How To Balance Blogging and Your Life // BLOG TOUR for The Beaming Blonde (!!)

A major struggle of mine is balancing blogging and life.

I’m a student, dancer, family member, and friend. That already means I’m incredibly busy, and to add blogging on top of that? How do I find time to read. As I’ve continued blogging over the years, I’ve learned a few things about how to balance blogging and life. 😉

This post is a collaborations with Emily– it’s actually part of her blog tour (which I will be talking about more at the end of this post) so be sure to stick around and learn more about her blog later on.

And now, let’s get into the post!

Plan your posts ahead of time

I honestly don’t know what I would do if there wasn’t a “schedule” option for posts.

It’s so amazing to have the option to say when you want your posts to be published. That means you don’t even have to have internet access, but if you scheduled your post ahead of time, it’ll still go up for everyone to see!

This is perfect for balancing life and blogging because it allows you to prepare your content ahead of time, like on the weekends, even if it’s being posted during the week. This way, if you get swamped with homework, you’ve already planned out and prepared your posts.

Have a set time to blog

Another tip to help you balance blogging and life is to have a certain time to blog every week, or day, or whatever you want.

For example, I usually go through my reader and read blog posts after school, while I’m eating a snack and unwinding before I do homework. I also usually catch up on writing blog posts on Saturday and Sunday, when I have free time. Since I know I’ll be blogging on the weekends, it takes off the stress during the week and I can put my focus on school.

Don’t get distracted by WordPress (or in general)

Honestly, WordPress can be extremely distracting.

Since it’s so easily accessible (the website or the app, too), you can always get notified of new comments, responses to your comments, or posts you need to read.

Sometimes you just have to have some self-discipline and will yourself not to check WordPress. Otherwise you’ll get distracted from your homework, or from getting ready for sports practice, or from sleeping. And sleep is very important. Then you’ll create an unbalance!

Remember quality over quantity

Okay, so I know this is pretty cliché, but that’s because it’s true.

Quality over quantity is so important! I’d rather read one or two posts a week (or even less! whatever works for you!) that are truly worthwhile to read then a post every day that wasn’t great. (Of course, some people do manage to post every day and still come out with quality posts. I envy and admire those people.)

If you try to post every day and ignore quality, then blogging might take over your life. It’s a lot easier to have a balance of blogging and life if you focus on quality over quantity.

Just relax and have fun

Y’all, blogging is supposed to be fun.

Of course it has its stressful moments, and frustrating moments, but at the end of the day, don’t let it take over your life.

If you remember that blogging is supposed to be fun and just take a deep breath and relax, then it won’t seem so hard to balance blogging and life.

Prioritize

Decide what’s most important to you and what you need to focus on!

For me, this is always school, so I make sure to do all of my schoolwork (or at least most of it) before moving on to things like blogging or extracurriculars.

Bring blogging with you

I have the WordPress app (this is not an add haha) and even though it’s sometimes glitchy, I use it to read blog posts or write them when I’m away from my computer. And you can respond to comments, comment on other posts, etc.!

This helps me get so much more done because I’m actually being productive in my free time, instead of scrolling through Pinterest…

Take a break if necessary

If you’ve tried balancing everything and are super stressed and it’s just not working out, definitely strongly consider a hiatus. There’s definitely no shame in it, and it can be a very good thing if you need it- don’t let the balancing act stress you out too much.

I hope these tips could help you a little bit! It’s not easy to balance blogging with everything going on in your life, especially if you’re a full-time student or full-time worker, but it’s definitely possible.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, this was part of a blog tour for Emily’s new blog, The Beaming Blonde. You might know her as Em from Two Girls Two Mountains, and I hope you’re just as excited as I am that she is starting her own blog! I wrote the first part of the post, and she did the second half.

Please be sure to check out her new site, give it some love, and get excited for the rest of her blog tour coming up. (Her official first post will be this Saturday, yay!) Thank you Emily, for letting me be a part of your blog tour!🤗

How do you stay on top of blogging and life? What are your tips? Are you going to check out Emily’s blog? I’d love to chat with you in the comments.

  1. Great tips Olivia. I agree with you totally. I write when I want to.
You are right, the app makes it so easy to be distracted. I often am. So now I check before I sleep or when I wake up. Reading through so many blogs has started to overwhelm me

  2. Heck yes to the last one!!! When blogging suddenly starts to feel like an obligation, stop and rethink about WHY you started blogging in the first place. ♥ I’m still adjusting to my new schedule at uni, so I’m not sure about my blogging schedule yet, but I’m trying my best!

  4. I haven’t schedule many posts ahead of time (mostly because I usually don’t have a post written beforehand), but it’s something I think I want to start doing more. My tip that I saw on another blog that I wish I had followed from the beginning is to have a few posts already written and stored away for a rainy day when you’re either busy or out of ideas. And yes, I am going to check out Emily’s blog. :))

    • Scheduling posts ahead of time is definitely really helpful! But it’s also fun to publish them as you write them. 😉 Ohhh, that’s a great tip! I have a few that I wrote and am going to post once school starts, but I should write some more that can just be posted at random points whenever I need one. Also: yay!

  5. Ahh I love these tips so much ❤ Also, how did I not know you were a dancer?? What type of dance do you do? I used to do ballet. 🙆 Honestly, I love that you have don't get distracted by WordPress as a tip because I ALWAYSSSS get distracted checking the app and thinking about all the blog-hopping and stuff I need to do. It's also nice to have a reminder for quality over quantity because when I see other people who post super often, I feel pressured to do the same.

    Amazing post, Olivia! xx

    • Thank you, Tiffany!💓Ahh, yes, that’s so cool that you are a dancer, too! I do ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, hip hop, and broadway jazz, so…kind of a lot. XD But ballet is one of my personal favorites! Oh my goodness, I get so distracted by WordPress too, I’m hoping to improve on that.

Thank you so so much, thank you for your comment!😊

  6. This is SUCH a great post!! These are all things I try to do but still fail at 😅 This year I’m going to try harder, though, because I know I can balance everything in my life and still be healthy about it… it will just take a lot of time and willpower! 😂 And I really like the idea of having a set time to blog — I usually just do it “whenever”, which is probably not the smartest 😅 Great post!! 💖

    • Thank you so much, May!💓Oh my gosh, that’s so relatable. I think I failed on all these things last year?! But like you said, I’m going to try harder this year, too. We can do it, I believe in us!😂Wishing you all the luck in the world with balancing life and blogging, and thank you for reading & commenting!

  7. Definitely agree! For example, I used to review each book I read, and that created so much stress for me if I wanted to move on to the next book but hadn’t yet reviewed the previous one. Plus, I also had college classes and assignments, so it got complicated. Once I began taking it easier and going my own pace, I gave myself the opportunity to truly enjoy what I was doing 🙂

  8. I think what works for me, at the moment, is blogging when I can. I have a schedule of days to post and I blog whenever whether it’s right before publishing or in advance. I used to always schedule blog posts a month or at least two weeks in advance but this semester it just didn’t work out that way. I think the little leeway I’ve given myself while also having a schedule helps. I’m sure my methods will keep changing based on my real life situations though.

  9. awesome tips, scheduling has certainly been a life saver for me, as I like having blog posts scheduled ahead of time when I’m at college. Otherwise I get stressed…distracted and melt into a puddle of stress aha

  10. This is such a great post Olivia! And it’s super helpful too. I cannot put enough emphasis on prioritizing: sometimes it’s hard to accept that our priorities may change, but that’s life. If for whatever reason, posting on the blog is not the most important thing one should be doing, then they probably should make blogging tasks a backburner even if it’s for a short while.

  11. This is actually how I’ve been managing up to this point (two years now). But lately I’ve been feeling that the blogging calendar (scheduling) is just exhausting me, cause I have to stick to it like a machine. I’ll be trying to eliminate the calendar, and if I schedule the posts, I’ll just schedule them as they come up in my head – without having to. So I guess that’s quality over quantity! I agree that that’s an incredibly important bit.

  12. Interesting tips and the most important is “keep in mind it has to be fun”. Just thinking about it and I feel less guilty when I read rather than blog LOL. Taking time away, not being distracted, devoting some time etc. are all very good tips!
