5 Book Characters I Would Be Best Friends With In a Heartbeat (& That I Love Dearly)

Characters are my absolute favorite.

The characters are what makes or breaks a book for me. I can still love a book that has a confusing plot or isn’t quite as well-written as I would like, but the characters are negotiable- if I can’t connect to them, then I don’t love the book.

Luckily for me, there are so many wonderful characters out there! Thank you, authors, for being so kind and writing the best characters into existence. One mark of a true amazing character, at least for me, is that I would gladly become their best friend (if they were real and we crossed paths 😉 ).

In this post, I’m going to be screaming about a few characters that I would become the best of friends with in a heartbeat, and talking about what makes them so amazing. Without further, let’s get into it!

1. Hermione Granger (from Harry Potter)

I wanted to start off with a character that most people would know and be familiar with, and I think Hermione is a perfect example of that. I think that, if the two of us were to be in the same school together hopefully Hogwarts and not my muggle school, we would be kindred spirits.

Hermione and I are very alike in that we enjoy learning, we’re perfectionists, we love to read, and we would do anything for our friends. Yes, she can sometimes be a little bossy, but that’s just the overachiever in her, and I can relate to that. 😉 I think we’d get along really well, and help each other learn new things!

See? We’re meant to be friends.

2. Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam, & Noah (from Raven Cycle)

I really, really would give nearly anything to be part of this friend group.

Half of the time I’m not even sure what’s happening in the Raven Cycle (I’m so bad at understanding fantasy plots, y’all) but I still love these books with every molecule of my being, BECAUSE THE FRIENDSHIPS.

You have the perfect group of Gansey (the love of my life), Adam (the most precious human ever), Ronan (my dearest Ronan), Noah (the cinnamon-iest cinnamon roll), and Blue (who doesn’t deserve to be last on this list and is completely amazing). I would fit right in, right?! They definitely need an introverted, dancing bookworm to fill out their friend group, right?!

I can see myself being such great friends with these characters because they really throw themselves wholeheartedly into their friendships. They give their relationships their all, and can be described as none other than a family, and I love that.

3. Jo March (from Little Women)

They may be quite a large generational gap between us, but when it comes to a possible friendship between Jo and I, I don’t think that would matter. 😉

Out of the four March sisters, I think I’m most like Beth, but I still think Jo and I would be the best of friends. We’d share our love of books and writing, which would prompt so much conversation between us.

However, other than that, we don’t have too much common, though that wouldn’t stop us being friends. Jo would be able to teach me a lot about courage and doing things outside of my comfort zone, and maybe I would be able to help her control her temper. I think we’d make a nice balance!

4. August (from A Thousand Perfect Notes)

A Thousand Perfect Notes came out about four months ago, and I have already read it twice. I loved every aspect of it, but my most favorite part was hands down the characters. And my favorite character was undeniably August.

August is full of sunshine, happiness, and good vibes. She reminds me of a sunflower or ice cream on a summer’s day, and her character is truly the embodiment of joy. It would be so amazing to be friends with her!

If August and I lived near each other, I think we would definitely become friends, and I think she would just be such an amazing person to be around because of her positivity and her tendency to build everyone up instead of tearing them down. 🙂

5. Liesel Meminger (from The Book Thief)

I love The Book Thief, and Liesel Meminger, with all my heart.

Image result for liesel meminger gif

Yes, it broke my heart (shattered it, in fact, into millions of pieces), but I can’t help but absolutely adore it anyway. I can see myself being such amazing friends with Liesel for so many reasons.

First of all, we both love books (I sense a trend), but second of all, she just is such a genuinely good person. She does a few things throughout the books that I never would have done (one of them pictured above, if that’s the scene I think it is) but that doesn’t mean her heart isn’t in the right place or that she isn’t innately good.

I can just see us sitting together, reading in a beautiful library, and that makes me happy.

And that concludes my list! Of course, there are countless other book characters I love dearly- read any one of my review posts, and I’m sure you’ll see me screaming about some character or another. 😉

In this post, I wanted to talk about characters from some books that I thought a lot of people reading this post have likely read, so that way it wouldn’t just be everyone reading a lot of character names they don’t know. XD I might do a post like this again, though, with more characters that aren’t necessarily from popular books!

Also, I very much apologize for the sporadic posting lately. It’s making me so sad to neglect my blog, but school and dance take top priority for me, and I wasn’t able to get out a blog post last week. I didn’t have time to write a post that is up to the standards I set for myself, so I decided not to write one at all.

In addition, I haven’t been giving all of your posts the proper love and affection that they deserve! I can’t remember the last time I was caught up in my Reader (I’m at least three weeks behind at this point), and while I am able to read a few posts every now and then, it isn’t consistent at all. So, my apologies for not being able to read all of your posts- I miss them dearly, and I hope I can catch up soon.

Fall is such a busy time of year, and I hope you are having an easier time managing all the stress than I am! Don’t forget to take a breath every once in a while and remind yourself that you are amazing.💓

What book characters would you be best friends with? Do you agree with any of mine? And how are you doing? I’d love to chat with you all in the comments.

  1. Let’s see…………. I would really like to be friends with Percy Jackson, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson. I would probably relate to Annabeth the most though; we are both aggressive, strong headed, love reading(!!) and are the sensible ones. If you haven’t read PJ, GIVE IT A TRY! 😀 Pretty sure you’ll love it.

  2. Don’t worry about not posting all the time, Olivia, some things have to come first ❤ ❤ I hope everything has been well with school and dance 🙂
I love this post! I'd be friends with Hermione for sure, I'd love to and we are so similar ahah. I would also love to be a part of the Raven Cycle's little group of friends, they're so amazing together and I am certain we'd have fabulous adventures, too 😀

  3. I love Hermione and I will always wish to be her friend! Jo has always scared me? I don’t know why 😭 I really, really wish I could be friends with Elizabeth Bennet. Just imagine the fun conversations we could have!

    • Ahh, I know, right? If only she were real. 😉 I feel as if Jo could be intimidating at times, so I see why you’re a little scared of her, haha. Oh my gosh, Elizabeth Bennett would be so fun- AND ANNE SHIRLEY, TOO.

  4. This is such a cute post! I love the bookish theme too. Sometimes the best friendships are born out of the starkest contrasts of character, so I can think of hundreds of characters I would love to live life alongside! I especially love it when the authors make the villains so loveable. Particularly in movies I’ve seen, but I love overanalysing characters for underlying insecurities and stuff! (Sorry for the long comment lol)

  5. haha I looked at the title of this post and literally the first person to come to mind was Hermione 🙂
A Thousand Perfect notes sounds good, I’ll have to check it out!
ooh yes Liesel!! I love The Book Thief so much…

  6. Great choices!

I love Little Women. I went on a unexpected year long blogging break and it was reading Little Women that brought me back to the blogosphere because I just needed someone to talk to about it! Like you, I’m more of a Beth aspiring to be a Jo – I do have aspects of both, but I’ve always been the one to calm the waters more than test them.

I just finished A Thousand Perfect Notes and loved it! August is ALL THE GOOD FOODS WRAPPED UP IN ONE. I can’t wait for The Boy Who Steals Houses.

    • Thank you, Becky!

Awh, that makes me really happy to hear how Little Women led you back to blogging! It really is such an amazing and thought-provoking classic. Ah yes, I’m a Beth but sometimes I wish I were more of a Jo, though I do both Beth dearly. *tear*

IT IS SO GOOD. I have endless love for Beck, August, and Joey. Same! 🙂

  7. I seriously need to read The Raven Cycle already! I read the first book when it came out and enjoyed it, but then I studied abroad and kind of forgot to keep up with the series and just haven’t cycled back yet even though it’s so beloved. And I have A Thousand Perfect Notes on my shelf and need to get to that one soon, too!

    • The Raven Cycle is SO good! I think it’s an easy series to forget about when you’re in between books, but when you’re reading them, it’s like no other series exists. XD I will be recommending A Thousand Perfect Notes for eternity, I hope you love it as much as I did!

  8. OH MYyyyyyyyy*bursts into tears*
I CANNOT HANDLE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS POST.
this post is my new favorite
    in the whole world
it’s perfect and I will protect it with my life.
Gansey is the love of my life toooooo, I just want to celebrate how wonderful he is???? But Noah would be my best best friend bc he’s literally the cutest human being to ever grace us with his presence.
HE DESERVES TO BE CHERISHed AND PUT FIRST ON THE RAVEN BOYS’ LIST OF PRIORITIES. (my #1 regret is that they neglect him so muchhhhh?????)
my best friend of all time, though, is Neil Josten from The Foxhole Court. u already know about my obsession c: c: c: c: c:

    • MALANIE, I CANNOT HANDLE HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU AND YOUR COMMENTS. *cries*
Gansey is just…I mean, you already know how I feel, but I could continue talking about it for eternity and I probably will. (I can picture me at eighty telling my grandchildren, “now, there was this one character, Gansey…”) He’s just too imperfectly perfect. And Noah is also the best, because he’s Noah and he loves glitter and that song that I can’t remember the name of but it’s the Irish one that Ronan always plays and he is the purest soul.
YES, THEY DO NEGLECT HIM TOO MUCH. Like they always just notice Noah isn’t around? And it makes me sad.
I have not read the Foxhole Court, and I think that is a crime. I SHALL READ IT SOON. 😉

  9. I think you should definitely do another post like this sometime! You know I’ve never really thought about who I’d be friends with like that. . . . Hmmm, but off the top of my head, I definitely think Bastille and the whole Smedry family from Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson, Connor from the Land of Stories, Saphira from Eragon, and well, I’d probably need to do some staring at my bookshelf before I can think of any more, lol.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I definitely might have to! 😉 Ooh, I haven’t heard of some of the books you mentioned, but I would also love to be friends with Connor from The Land of Stories. I feel like I’d be better friends with Alex though? But Connor, too. XD Thank you for your comment!

  10. I agree with Hermione, and I DEFINITELY agree with the raven boys and blue—especially Gansey and Blue. The characters in that series were so real to me, it was amazing. I’m sorry to hear you’re stressed out! 😦 It’s good you have priorities, though. Focus on what you need to focus on, and don’t stress yourself out too much about the rest.

  11. Hey hey hey!
Okay, I’ve only read the first book of the Raven Cycle, and I was confused by the plot too. (I’m sorry to say that I did not like it- it’s because of the magical realism part of it.)
Little Women! My school put on a play of it last year, and it was SO GOOD. I cried so many times during it, not because it was sad, but because of the emotions. So that’s the experience I’m basing my answer off of because agh, I’m sorry to say that I didn’t like the book either (agh, I’m genuinely wish I could say otherwise, Olivia!). I think Jo and Laurie’s relationship is amazing- until it’s not. But while it was good, that’s a friendship I would want to be part of.
I agree with characters other people have commented- Percy Jackson like Sterling said, and Elizabeth Bennet like Elizabeth said!
The thing is, I actually don’t think I think about wanting to be friends with my favorite characters very much. I haven’t thought about this, but I’m pretty sure I either think about how great they are, or how I would like to be them, not really anything in between.
I am doing well, thank you for asking. I am planning on going on a walk and watching Spiderman this afternoon, both of which I am very excited for. How are you doing?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hello there! *waves from afar*
Ahh, I see how you would be confused. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on either. But the characters are just too perfect for me to resist. XD Oh, that makes sense that you wouldn’t enjoy it if you don’t like magical realism!
I’ve never seen a play of Little Women, but I hope I can sometime, I bet it would be wonderful. Just out of curiosity, what did you not like about the book? I know you like classics, but was this one just too long/with not enough action? I KNOW, Jo and Laurie’s friendship is great until…my ship is ruined. But it’s okay, I’m fine. *deep breath*
Yes! Those are all so great.
That’s really interesting- I see what you mean about just simply rating your characters, instead of actually thinking about having friendships with them.
I’m glad to hear that! Ooh, that sounds really nice. 🙂 I hope you enjoy your afternoon! I’m doing okay, thank you for asking too- I’m going to spend the rest of today doing homework and hopefully some blogging and maybe some reading or watching of Friends. XD

  12. ahhhh YES. Is it possible to hug a post because that’s what I want to do with this right now?? *attemps to hug laptop* Hermoine is my smol beautiful, sweet, sassy child imma go and wrap her up in a blanket. Of all the sisters from Little Women, Jo and Beth are two of my favourites. Have you read Three Dark Crowns before or the series by Kendare Blake? There’s this gal called Jules, and her personality is just *lit* (me attempting to use language people nowadays use but failing miserably), but I’m not going to talk too much about my other child just in case you haven’t read it yet 😉 Um, just realized that this post is about character bffs but I am now referring them as my children?? I guess in my standard every character that I love automatically becomes my child XD And I haven’t read ATPN yet, and I am so disappointed. My local public library doesn’t have that yet, so I want to boycott it for not getting ATPN, but if I do that, then I will have no books to read? #BookishProblems

oh, and about that. Olivia, you have NOTHING at all to apologize about! Life is busy, and sometimes there are things that need to come first, and that is totally okay. Take care of yourself! ❤ Ugh, tell me about stress XD Hopefully things are a bit better for you now ❤ Take breaks and don't forget to have some me-time. And yes – I'm a potato and shall use your words against you – don't forget to take a breath, and that you are amazing ❤ you can do it! I'm cheering for you, always 🙂

    • I WISH I COULD HUG YOU THROUGH THE COMPUTER SCREEN. *hugs laptop too* I’m so happy you enjoyed this post! I agree so much, sometimes Hermione’s sassiness is underrated, but it’s SO there, and I’m always living for it.XD I haven’t read either of those series, but Jules sounds super intriguing, so I might just have to add them to my TBR. Haha, for me, children and best friends in books are nearly interchangeable. 😉 Ahh, hope you get to read APTN soon! They don’t have it where I live either (I think it’s only available in the UK and Australia maybe?) so I ordered it through Amazon and it was so very worth it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.❤️Ahh, you are just the most wonderful human and Kimberly there ever was, thank you for always being so supportive and JUST THE BEST, OKAY. I hope your week has been going well!

      • I SHALL HUG BACK *squishes laptop accidentally* Hermoine’s sassiness never fails to brighten up my day. “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things – friendship and bravery and – oh Harry – be careful!” 😂 I’ll just might have to get ATPN on Amazon then – oh, did you know that when Amazon first started out as a company it only sold books? *sprinkles you with bookish facts* haha no worries girl!! this smol unitato (unicorn+potato) says you can do it!

ps. tip to help when things are stressful: listen to I Want it That Way 😉

        • Yes, HERMIONE. Oh my goodness, she has so many iconic lines. *bows down to Hermione, Queen of Sass* Yes yes yes, you should. 😉 Oh, I love that fun fact! I had an inkling, and semi-knew it in the back of my mind (if that makes sense), but I’m happy that interesting tidbit of Amazon history has now moved to the front of my mind again. XD

KIMBERLY, I’M SCREAMING. YESSSSS! you are my fireeeeee the one desireeeeee

    • Okay, so the trend is that all the characters are bookworms! Seriously, I’d love to be friends with Hermione since we both love reading and studying. I feel like I’m more like Luna though: creative, smart, brave, curious, eccentric and a bit of a loner yet very friendly if you took the time to talk to me.
I’d love to be part of The Avengers or the X-Men. I’d also like to be friends with Cress and Iko from The Lunar Chronicles and I’d love to be friends with Caprica Six from Battlestar Galactica since she is such a complex little cinnamon roll. I think I tend to be more outgoing and talkative then her and she’s much shyer but we’re both intuitive, brave, clever and we’re both Christians. SHE’S AN AMAZING TV CHARACTER AND I LOVE HER WITH ALL MY HEART AND I JUST NEED MORE PEOPLE TO WATCH BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

      Liked by 1 person

      • That’s so true! (I don’t think I even realized that, lol.) Oh, I love Luna so much! I wish I could be more like her in the way that she doesn’t let what people think affect her. I also wish I could have more of Ginny Weasley’s spunk.
HAH, I CAN TELL YOU LOVE BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. I’m sorry to say the only reason I know about it is from Dwight on The Office liking it. (I don’t know if you’ve seen The Office, but there’s a famous quote that sums up all of Dwight’s interests and it’s, “Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.”)

        Liked by 1 person

        • I love Luna, too.
YES, YOU ARE CORRECT. You’d probably like the show since it has some good drama and romance. It’s very sci-fi/action-y. I’ve seen a few episodes of the Office before and I love how funny it is.
