5 Reasons You Should Read Harry Potter // Aka…Me Trying to Convince You All to Be Potterheads?!

I believe in a lot of things.

I believe in the innate goodness of people, love, gravity, God, the fact that my heart can be torn apart by a book… But one other (very important) thing I believe in is that everyone should give Harry Potter a chance.⚡️

In case you didn’t know about my immense (and sometimes slightly terrifying) love for Harry Potter…well, I have an immense and sometimes slightly terrifying love for Harry Potter. And I like to talk about it on my blog, a lot.

Blog Title - Design #1 (16)

In today’s post I’m going to list a few reasons that will hopefully convince you to read Harry Potter if you haven’t yet, or to reread it if you have already read it! I’m very excited for this, because screaming about Harry Potter is one of my specialties.

As a slight disclaimer, if you haven’t read Harry Potter because your parents don’t allow you to, it goes against your beliefs, you have read it and didn’t like it, etc. – this post is not meant to criticize you for your choices, or say that you need to read Harry Potter. This is just the lighthearted ramblings of a your resident Hufflepuff! That’s me.

All right, without further babbling, let’s get started. 😉

Hogwarts teaches you so much more than magic.

I truly think Harry Potter helped shape me as a person.

That sounds overdramatic, but it’s true. I first read Harry Potter when I was eight years old, and have reread it consistently since then. There has never been another book that’s been with me as long as this series, and the lessons that lie within it are invaluable.

Friendship, courage, loyalty, wisdom. Good vs. evil. The idea that you don’t have to be evil just because you’re surrounded by it. You don’t have to be the best at whatever it is you do in order to succeed. The lesson that love (platonic, familial, romantic) makes all the difference in the world.

J.K. Rowling packed so many life lessons into her seven books, and for that, I’m grateful.

You’ll understand references!!

One thing I’ve noticed as an avid Potterhead is that there are a lot of Harry Potter references out there. Every time that happens, I scream and flail and point out the reference to the people I’m with. Usually their reaction is along the lines of:

But you know, it’s okay. It’s okay I’m okay.

However, if you read Harry Potter, you’ll be privy to all these references!! You’ll have knowledge beyond just “Gryffindor and Slytherin” (there are two other houses too you know) and suddenly all the references will make sense.

There are 7 whole books and 8 movies to entertain you.

If you decide to read Harry Potter, it’s not just a single book that will be over too quickly for you to even fall in love with it.

No, no, no- there are 7 full, long, detailed, interesting books. Not to mention pretty amazing movie adaptations, of which there are 8.

Reading Harry Potter only has to be as much of an investment as you want it to be. If you want to take your time and slowly devour each novel, you can. If you’d rather eat them all at once (like me, oops, I’m like Fluffy) then you can go right ahead, too.

The main point is you have so many wonderful books and movies ahead of you! Go at your own pace and enjoy being entertained.

It has an amazing cast of characters.

Part of the reason that I think I was so drawn into the magical world is because I adored so many of the characters in it.

We have Harry, who (as I’ve extensively discussed) is incredibly kind, humble, relatable, brave, and just the most wonderful smol cinnamon roll?? I don’t love him at all. We also have Ron, who’s hilarious, also really brave and a great best friend, and Hermione, who is intelligent, quick thinking, and also the best friend. They’re all good friends, okay. I want to be in the Golden Trio.

You also have your morally grey characters, like Snape and Draco and (debatably?) Dumbledore. You have parent figures (Sirius, Mrs. Weasley, Hagrid, Lupin), odd but endearing characters (Luna, Dobby), not to mention everyone at Hogwarts.

For any Harry Potter fan, it’s likely that they have a hard time picking a favorite character…that’s because they’re all wonderful and such a pleasure to get to know.

There are so many opportunities to be a part of the fandom.

I consider myself part of the Harry Potter fandom, though I don’t know if I count? I’m not on tumblr or anything, but I do scream about it a lot on my blog and in real life. (We’re just going to say that makes me part of the fandom. I don’t have to be official, right?)

As a lover of this series, since the fanbase is so broad, I get to have so much fun with it. I have a couple of Harry Potter shirts, pajama pants, socks, and other things like mugs. I also love looking about Harry Potter pins on Pinterest (mostly headcanons, but other things too) and now I have an obsession with snowy owls.

Harry Potter is kind of a phenomenon…and that makes it so much fun to be a fan! There aren’t too many book series for which you can easily buy shirts for and find so much content about on the Internet.

It’s so amazing to be a part of the fandom, and that’s one great thing about reading Harry Potter.

Once you read it, it will be with you for the rest of your life.

From my own experiences and the experiences of other Potterheads I’ve encountered, Harry Potter isn’t really the kind of book you read and forget about.

There’s a reason why J.K. Rowling created Pottermore, why there’s a Broadway play (although I try not to think about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), why colleges have Quidditch teams, why there’s an entire theme park that is a replica of the Harry Potter world.

Once you’ve read Harry Potter, it stays with you. You’ll remember the life lessons it taught you, you’ll look back fondly on your days at Hogwarts (because we all got to go to Hogwarts with Harry), and you’ll maybe even want to revisit it.

Reading Harry Potter is an amazing experience and it doesn’t just go away.

I love Harry Potter. Hah, you couldn’t tell at all. I know that there are a lot of people who don’t like it, but I wrote this post for the small percent that maybe just needed that extra convincing push in order to read this series.

…And I also wrote this because, well, I adore talking about my absolute favorite books and it makes me really happy. I hope you enjoyed, and thank you so much for listening to me ramble on about Harry Potter.

Have a magical week!⚡️

Did I convince you to read Harry Potter if you haven’t already? If you have read it, what made you read it initially? Would you reread it? I’d love to chat with you all in the comments.

  1. I’m so interested in getting people’s reactions to HP that never read it as a child! I hope this post convinces some others to give the books a try. It’s so weird to think that there are people my age who just completely missed the hype of these books growing up. Maybe the hype was a turn off, but still! ^_^

    • I realise this was ages ago but its lockdown due to corona right now and i did a Harry Potter marathon (1 a week over 8 weeks) and nows it done i can’t get over it! I feel majorly obsessed and wonder what i thought about before i watched them. I’m also reading them now to ‘keep the magic alive’ because i just can’t let go. Does anyone relate? Feel like im being stupid for being obsessed over movies and things that aren’t real.

      • Oh my gosh, this comment made me want to do a Harry Potter marathon so bad! I think I’m going to do one with the books and movies this coming month, because why not. I definitely think being obsessed with Harry Potter is far from stupid- it’s so magical and has intrigued people for years now and only continues to be amazing.💛Happy reading!

Ahhhh Olivia, I love this post! ❤ ❤ It's funny and kind of amazing, too, to see how Harry Potter, how a series of books, has shaped and has had an impact on so, so many lives, I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. And the endless Harry Potter references haha, I love seeing one anywhere, always makes me happy and warm my heart. I'm feeling so nostalgic rewatching the movies every time . ❤

  4. okay I’ve been wanting to read HP for years but I think your blog post convinced me to actually read it today. xD My parents don’t want me to read them right now, but SOON.

  5. Well I have already read the Harry Potter series (a few times now) but this post has convinced me to pick it up again soon! 😀 I want to try and actually re-read it because I’ve been saying that for ages and I can’t remember the last time I picked the first book up.
I feel like the characters are a major part of why I love the books; Hermione was someone I wanted to be when I was younger, and I loved the friendship between her, Ron and Harry.
Plus obviously I would love to visit Hogwarts (if it was real and/or if that was possible). 😀
    Great post. ❤

    • Yay! That was one of my goals- to get people to also want to reread it. 😉 Even though it’s not the first time, rereading can still have so much (if not all) of the original magic. I honestly love the Golden Trio so much too, and of course I would never turn down a trip to Hogwarts.
Thank you, thank you for the kind comment! ❤

  6. That gif of Harry at the end just gave me goosebumps is that weird lol? Like what you were saying and his sweet little excited face was just the perfect ending. Because it really is magical how broad and beautiful the world is and how so many people have found a home in it. ❤ I also don't really consider myself part of the fandom, but I think we both should say we are. 🙂 I love looking at Harry Potter fan art on Pinterest. I have a board dedicated to books, but let's be real, it's a Harry Potter shrine. Loved this post! Your enthusiasm is so contagious!

    • Haha, no! I get emotional over Harry Potter all the time. (I’m glad I’m not the only one. 😉 ) Yes, we should consider ourselves part of the fandom! Lol, I finally had to make myself a full Harry Potter pinterest board because it was overtaking my ‘fandom’ board completely. Thank you Madeline, and thank you for your comment!⚡️

  7. Okay, I would LOVE to read Harry Potter. The whole thing appeals to me as a fantasy lover (LOTR is the best, sorry!), especially the concept of Hogwarts. I’m a Hufflepuff too, by the way. 😉

It’s just that my parents and I don’t agree with Rowling’s world-view in many ways. Perhaps someday I’ll read it??

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hey, fellow Hufflepuff!💛I actually haven’t read LOTR yet. I didn’t like The Hobbit (I’m sorry in advance) so I never went on to read it, though I think I really should.

Oh, gotcha. If you ever do read it, I really hope you enjoy it!

Oh, a spring reread is so exciting. I just did a reread in January/February and I’m already looking forward to the summer so I can do another one?? I just love it too much. XD Thank you again, and thank you for always Harry Potter fangirling with me. 😉

  10. Aaah girl you’re sucking me in. This post was so fun to read – I LOVE your style of writing like girl what even?! ❤ Hmm I might consider it but I'm the type to completely avoid something that's been hyped about. And I'm not the biggest fan of fantasy but if there's romance, I'm in. Love this post!

    • I am?! Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me.💘I totally understand not wanting to be disappointed after all the hype, but in my opinion, Harry Potter is definitely worth it. XD (And there is romance, though not in the first few books since the main characters start off at age eleven!)

  11. So funny that I stumbled upon this post as I’m almost done with a Harry Potter series reread!! I started with Sorcerer’s Stone in September and am about to start Deathly Hallows. I’m currently reading The Lightning Thief because I need something light to read in between Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows but I’m excited to finish the series soon. It’s been so long since I visited Hogwarts and have totally enjoyed it!!

  12. I really enjoyed this post! I’ve read Harry Potter a number of times. So many I’ve actually lost count!

And I think it really does make you part of a community. You can always start a conversation with someone who’s read Harry Potter. Plus, it’s how I met my best friend in elementary school! She was the one who convinced me to read Harry Potter, and ultimately got me into reading!

    • Thank you, Malka!💕Ahh, same here.

Oh my goodness, that’s so true! Aww, I love that you met your best friend that way. I’ve definitely been able to use it as a conversation starter with people that I didn’t know well (but knew they liked Harry Potter) and gotten to know them better. It’s like all us Potterheads are connected!

  13. I was a “late bloomer” when it came to the books. But, once I started, I couldn’t stop. I’ve seen almost all the movies when they were released in theaters, and we have all of them on DVD. I have all of the books. I have certain types of merch – A Quidditch shirt from Universal Studios when Al and I were on our honeymoon in 2015, magnetic bookmarks, an awesome fleece blanket from my in-laws that depicts Hogwarts, and at least two coffee mugs from my mom that she bought when she visited London a few years ago.

The coolest thing for me was I was in London in July 2005, when The Half-Blood Prince was released. It was such an awesome experience!! We went to the book release at midnight at Waterstones, their version of Barnes & Noble. So, I have two copies of The Half-Blood Prince, the American paperback and the British hardback.

    • That’s amazing! All your merch sounds so great and that’s also the best thing ever that you went to Universal for your honeymoon?? I would love to go to Harry Potter World at some point in my life (hopefully soon, haha).

Wow, that sounds SO wonderful!😍Sadly, I didn’t read the books as they were published (I was too young to read HP yet) so I didn’t get to do anything like that, but what an awesome Harry Potter memory.
