Alan Rickman as Snape! Even though I don’t love Snape, I always enjoyed all his scenes and portrayals in the books and movies.

You make such a great point! I didn’t really think about that too much, but after reading your comment and a few others I put a note in my post about it. 🙂 Thank you for pointing that out, it IS important to remember that things have changed a lot since the books came out, and maybe if they were published today then there might have been more diversity.

Oh, yes, like with Dumbledore. I do appreciate how she is trying to add in diversity where it wasn’t before, but also see your point in saying that it would be better to just admit to needing to work on it.

Thank you so much for your comment, I really enjoyed reading it and hearing all your thoughts!

  5. This is very well written Olivia! I think Snape is an interesting character, he’s very complex and I can’t decide whether I liked him or not, but I also disliked the fact that Harry named his kid after him when there are Sirius, Remus, or heck, even Arthur Weasley to choose from. The lack of diversity has been discussed a lot but bear in mind that this series was written 20 years ago, where the conversation is not as developed as now. It’s no excuse because there are other books released in that era, despite small numbers, that include diversity. But maybe JKR chose to take the safer options, seeing that the series itself has already been banned a lot for having witchcraft as its central theme. JKR can’t change what’s already written, but she has a way to redeem it in the current Fantastic Beast series, so we’ll see. Great post!

    • Thank you, Tasya!💓Yes, even though I hate Snape, I love his complexity and how interesting he is- if that makes sense. XD He’s definitely an AMAZINGLY well-written character. I agree (though Harry’s son James’ middle name was Sirius, so at least he covered Sirius!), I guess he just had too many influential men in his life to pick… That’s a great point, and I added a part in my post recognizing the time period and how that probably affected the amount of diversity in the series! Ohh, I’m so interested to see if the Dumbledore-Grindelwald relationship is explored in the newest Fantastic Beasts. Thank you Tasya, and thank you for sharing all your thoughts, I loved reading them! 🙂

  6. I have to reread Harry Potter now! But I agree with you when it comes to Snape. I respect him, but I don’t like him as a person. Like I don’t know if his motives justify all the cruel things he does. But like I said, it’s time for another reread! Fun post. ❤️

    • Ahh, you should, it’s just so amazing! It’s definitely the perfect series to reread. 😉 I respect Snape too, and think he’s such a complex and well-written character, I just feel the same as you, and can’t like him as a person. I hope you enjoy your reread, and thank you again for reading & commenting!💗

  7. I absolutely loved everything you said about the series! Harry Potter is my all time favorite series and I really need to read it again haha 😉 I completely agree with you about disliking Snape… he obviously has favorites and I hate that he doesn’t treat his students equally. I’ve never thought about the lack of diversity in the books until you mentioned it, it’s a very interesting point! Ahhhh I can’t wait to reread the series!! 🤗

    • Thank you, Liz! Yes, you need to reread it. 😉 So true! Snape is definitely not a contender for anyone’s favorite teacher, except for the Slytherins. XD I can’t wait for you to reread it so we can talk about it all over again!

  8. I agree about Snape. A sad backstory is, well, sad. But that doesn’t justify all his mean actions over the course of seven books. Gotta say, I’m glad he didn’t get Lily; he didn’t deserve her, and he would have been a worse father than the Dursleys. (I’m sirius! 😂)

    Liked by 1 person

    • I’m with you 100%, Julia. I do love how JK Rowling gave you his backstory, so you understand the bitterness of his past, but it doesn’t excuse his abusive and cruel qualities. Oh yes, I’m siriusly glad he didn’t get Lily, too!😂

  9. Ha! I love the scene in Order of the Phoenix when Cho tells Harry that the next Hogsmead trip is on Valentines day and Harry has no idea why she’s telling him. So utterly clueless. I laugh so much in that scene 🙂
Yes!! I love Molly Weasley! I love how she basically adopts Harry into the family. And the scene where she and Bill come to see him before the last part of the Tri-Wizard tournament?? When Harry’s not in any hurry because he knows he doesn’t have any family to come see him- AND THEN MRS. WEASLEY IS THERE AND I JUST WANT TO CRY. I also love the part with Mrs. Weasley’s boggart where you see her worst fear is losing the members of her family- and Harry is included in that. AND THEN I WANT TO CRY AGAIN.
    A-hem.
    On a different note: Snape.
Yes, Snape had a hard childhood. Yes, he went undercover to get information about Voldemort and risked his life and all that.
This does not change the fact that he is abusive to his students and cruel to basically everyone. A lot of people don’t seem to grasp this. Some people think Lily should have ended up with him, to which I say: NOOOOOOOO. If he REALLY loved Lily, when he wouldn’t have told Voldemort, “Hey, you can kill her husband and her baby, just don’t hurt her, ok?” That is not love. Also, he is SO CRUEL to NEVILLE. And Hermione?? The scene where Hermione gets a hex cast on her teeth that makes them grow really big and Snape says “I see no difference.” WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER JERK. I know what it’s like to have big front teeth and be insecure about them. It’s hard enough to have to put up with the insensitve/mean comments of other kids. But adults?? Really, Snape? Really??
Wow. This comment got really long.
In conclusion: Molly is awesome. Snape is not.
    Excellent post! 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • I LOVE IT TOO. He’s so clueless, and it makes me love him even more. XD I love how Hermione always has to explain everything to him when it comes to Cho and feelings.

AHHH, SO MANY FEELS. Mrs. Weasley is actually the best ever. Yes, Harry is like “well, no one’s here for me, it’s not like the Dursleys came” and then he looks up and sees Bill and Molly and my heart!! Oh, on the boggart scene, I think I cried the first time. I love how Harry is just a part of the Weasley family.

I agree! Just because he worked for Dumbledore doesn’t make him a nice person. I do think he really loved Lily, because of his patronus and all that, but I also think he was so blinded by his love that he turned into a creepy person who climbs over the dead body of James and ignores baby Harry and holds Lily.

He was SO horrible to Neville! And Hermione, and Harry, and everyone else! I almost put the scene about Hermione’s teeth in here, just because it’s the perfect example of how actually cruel he was. He’s a TEACHER, he’s not supposed to be such a bully.

This comment made my day, I LOVE talking about Harry Potter with other people who love it just as much as I do. Thank you, and thank you so much for your comment!😊

  10. okay, I just had to add some thoughts on this. XD
Harry Potter has and will “always” be my long time favorite fantasy series of all time. I can completely agree with you on Molly Weasley. she was there for Harry for every part of his life.
Snape. Idk. I hated him in the beginning. I just hated him. after the Deathly Hallows, I just could never understand why he still had to be so mean. I mean I guess he saved Harry ‘ s life (and also saved mine because I could never live without harry. ahh) but I just didn’t understand why he had to act like the bad guy all those years… so idk.
the Deathly Hallows was kinda confusing?? but it had the most amazing ending, so I couldn’t say anything bad about it. I DID SHED TEARS if you were wondering.
overall this was an amazing post. thank you for sharing your thoughts. I also get you on the bad puns. XD

    • Oh, same here, I can never imagine a time when Harry Potter isn’t my all-time favorite book series. It’s just so magical!⚡️
Honestly, me too. There was never a time where I actually liked Snape?! He had a few high moments, and at the end of the day I really like how we got to see how he truly was working for Dumbledore, but like you said, he was just unnecessarily mean.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way, the first few times I was like…what? But it’s one of my favorite books of the series, and yes, I shed many tears over it, too. Also, THE EPILOGUE. That epilogue is everything.
Thank you so so much, Sydney! And thank you for commenting and sharing all your thoughts, I loved reading them.❤️

  11. This is such a great post Olivia, I loved reading it! It’s funny how our thoughts change as we grow up and how we see books in a different way. I remember feeling a bit confused about the deathly hallows and everything while I was younger and, when I read the books at a later age, saw the movies again and again, somehow it made way more sense to me afterwards haha.
I am also very sad about the lack of diversity in these stories, it’s such a shame, really 😦 thankfully the young adult books market has more and more wildly popular diverse books, something that is much needed! ❤

    • Thank you, Marie!💓It really is so great to continue to read and reread books and have your opinions of them change each time. I and so many others definitely grew up alongside the Harry Potter series! Haha yes, The Deathly Hallows was confusing at first, but thankfully I understand it now. XD
I know, right!? It really would have been such an amazing series to incorporate lots of diversity into. So true though, diversity has come a long way since these books were published and I’m so thankful for the diversity in books we do have today!😊

  12. SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME ABOUT SNAPE. YAAAAASSSSSSSS.

I would like to add an additional gripe – the Hogwarts houses, or rather, how the same people win over and over again! As a Hufflepuff, it makes me SAD OKAY? Like, us Hufflepuffs are awesome. It just felt really biased that it was always a race between Griffindore and Slytherin. As the series goes on, it feels like Rowling half-heartedly starts bringing in pros of the other houses with new characters further down the line as an afterthought. I always can’t help but feel a little bit annoyed about it each time I do a reread. Maybe it’s left over from my childhood sports days where my house lost every year. LOL.

    Liked by 1 person

    • HAHA, YES. XD

This is such a valid complaint that I honestly never thought about before! It really does seem like Gryffindor and Slytherin are the two “main” houses, and Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff just take their respective sides (normally with Gryffindor). I’m a Hufflepuff too, so that annoys me quite a bit, because Hufflepuffs are amazing.💛💜However, like you said, JKR did bring in characters such as Cho and Luna for Ravenclaw and Tonks and other D.A. members for Hufflepuff to give a little more house representation. Still, I’ve never thought about this, and now I’m a little peeved by it. (Peeves reference intended. 😉 )

I have to like come back or something to all your Harry Potter posts after I finally read the series. 14. I love this post Olivia! Don’t worry about hating Snape, while a lot of people still love and defend him, there are plenty of people (maybe even more? I have no idea) who also hate him and acknowledge how terrible he was. If Voldemort hadn’t interpreted the prophecy to be about Harry and hadn’t gone after Lily, Snape would still be a very loyal Death Eater like?? He only switched sides out of guilt :/ And even then he continued to be horrible to everyone. I just can’t get over the fact that he was Neville’s Boggart – the boy’s parents were tortured to the point they’re now in St. Mungo’s! And Snape, a teacher, is his biggest fear! I get people seeing Snape as an interesting character, but defending him??? Claiming he’s a good person?? I don’t get that. Sorry for my mini-rant 😂

Also yes to the diversity! I get that it was a different time and all, but it’s still frustrating that there’s barely ANY diversity. I mean, there’s Cho Chang and the Patil Twins, but they’re minor characters and I think there was some controversy about Cho’s name? It would’ve been great if a place like Hogwarts, that’s filled with so many students, more diverse. It would’ve made the series even better 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • Awe, thank you so much, Michelle!❤️Yes, after writing this post and reading comments, I’ve realized just how many people share my opinion of Snape. Exactly! Even though he was on Dumbledore’s side, he didn’t have the most honorable reasons for being there.

That’s such a good point! I can’t believe Neville’s boggart wasn’t Bellatrix and her husband. But no, it was Snape, the teacher who never failed to remind him how much of a failure he was. It makes me so sad!😭I agree with you completely, Snape is a very complex and well-written character, but that doesn’t make him a good person at all.

Ahh, once again, I completely agree! Oh yes, I did love Cho, Parvarti, and Padma, but like you said, they are minor characters. And they’re only three out of alllll the characters in the whole series. It can’t take away the magic of the series, but I feel like it would have been even MORE magical with more diversity!

Thank you for your comment, I really loved hearing all your Harry Potter thoughts! 🙂

  15. I completely agree with so much of this! I love Molly Weasley and while I was so annoyed with Harry in Order of the Phoenix, because he was just so whiny? I also think this allowed to be “normal” And his flops with girls are so cute and realistic!
I’ve always disliked Severus. Even though I knew he was supposed to be good, I just couldn’t stand him because of how he treated all of his students. The verbal abuse and favoritism is just too much for me to ignore. I also felt like his feelings for Lily bordered on obsessive.
Harry Potter would be so much more beautiful with actual diversity. It’s heartbreaking that for all of JK Rowling’s creativity and work, there isn’t real diversity. It’s so disappointing for diverse readers and kind of queer baiting what she’s done regarding Dumbledore.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Oh yes, Harry in The Order of the Phoenix could be pretty whiny, but like you said, I did like how it showed that he was just a typical teenager. His girl troubles were definitely so realistic!
Exactly, I couldn’t agree with you more. He just wasn’t a likeable character at all and definitely was not a nice person in the least.
Yes, yes, YES! It would have made the stories ten times better, and would have been amazing. Have you seen the trailer for the new Fantastic Beasts movie? I noticed that they had young Dumbledore looking into the Mirror of Erised and seeing Grindelwald (!!), so maybe they are finally going to show some diversity instead of just saying it.
Thank you so much for your comment Elizabeth, I really appreciate it!❤️

  16. I really loved this post and I completely agree with what you said about the trio being young. When you read as a younger reader it’s no big deal but, reading now as an adult it’s like WHATTTT???

I think though, the character that has changed the most in my eyes is Molly Weasley. Yeah, I absolutely hate Snape and I’m not fond of Dumbledore, but honestly, I also have issues with Mrs Weasley. On one hand, she’s one of my favourites because of how she’s basically Harry’s surrogate mother and she’s always there for him. Buttt, she’s kind of harsh towards her own kids though. She kind of treats Ron like a dumbass and she treats the twins as interchangeable and like failures.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you, Ellyn! 🙂 Oh yes, it’s crazy to me how young the trio was, especially after feeling as if they were so old when I was younger.

That’s such an interesting view of Molly! I’ve personally never thought of her as being particularly harsh towards her own children (except for when they illegally fly the car, haha) but I can see where you’re coming from with that. I still love her, though!❤️

  17. Olivia,
OMG BEST POST EVER!!! 😍 #fangirl I have mixed emotions on Snape. Yes, he was abusive and a terrible teacher *especially to Neville* but in the end he was a brave hero who sacrificed himself for a greater cause. But still, a very controversial topic…
As for representation of race/religion/etc. I don’t think you can blame Harry Potter for that. It was set in a time and place where things weren’t very diverse. (England in the 90’s) The only way I could think that JK Rowling would have been able to include more diversity in the Harry Potter books is if she had talked about wizarding schools in other places of the world, like in Japan or Africa. JKR never mentioned the schools in the books or movies, but it’s in Pottermore. There are so many other wonderful books out there who include diversity. I agree with you, I would have liked to see more diversity in the Harry Potter books, but Harry Potter is pretty much perfect so…🤷‍♀️
Loved this post ❤️ keep up the good work!

    • THANK YOU, Katie!❤️Yes, I definitely think Snape was very brave, but I can’t let it excuse his cruelty. (And I know, especially to poor, innocent Neville!)
I see what you’re saying about the setting of Harry Potter! It is true that it probably had something to do with it, but I’m disappointed at the lack of diversity nonetheless. I agree, other than that, Harry Potter is pretty much perfect. 😉
Thank you so much, and thank you for reading and commentings!

  18. I 100% agree about the lack of diversity! I still love Harry Potter, but that aspect is really really frustrating, especially because J.K. Rowling talked about Dumbledore’s sexuality afterwards but never even mentioned it in the books or the movies (and it’s been confirmed that it won’t be included in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie, which features a young Dumbledore. *grits teeth*) I have a lot of the same feelings about Snape! I’m so conflicted because he does so many great things but he’s a really really mean person and does so many awful things as well. Also, it’s funny that you mentioned the thing about horcruxes, because I literally just re-watched Half Blood Prince a few days ago and I FINALLY feel like I fully understand horcruxes. Like it took me eight years of reading/watching HP a gazillion times and I only just figured it out 😂 Okay sorry this is rambly but I really loved this post Olivia!

    • YES, oh my goodness, it’s so frustrating. I saw that Dumbledore’s sexuality wouldn’t be in the new Fantastic Beasts, but then in the preview it showed a young Dumbledore seeing Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised?! Now I’m just confused on if they will include it or not. Snape is such a morally gray character! I think the Harry Potter fandom will forever be conflicted by him, haha. That was ME with the horcruxes! I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out it, but I’m glad I finally did.😂Thank you Annie, and thank you so much for sharing all your thoughts!

  19. The first time I truly noticed the lack of diversity in HP was when Aentee of Read at Midnight pointed it out. But there was this headcanon going around in the art community (and beyond now) of Hermione being black and I’m all for that headcanon 💙
I’m pissed at J.K. Rowling a bit when she revealed that Dumblebore was gay waaay after the books were published and quite coincidentally at a time when diversity in books was more discussed. Like, if he was gay, at least explicitly mention it somewhere in your seven-super-thick-book series.

But yeah, Harry Potter is not my most beloved childhood series (that’s PJatO) but it still holds a dear place in my heart. Especially Peeves and Luna. I love Peeves and Luna very very much 💕

    • That’s such a great headcanon! I love how it came to life in the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play, too, with Noma Dumezweni playing Hermione.
Agreed! I mean, since we never got to see into Dumbledore’s personal life at ALL until the seventh book, I can see why his sexuality wouldn’t be mentioned at first. But I feel like it should have been in The Deathly Hallows, what with the book being written about him and all.

I think Percy Jackson is probably my second favorite childhood series, after Harry Potter! I have so much for it (and Percabeth). And oh my, I love Luna too.💓Thank you for commenting and sharing all your thoughts!

  20. OH GOSH I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS POST SO MUCHHHHHH.
    1) they really were so young!!!!! I read the series (up to GoF, i’m so behind w life) for the first time last year so they are definitely so young to be dealing with evil magic???? By the time Harry’s 20 he’s lived *full* life, which is amazing and a kind of tragic
    2) SNAPE IS SO MEAN. I love him. BUT HE’S SO MEAN. and there’s really no reason to be *that* bad??? Sure, fighting undercover for the greater good is exhausting, but smiling a /little/ bit is /not/ hard
    3) I mourn the lack of diversity w all my heart. All I want is harry and Draco to fall in love and get married ***sigh****
    4) MRS. WEASLEY IS MY FAVORITE. Oh gosh, when she hugs Harry in GoF because he’s emotional and sad, and harry almost cries because it feels so good to have Weasley hug??????
    I love this postttttt ❤ ❤

    • YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW HAPPY THIS MAKES ME. I was so excited to post it!
      1) Oh my goodness, yes, they were! That’s so true, he really had already suffered so much in just a mere twenty years.
      2) HE IS TERRIBLE. Okay, yes, someone definitely needs to tell Snape to smile. Like, all the time, maybe?!
      3) Ughh, I know. Although I don’t ship Drarry because dON’T hurt me, but I really don’t like Draco.🙈I know he was misunderstood but I just really dislike him anyway?
      4) YES. Can I get a Mrs. Weasley hug, please and thank you? XD
Thank you so much Malanie, and thank you for sharing all your Harry Potter, thoughts, I loved reading them all!❤️

  21. Albus REMUS, YES, MY FRIEND, YES! I have very similar feelings about Snape and I wish Harry hadn’t named his son after him. I cannot forgive Snape for the way he treated his students, (ESPECIALLY NEVILLE) no matter how brave he was. Lupin was actually the only Marauder to move on, I think. Both Snape and Sirius (albeit in different ways) were kind of living in the past, still acting like angry schoolchildren, and Lupin actually grew up.
Great post! I too discovered a newfound love for Molly Weasley when I reread the series somewhat recently. She is such a fantastic character. And such an impactful part of Harry’s parent-deprived life!

    • HAHA, YES. Albus Remus Potter has a nice ring to it. 😉 I agree with you, even though Snape was brave, he was also never anything but cruel to Harry, so…? Oh, that’s an amazing point, Lupin really was the only one to actually put the feud between the Marauders and Snape behind him.
Thank you! Molly Weasley is amazing, that’s for sure.

  22. Lots of your observations are true! But as for diversity, I don’t think it was her main point, I mean she literally had no technology (phones, laptops) either, its a whole different world that she created so I’ll let her go. (:

  23. Okay get ready for a long comment…
so I’m actually rereading Harry Potter right now (I’m on the 6th one) and so of course I had to read and see if we think the same…and we totally do!
Honestly I completely forgot all about Harry and Cho until rereading and I cringed so much at their interactions but it was also somehow very enertaining…
Also how did I never realize that Molly Weasley was the only mom figure in Harry’s life??? wow I feel so clueless 😂
and I agree with you about Snape, he was pretty horrible to them.
ahh yes and they were SO YOUNG which I also realized when rereading…it’s also fun to rewatch the movies and see them grow up 🙂
Okay I enjoyed this post so much, it was great :))

    • Awe, I’m so glad we have a lot of the same thoughts! And that you’re reading Harry Potter again, because it definitely deserves to be reread many times. 😉
Haha! I just want to give poor Harry a hug, he definitely has no idea how to be around girls. XD
Don’t feel clueless, I honestly just figured it out myself, haha. I was thinking it through and then I realized…he has SO many dad figures, but not a single mom except for her!
      Yes. Snape is just…*shudders*
Ahh, yes, it’s so fun! They start off so little and then they grow into adults and it’s so cool to be a part of someone’s childhood like that.
Thank you so much Emily, and I loved reading all your thoughts!💓

  24. I literally just started following your blog and I’m already so glad I DID! because OMG ANOTHER POTTERHEAD!!!!
I LOVE Molly and I love her relationship with Mr.Weasley and how much love they had to give to everyone, including Harry ❤ They are literally what I want my family to be like in the future, full of loove haha.
I 100% AGREE WITH SNAPE, I'm also rereading the books and all the hate he gives to his students, it's just not okay that the teacher is literally the biggest bully in the school!!!
AMAZING POST!! I loved everything you wrote! I think a little bit of diversity would have been great, even if J.K. Rowling kind of included it after the books were published, more about that inside the book would have been better!!

    • First of all, hi! Thank you so much for stopping by, I’m so happy you found your way here too. 😉 Second of all, YAY, A POTTERHEAD!
So true! Mrs. Weasley is the epitome of a loving mother, and I adore how she dotes on everyone.
Ugh, exactly. I didn’t mind him as much when I was younger, but I’ve really begun to hate him recently. *nods in agreement*
Thank you so so much! Yes, I’m with you on that for sure. I do like how she included it afterwards, but I do wish it had been there from the start.
