The Pancake Book Tag // ft. Thoughts on Book Slumps, Simon Spier, & More

It is a truth universally acknowledged that pancakes are amazing.

Even if they aren’t your favorite breakfast food (I have to admit, waffles offer some true competition), there’s something amazing about a tall, warm stack of pancakes. Especially if they have chocolate chips…or blueberries…or whipped cream… 😉

Prepare to be craving pancakes for the rest of this post, because today I’m going to be participating in Becky’s Pancake Book Tag! Being the amazing human that she is, she combined pancakes and books all into one post, and I couldn’t love it more.

Blog Title - Design #1 (20)

This tag is incredibly creative- I love all the prompts, the beautiful graphics, and of course I can’t wait to talk about some wonderful books all the while wishing I was eating pancakes right now.

Without further ado, let’s get into the post!

The Rules

  • Link back to the original creator of the post (go read it here!)
  • Feel free to use any of the pancake graphics in your post, or you can create your own. (I’m using Becky’s because they’re beautiful!)
  • Tag 5 other people at the end of your post and let them know you’ve tagged them.

I don’t often read books in prose, so for this one, I’ll be going with a book with beautiful descriptions and overall writing style.

My answer is most definitely Summer of Salt.

This book was so, so gorgeous! I need to reread it soon. The descriptions of the magic, the stormy, mysterious island- even months after reading this book, I still have a vivid mental picture in my head, and that says a lot.

I just finished Six of Crows, so I can’t think of any character that fits this more than Kaz Brekker?? He’s ingenious, an actual mastermind, and he definitely has a sharp temperament, too.

“What doesn’t kill me better run.”

-Kaz Brekker, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

You’d never want to cross Kaz, but it’s likely he’s already crossed you.

This has to be Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens AgendaI recently reread it and remembered just how much I absolutely love this book- Simon is adorable, his family has the cutest traditions, BLUE, there are many Harry Potter references, BLUE, all the friendships, Oreos, BLUE.

This is me wistfully thinking about how much I love this book and how much I want to see the movie…

To be honest, I don’t remember when I last had a book hangover. Usually, I slump because I’m too busy to read, not because of a specific book. Is that strange? I feel like it’s normal to slump over books, so I’m not sure why it doesn’t happen to me.

Now I’ve probably jinxed myself, but anyway, if I were to get a book hangover, I feel like a good time for it to happen would have been after The Blood of Olympus.

Percy Jackson was one of the first series I ever remember loving, and I was so excited to keep reading the next series. (Even when Rick Riordan was mean and gave us that horrible cliffhanger after Mark of Athena and I had to WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK TO COME OUT.) It was definitely hard to say goodbye to Percy and Annabeth, and I could see myself slumping after that.

My favorite book, A List of Cages, is completely full of the feels. I was not fine after reading it, in a Ross-esque kind of way.

Image result for i'm fine ross gif

A List of Cages had feels associated with wonderful friend groups, feels associated with brotherly relationships, and more serious feels, too. I cried while reading (and rereading) this book. Y’all, it just gave me all the emotions.

Ah, this is where Snape from Harry Potter comes in.

If you’re a frequent blog reader, then you likely know that a) I am quite a large Harry Potter fan, b) that I really don’t like Snape but c) I think he’s an amazingly well-written, ambiguous character.

He fits well for this one! Even though I like blueberry pancakes and I don’t like Snape so this is slightly sad for me. Snape is admittedly pretty clever and cruel, and you find out eventually that he does have a whole hidden backstory. Which isn’t an excuse for his actions, by the way.

arrowThe Pancake Book Tag 5This isn’t exactly the slippery-est plot I’ve ever read, but it still managed to shock me quite a few times, plus it needs more appreciation- Me Before You.

I won’t go into detail because this isn’t a place for spoilers, but wow. I cried and gasped and was incredibly surprised by this book!

arrowThe Pancake Book Tag 7

This has to be Dimple and Rishi from When Dimple Met Rishi!

At first (like Dimple), I was a little hesitant to get on board with their romance. Since the reader has chapters from both of their perspectives, both of their outlooks were clear to me- and I wasn’t sure how well they’d go together based on their very different thoughts and plans for the future.

However, the hopeless romantic in me eventually let myself enjoy the story and soon I was hoping for them to be together just as much as everyone else.

arrowThe Pancake Book Tag 8

This probably sounds bad, but I didn’t like the main character in We Were Liars.

Image result for offended face gif

It’s unusual for me to dislike the main character?? (If you’ve read this book, no, I didn’t dislike her because of what she did, necessarily.) Honestly, I just felt so unconnected and that made it a little hard to read. Overall, though, I did like this book.

arrowthe-pancake-book-tag-10.png

One of my newest favorite reads, Radio Silencehad a great diverse cast!

Nearly all the main characters were LGBTQ+ (bisexual, gay, demisexual representation), and the main main character was biracial (Ethiopian and white), while another side character was Korean. I can’t speak to the accuracy of the representation, but I thought the amount of diversity in this book was amazing and, well, it should be the norm in YA.

I loved it so much, wow!

All right, now for who I tag. 😉 Please feel no pressure to do this if I do tag you, and if I don’t but you’d like to participate, by all means, do so!

Thank you again to Becky for creating this tag and for tagging me- I had so much fun thinking of books that matched up! (Even though now I’m desperately wishing for some pancakes…)

I hope you’re all having a lovely April, and if you celebrate, have a wonderful Easter this coming Sunday. ✨

What’s your favorite type of pancakes? Do you slump after reading a really good book? What’s a book where you didn’t like the romance at first? I’d love to chat with you all in the comments.

  1. I definitely agree that pancakes are amazing! In fact I’d go as far as saying they’re my favourite food full stop! 🙂
I loved reading your answers for this tag Olivia. Ha, I think Kaz is the very definition of a sharp character. I would never want to be on his bad side. Also Simon Vs is a book I could read over and over again. I love the story, the characters, and the romance is just so sweet.
I haven’t read Radio Silence myself (or any of Alice Oseman’s books other than Heartstopper) but it’s on my TBR list and I can’t wait to get started! 🙂
Great post, and again great answers for this tag. 🙂 ❤️

    • Haha, they are so good! Everything I even look at this post I start craving them. 😉
Thank you so much, I’m so happy you enjoyed it. Simon Vs. is honestly so good, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until my recent reread, and that’s when I utterly fell in love with the story.
I hope you enjoy Radio Silence! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of Alice Oseman’s books as well.
      Thank you again, Beth! ❤

  2. yes yes yes pancakes ❤ I'm so happy you did this tag, I loved reading your answers!
So glad you mentioned Summer of Salt, I NEED to buy this book as soon as I can, it sounds so great. And A List of Cages is a PERFECT answer for all the feelings, I… felt everything and ahhh all the emotions. Couldn't handle it haha, but I love this booooook. ❤

  3. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING MY TAG, OLIVIA. This seriously made my day! You’re so awesome and thank you for the kind words. 😀

I desperately need to get on this Six of Crows bandwagon, I hear about it constantly! I’m currently on book 2 of the Grisha trilogy, very much enjoyed book 1, not so sure about book 2 so far. Bardugo’s got some really great sassy dialogue and it’s keeping my attention, I can see that if she continued to develop her style, Six of Crows could be epic. 🙂

Very happy to see Simon on your list. I felt like I could have picked him for several of these different categories. Oh and Snape is such a good pick! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that!

I do sometimes slump after a really good book or a long series, but it’s RARE. Like you, I’m much more likely to get into a negative reading slump, unfortunately!

    • AHHH, OF COURSE. I’m so happy that you created it, and thank you for tagging me originally!💓

Yes, Six of Crows was SO good- I just joined the bandwagon and I don’t regret it one bit. I’m hoping to read the Grisha trilogy soon, so I’ll let you know what I think of it when I do.

Aww, yes, Simon fit so well! He’s just adorable, wow. Snape is not so adorable but of course works very well in multiple of these categories, too. (I also thought of him for a character that repulses you, lol.)

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one! Though of course I wish reading slumps just didn’t exist and we wouldn’t have to talk about them at all.

  4. I totally agree with you listing Kaz as one of the characters. Also, When Dimple Met Rishi was one of the actual cutest pairings in the end? I totally see what you mean about them seeing like they’d clash as personalities, but I JUSt LOVED THEM.

    i agree with you about snape, he’s well-written, i just don’t like him…

also, i LOVE radio silence! it’s so diverse and amazing and gives me all of the feels and it’s my favorite book and im getting emotional just talking about i love love love it it’s so great i-

    • Thank you, Lydia! Haha, same. XD

Exactly?! He’s a great character and Alan Rickman was amazing at portraying him, but Snape is just so unlikeable and cruel.

IT IS SO AMAZING, AHHHH. I relate so much to all your feels, oh my gosh.

  6. I don’t even know where to start 😂

I’m so happy I’ve come across your blog because I LOVE THIS POST AND YOUR WRITING STYLE SO MUCH! 💘

Pancakes are the best (but yeah, waffles are a strong contender), as is Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (which, gaaah, the movie is incredible, too!). I’m not a big Snape fan either – homeboy could have dealt with his issues instead of using them as an excuse to be a nasty piece of work :/ Ha.

Alright, I’m done gushing. But thanks for having an awesome blog 😂

  7. Olivia, thank you so much for tagging me!
To be honest, this tag made me a bit shocked. I didn’t even know all these different types of pancakes existed!
Fun fact: I’ve never had pancakes before in my life. At least, not in the way most people do. Pancakes in Brazil are quite different: they have a roll shape, are stuffed with cheese or meat and commonly served with tomato sauce. As for the ‘American’ pancakes, I’ve never tried them before! I remember watching Disney Channel shows and the characters would always have pancakes for breakfast and I thought it was pretty amazing. When I visited the US, the hotels I stayed in didn’t really have a pancake option; I did have a lot of waffles, though, and they were pretty good! I’ve always imagined that pancakes tasted the same.
I think the ones with Nutella drizzle would be my favorite, though, because everything feels tasty with chocolate. What’s your favorite one?
I also got into a huge slump after finishing Blood of Olympus. I loved the book so much, I just wanted to read more from this world, and I didn’t have anything else left! I don’t feel this way about a lot of books, though. If anything, finishing a really good one makes me even more excited to read more. A really slow book can totally put me in a slump, though, and that’s probably why I stay away from long books like they’re poison, lol.
Great answers, Olivia! Once again, thank you so much for tagging me!

    • Ahh, of course! I also didn’t realize there were so many pancake varieties… 😉
I just looked up Brazilian pancakes and they look so delicious! (Now I want one, lol.) I would say that pancakes do taste pretty similar to waffles- sometimes they’re even made with the same generic mix and it just depends on what shape you put it in on if it will become a “waffle” or a “pancake.” XD
Mmm, I love Nutella. My favorite kind is definitely chocolate chip, because I’m with you in that chocolate makes everything so tasty.
It was so sad to say goodbye to the world after Blood of Olympus! I am glad that Rick Riordan has at least mentioned the characters in passing in some of his other series. And I am thankful we got to follow Percy through so many books!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Lais! ❤

  8. Omg this tag is so clever and you’re absolutely right, the graphics are gorgeous. Thank you so much for tagging me!! Also, I can’t wait for you to see Love, Simon! I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the changes they made for the movie, especially the ending, but overall it’s so heartwarming and I’m pretty sure it made me cry both times I watched it. And I 100% relate to your Mark of Athena parenthetical—I can remember all of my friends and I reading it as soon as it came out and then being like WHAT THE HECK WE HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE YEAR NOW.

    • Ahh, you’re welcome! I cannot wait to see Love, Simon…I feel like it would be the perfect movie to watch on a summer night in the next few months. Haha, yes- The Mark of Athena was one of the first series I read that I was actually reading as it was being written, and that made the cliffhanger all the more horrible!😂

  9. Oh, this tag is amazing! Thank you for tagging me :)) I think it would be very fun to have a book tag about breakfast foods in general. I think my favorite pancakes are fresh off the griddle chocolate chip pancakes where the chocolate is still melty.
I don’t slump after reading a really good book, but if I read a lot of books in a short amount of time, then I slump and need to “take a break” from reading.
Did you ever consider not finishing We Were Liars while reading? I’m curious because you said you didn’t like the main character-whenever I read books where I don’t really like any of the characters, I tend to not finish them. But I know some readers like to finish books they start. Part of me is like that, but part of me wants to get on the next thing, so usually what happens is that I super skim the rest of the book and call it a day.
Unrelated question-what’s your opinion on Ross? I’ve heard multiple people say they don’t like him and think he’s annoying. The only other Friends person I’ve heard people say they dislike is Phoebe because she’s too weird for them. And then I feel like most people’s favorites are Chandler (who I know is your favorite along with Phoebe-please correct me if I’m wrong) or Joey. I’m not sure who my favorite is. I feel like I like them altogether as a group but I don’t know how much I would like being friends with any one of them individually.
    Also, happy Easter!!!

    • You’re welcome! The breakfast food tag idea is amazing, you should put that into action someday. :)) I agree with your favorite type of pancake for sure!
Oh, that makes sense- I understand that for sure. Regarding We Were Liars, I didn’t consider not finishing it because the plot was so intriguing and I had to know what happened. But characters are really important, so in other cases (like in a contemporary that doesn’t have a mystery/huge climax) I can see myself not finishing it, or doing the skimming method, too.
Hmm, Ross. He can be annoying, but so can all the other friends. XD Personally I think he’s hilarious, especially since he gets into so many awkward situations. Overall, he’s not my favorite (yes, you were right about Chandler and Phoebe being my favorites!!) but I couldn’t imagine him not being a part of the show and I wouldn’t want him to not be. Haha, that makes sense- it would be a lot more fun to just be a part of the friends friend group rather than to be friends with just one of the friends. (Also, I think I have just invented a new tongue twister.)
      Happy Easter to you too!❤️
