I’ve always been one of those people who really doesn’t like writing in books.
I mean, my books are precious children to me, and I just never understood why anyone would want to put marks on their beautiful white pages. But…recently, I’ve had a change of heart about this subject, so I thought I’d talk about it today. 😉
Also, if you noticed the title of this post, I’ll also be giving a few small announcements and be talking about the short hiatus I’m taking at the end of this post! Patience, grasshoppers. But first we’re going to talk about books, because books are amazing. XD
Without further ado, let’s get into the post.
As I said, I used to be one of those people that treat their books as humans.
Of course, I’m still against completely hurting books- how could I ever condone that? – but I’ve gotten more relaxed over the years. Nowadays, dog ears are acceptable (I actually dog ear quite a bit when I don’t have a bookmark handy), I think cracked spines are the sign of a well-loved book, and I’ve found that I love writing in them.
Today I’ll be sharing a few of the main reasons I’ve decided I like writing in books, as well as sharing a few examples of when writing in books was especially fun.
It can be so fun to read your own commentary!
I’m currently doing a reread of Percy Jackson books, because why not, and I just started The Lightening Thief. I read this book years ago for school assigned reading (back when school was fun…we even had a mythology fair after we read it where we all dressed up like certain gods or goddesses and I was Artemis) and when I read it, I annotated it.
Back then, annotating wasn’t anything complicated, it was more just “highlight characterization” or “write your thoughts.” So, that’s what I did. And now as I read my copy of The Lightening Thief, it’s so, so fun to read all the thoughts I wrote.
I love how since I’d already read the book, I wrote notes to Percy…XD
The face just cracks me up. Even though I’d already read it before I still reacted to the shocking news with a drawn emoji and exclamation points?!
We all know it’s so true.
I thought it was funny how the armor had sizes?! I don’t know if that’s how real armor is (and I’m sure I’ll never find out) or if it’s just something Rick Riordan put in to be funny.
It can make reading it more entertaining.
Not only can you look back at your commentary later, writing in books can also make reading it for the first time more fun.
For example, I recently (well, in the past few months) read My Dear Hamilton. It was a book written from Eliza Hamilton’s perspective, starting a little bit before she met Alexander Hamilton and going until long after his death.
Throughout the book, there were so many times I would read a line and instantly hear lyrics from the musical Hamilton in my head! Sometimes the lyrics would even be almost word for word in the book. Every time that happened, I wrote the song or a few lyrics from the song next to it. Here are just a few I took pictures of!
This is one of my favorite songs! They’re all my favorites. I love how now, if I reread this, I’ll instantly sing the song in my head.
I thought this book talked about Hamilton’s relationship with John Laurens in SO well, it was really interesting to see, since this is kind of the only line of Hamilton that really talks about it?
This one just fit perfectly, I mean…
Technically this was a letter with James Madison in the book, BUT IT WORKED SO PERFECTLY, OKAY.
All of this made me so happy to see, and just made the whole reading experience that much better!
It gives annotating books a more positive twist!
When I think of annotations, I automatically think a lot of negative things.
First of all, it makes me think of school reading which is another post for another time, but second of all…I just don’t like annotating. Sometimes I like to read without looking for a tone or theme or literary device, okay?!
But if you write little notes for yourself, it can actually be fun to write, and maybe, just maybe, the next time you have to annotate a book you won’t find it quite as horrible.
I hope that was slightly relatable?! I’m not saying that I’m going to start writing in all the books I read (especially since most of them are library books), but I do really enjoy it. I’m surprised to say it, but it just makes reading that much better! 🙂
And now we’ve come to the not-quite-as-fun part of this post, where I talk a little bit about why I’m going on a hiatus and when I’m coming back.
Since school has started back about a month ago, I’ve been so busy with homework, studying, dance, and just life in general. I feel like my latest posts haven’t been quite up to the usual standard I have for myself, seeing as they were written very last minute and were a little rushed. I was reading some of the comments on a post I (and Em!) did about balancing your life with blogging, and realized I…wasn’t following my own advice?!
I kept talking about how it was important to make time for what’s really important, and put aside blogging if it’s too much, but…there I was, hypocritically continuing to blog even though I knew it wasn’t 100% my best effort.
So, although I don’t really want to, because I love posting, I’m going to be taking a hiatus starting now and going until October 1st. I’ll be back in full force then! 😉
While I’m on hiatus, I’ll still be commenting on your posts (though maybe a little less frequently? I hope not though), responding to comments, etc. I’m not talking a hiatus from WordPress, just from the pressure of posting and always being on top of everything blogging-related. When I get back, I’ll be back to my Monday posting schedule. Even though this post isn’t on Monday…I’m sorry, but my schedule will already be messed up for this month anyway.
Since I was supposed to announce my giveaway winner on September 17th, and I’ll be on hiatus, I’ll be announcing it in my recap post on October 1st. So you can still enter up until then if you’re interested!
Whew, that was a lot. XD Thank you so much for reading, and for understanding why I won’t be posting for a little while. Don’t worry, I’ll be back very soon! I just want to make sure I’m putting out content I love.
Do you write in books? Why or why not? Have you ever felt like you needed a hiatus? I’d love to chat with you all in the comments.

Oh I love this post! I never thought of all the positives of annotating in books, but I love your reasons! I think that I’ve always associated annotating with negative feelings because I absolutely *hate* annotating books for school. 😂😩
And I completely understand your reasons for going on a hiatus! It’s definitely important to take a break from blogging every once in a while; your mental health and happiness is really important. ❤️ I hope you enjoy your hiatus! ☺️ I’m actually on a semi-hiatus currently because of school as well (it takes up so much of my free time ☹️), even though I love posting and blogging.

Thank you, Dezzy! Agh, I feel you, I hate annotating books for school too. It’s usually just so time consuming and pointless! *glares at my English teachers who forced me to annotate*
Aw, thank you so much, you’re so kind.❤️I’m hoping to be back with full energy when October rolls around! I hope school gets better for you, and you enjoy your mini hiatus.

I love writing in books if I have a pen nearby (which I almost always do). Dog-earing is something I do when I read a scene that means something to me or I enjoyed a lot. I am very chill about how people treat their books because really, it’s THEIR books which they bought with THEIR hard-earned money, So even if I don’t agree with how they treat their books sometimes (spilling food or coffee or tea on the pages…I absolutely hate that), I don’t really react when they do those things to their books.

That’s such a great point! There’s definitely a wide spectrum, going from people like you who really don’t care if people write in books, going all the way to people who would never dream of it. 😉 I love dog earing when something was important, too! That way, if it’s my book, I can go back and reread that part whenever I want to. Thank you for commenting, Tanaz!

Ok, so. I find dog earring (is that how you spell it?) unacceptable (sorry!) but yes – cracking the spine IS a sign of a well loved book. Though when it happens for the first time, I do freak out a little.
But writing in books? NO. NOT NOW, NOT EVER. If I had two copies of the book, sure – I’d love to do that. But who has the money for that?! Not me, that’s for sure. (I’d rather buy new books)
There is a book (Words in Deep Blue, by Cath Crowley). And in it is a ‘letter library’, where people can leave notes and whatever in books. If I ever fulfill my lifelong ambition to own a bookstore/library, I am SO having one of those. (Also, it will have rolling ladders. For the general public. Feel free to come and visit ANYTIME! 😉)
In conclusion, I do see the appeal of writing in books. But you haven’t convinced me. Yet…

P.S. sorry for the long comment!

HAHA! This comment made me laugh so much.😂I love your passion for book treatment! Cracking the spine is such a great sign of a well-loved book, I agree.
“Who has the money for that?” –> Very relatable, as far as I know, not many people do. XD I’d rather just buy new books if I had the money too!
THAT SOUNDS AMAZING. Sign me up, I’ll come all the time.
Haha, never apologize for long comments, I love them! This was so fun to read.❤️

Best of luck for classes Olivia, I’m sending you lots of love and courage!! xx

Amazing post as always Olivia!! Although I don’t think I can ever crack the spines of my books I think maybe trying to annotate a book once would not be that bad; sounds kind of fun especially when rereading the book years later!
I understand what you said about being overwhelmed by school! I’m feeling the same too; there’s just so much school work and this is a really important year of high school for me. I really hope you can relax and de stress a bit from this hiatus! I can’t wait to read your posts in October! ❤️

oh my gosh I feel happppyyyy because I ALSO WRITE IN MY BOOKS SOMETIMES. AND I SECRETLY THINK IT’S FINE. c: In middle school my teachers would always low-key give me bookmarks, because I always dog-eared my books and they thought it was horrible XD
but I always bought used books!!! so, it’s like they’re already worn in so I can write in them and not feel bad. With new books I’m more careful bc they are so pure and lovely and smell new, but other books are cute when they have notes and lskjdflksdfs

That’s so true! Some of my used books even have writing in them and I think that’s so cool, that I can tell it’s already been so loved.

Hahahaha, I love love the notes you wrote in Percy Jackson! And thank you for including pictures because I don’t remember quite a few of those lines, especially the one about the “ordinary” ballpoint pen and the other one on the size five shield. Rick Riordan is hilarious. Yes, I am a person who writes in books. Hm, I actually think I’ve never had major qualms about doing so either. I don’t do it with most books I read, usually non-fiction or classics. Also, I’ve sometimes realized that if I take annotating too seriously when I’m reading just for fun, it slows me way down and I stop. Also, duh, of course I understand why you’re taking a hiatus. School life is already a good amount of time by itself. Study your heart out and then come back promptly on October first, okay? And by the way, I’m still expecting yourcomments- there’s no way I’m going three weeks without hearing from you. :))

Why, thank you! 😉 Rick Riordan IS hilarious, and I love his books (though especially the Percy Jackson ones) dearly. They never fail to make me laugh. I don’t write in books THAT much either, but when I do, I would say I enjoy it (and I write in nonfiction more too! usually because it’s a book I’m reading to get something specific out of, if that makes sense). I know, right? School is just…overwhelming a lot of the time. I would like to petition for four day school weeks. XD Thank you! Don’t worry, OF COURSE I will still be commenting on all your posts! (Speaking of that, I saw your newest post in my reader and I can’t wait to read it when I get the chance. Now I have something to look forward to!)

You’re welcome! Yep, his Percy Jackson books are my favorite too. I’ve read all the Kane Chronicles too and liked those, but I’ve only read the first books of his newer ones- Apollo, Magnus Chase. Yes, that completely makes sense! I usually only write in books that I’m trying to get something specific out of. And, if I notice that the process is slowing me down and keeping me from wanting to read the book, the I stop. Haha, four day school weeks sound beautiful- but I have a hunch that they would stuff more into those four days and it would still be overwhelming. Ahhhh, thank you so much! Oh! I also forgot to mention that in fifth grade, we dressed up as mythological characters too. I was Hesta.

Same! That’s actually a little creepy- I’ve read all the Kane Chronicles, and only the first books of Magnus Chase and Apollo too. I really want to continue them, though, especially The Trials of Apollo. I liked that one better (maybe because I just love Greek mythology after Percy Jackson and because PERCY WAS IN IT). Exactly! Same here. Okay, that’s so true, though- and then we’d be wanting three day weeks and so on and so forth. XD Ahh, that’s so cool!

There is nothing at all wrong with taking a break – instead, it’s knowing how you feel and adjusting to cope with it.
