June Recap // ft. my new fave books, a drastic haircut, & my current playlist!!

June was slow and a whirlwind all at the same time.

You know when you look back at a month’s accomplishments and it simultaneously feels like it’s been that month for ages, but also feels like time is slipping by you too fast? No, is this just me having an existential crisis?

Whether or not I’m the only one who feels that way- that’s how June felt to me! I read a lot of books and blogged a lot and ate way too many snowcones. Essentially, it was an incredibly *summer* month and yes, I have officially begun rambling and we’re only 99 words into this post.

Blog Title - Design #1 (33)

All of that to say, in this post I’m going to be recapping the month of June. I feel like a lot happened (but also nothing at all?) and I’m looking forward to properly squealing about what I read and what I did and all the normal things I usually talk about on here.

So, without further ado, cue the post!

For the first time in a long time, I had a good reading month.

I can most definitely attribute this to the fact that it’s currently summer vacation for me. I didn’t travel anywhere or do much this month, so it was the perfect opportunity to spend a lot of time reading, and that’s exactly what I did!

If only I had read one more book to perfectly fill out this layout. Come on Olivia, you ruined the aesthetic.

The slightly disproportionate layout aside, I was happy that only three of these books were rereads, which is a pretty good ratio for me, as I am The Rereading Queen™. I also discovered two of my all-time favorite books this month, Girls of Paper and Fire and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

I’ve already reviewed a few of these, but there are definitely some more that I need to dedicate some mini-reviews to in July. Let me know if there are any in particular that you definitely want to see a review for!

At the end of May, I shared my pride month TBR for June. I wanted to do a quick update on how I did- surprisingly, better than I expected! I hardly ever make concrete TBRs, so I was okay with the outcome of reading 4 out of the 6 books on my list.

The only books I didn’t get around to were What If It’s Us and Red, White, & Royal Blue. Both of these were checked out at the library, and I have holds on them, but they just haven’t been checked back in yet!

I did end up reading Autoboyography, Girls of Paper and Fire, Blanca & Rojaand The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I also read This is Kind of an Epic Love Story, which wasn’t on my original TBR, but did have LGBTQ+ main characters.

Overall, I discovered a lot of really amazing books through making this TBR and I’m really glad I did. I hope you all had a wonderful pride month!🌈

  • Clean out my Goodreads TBR

June ended up being the first reading month in a long time that I wasn’t at least slightly disappointed in myself about. Thanks school, I blame you for that. Even though I’m doing a little more traveling in July, I’m hoping that I continue to read a lot because I know my time to enjoy a ton of leisure reading is limited.

All in all, not a bad blogging month at all. Once again, this unusual success is brought to you by my lack of school this June!

On June 10th, I implemented my annual summer blogging schedule, in which I post twice a week instead of my normal once a week. I have to say, this change makes a huge difference in the amount of time I spend drafting posts, coming up with ideas, responding to comments, and interacting with other blogs. I now have respect for bloggers that blog so frequently on a whole other level??

All that to say, I posted 7 times this month, which is above my average. 😉

I didn’t do well at keeping track of posts I loved (I never do and it makes me so sad) but there are a few posts that I definitely want to shout-out. In July I’m going to make a really big effort to always bookmark the posts that I adored so I can include them in my recap posts.

How I Did on June Blogging Goals:

  • Keep to my summer blogging schedule ✅
  • Read other posts & stay caught up ✅
  • Keep track of posts I loved ❌
  • Do a tag ✅ I did two, does that make me an overachiever?
  • Do a discussion post ✅
  • Mini reviews ✅
  • Have fun ✅ guys, I had so much fun blogging this month!

My July Blogging Goals:

  • Mostly stay on schedule
  • Do a tag
  • Bookish discussion post
  • Blog hop MORE
  • Do some blogging housekeeping things

It genuinely makes me so happy that I have time to blog and am able to interact with the community and frequently post on here. I don’t say it enough, but I’m so grateful for all the support you’ve all given me and my blog!💓 I’ve truly met the kindest people through blogging.

I’m going to try and stay as active as possible in July, but I do know that I will be doing a small amount of traveling, so there will definitely be times when I don’t have internet or just don’t have the time to stay caught up in my Reader. I’ll be attempting to schedule all my posts for when I’ll be gone, though, so I hope it doesn’t affect my blogging too much!

Y’all, I just love summer. I may have said that too many times already. I just love the days of sleeping in, staying up watching Netflix or reading, finishing a book in one sitting, and going to get snowcones way too many times in one week.

That sentence, in a nutshell, describes my July.

  • I finished The Office. It was a sad day when I watched an episode of The Office and there wasn’t a “watch next episode” button to click. *tear* Please scream about it in the comments with me because it’s just too good??
  • I got a really massive haircut. I FINALLY CUT MY HAIR. It was really, really long and I was scared to cut it but I did and now it’s shoulder length and ahh!! I didn’t take a before and after picture from the back (because I’m chicken and cannot show my face) but please trust me on the fact that it is crazy different. I kind of love it, though.
  • I saw Aladdin the musical! One of my friends had an extra ticket and generously invited me to come with her, and it was AMAZING- so funny, beautiful, emotional, and the entire cast was brilliant. That’s a picture of my playbill, and then on the left is a picture of the city looking all gloomy and ominous when we were driving in for the show.
  • I ate a lot of snowcones. There’s a snowcone place in my town that is basically famous to everyone who lives in our town?? Like I can’t go there without seeing someone that goes to my school. I went…quite a few times so far.
  • I hung out with friends! We got snowcones, went to the pool, went thrifting, just hung out and watched movies and talked- I’ve gotten to see a lot of my friends so far this summer and it’s truly the best. I love them so much.

arrow

The last thing I wanted to share in this wrap-up is my current summer playlist, because I’ve been listened to a lot of the songs on it on repeat and they’re definitely worth talking about.

There aren’t that many songs on my playlist yet, just because summer is only about half done. For me, my summer ’19 playlist isn’t just a playlist that has songs I want to listen to in summer, it’s like a playlist of songs I discovered or became obsessed with during the summer. If that makes any sense.

If I had to pick my top favorites, it would probably be I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran and Justin Beiber, If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes, and You Need to Calm Down by Taylor Swift. Those are my current obsession obsessions, but I know there are more songs just waiting to become my new obsession.

arrow

That concludes my June recap! This post was longer than my normal recap posts, but I felt like there was a lot to cover. It’s been somewhat of a long, delicious month. And now I sound like I’m on the Creepy Cooking Channel. Thank you for reading my ramblings, if you’ve made it this far!

I hope you all had a great June and that your July is even better.✨

How was your June? What song are you currently obsessed with? Have you seen any musicals lately? What are your plans for summer? I’d love to talk with you in the comments.

  1. you should watch parks & rec next if you haven’t – it’s similar to the office and it’s super funny! i’m super obsessed with mxmtoon and paramore’s discography, but then again, i am all year, haha :))

  2. Gosh, even though I already had my three months of summer, I’m so jealous of how you’re describing your summer so far, because I miss sleeping in and finishing books in two days!! sigh, it seems like you’re making the most of it though and I’m really really happy for you 💚 and same, You Need to Calm Down is such a bop. ALSO, YOU READ 14 BOOKS? (ok same about the aesthetic though. before I ran into some technical difficulties, i meant to group the nine books I read in June into three pictures, and I was so satisfied that I could do that). I don’t think I’ve ever read ten or more books a month in the history of my reading life. but nevertheless, I’m so happy that you found some new faves! I hope you July is even better 🙂

    • Aww, thank you so much Caitlin! I’m sorry your summer is over, but I’m glad you had time to relax and enjoy yourself while it lasted.💓Ahh, it really is?? Like I can’t stop listening. HAHA, THE AESTHETIC TROUBLES ARE REAL. (The extra sad part is that I finished a book just after midnight on July 1st, so it almost made the June recap and would have perfected the aesthetic. *sigh*) Thank you so, so much! I hope you have the best July, and thank you for the sweetest comment.🤗

  3. Ahhh I love this post so much, Olivia!! ❤

I recently started watching The Office again (I gave it a try once, but didn't like it??), and I'm still not sure I like the humor, but you're giving me hope that I'll like it eventually, because our tastes are very similar. ❤

I can't wait to listen to all the songs on your playlist that I don't know yet—and I'm so happy you loved Aladdin!!

Sending you hugs, can't wait to chat more with you again, now that it's summer & we're both so much less stressed and busy ❤

Aww, I hope you like it! It took me a while to get really into it (at first I would just watch an episode every now and then) but once I got into it, I really loved it. I think I’ll always love Friends more?? but it is a great show!

YAY, that makes me so happy. And thank you, ahh!

Me too! I’m so, so happy about that. I LOVE YOU, HAPPY JULY🤗

  4. Yes I know exactly what you mean about June going by really fast but also like nothing happened!!!
Wow you’ve read so many books– that is amazing!! And I’m so glad that you found some favourites and I’m so glad Evelyn Hugo was one of them!! You also did incredible on your reading and blogging goals– *dance party*!! I struggle to stay active on bookstagram too– I go through phrases where I use it a lot to where I barely use it so I can be quite inconsistent!!
Ahh … the office is so good!! The characters were great and it was so easy to watch!! *screams about it with you*!
And yes deciding to cut your hair is always a big decision!! I’m sure it looks amazing!!
I went to see Aladdin the musical and it was amazing– I loved it too!!
I hope you have a great July and have fun travelling!! I haven’t got any plans for my summer at the minute!! The song I am currently obsessed with is ‘standing outside the fire’ by Garth Brooks which is kind of weird as it is one my dad listens to and usually I’m not overly bother by it but I have listened to it a lot lately!!

    • Haha, it’s crazy, right??! This year really needs to slow down.
Aww, thanks so much. Evelyn Hugo truly was amazing, wow, I can’t stop thinking about it eve now. *has dance party with you* Staying active on bookstagram really is such a struggle?! Sometimes I’ll forget to check it for days on end and other days I’m completely on top of my game.🙈
IT REALLY IS. Who are your favorite characters? I feel like I have to say Pam and Jim, but then I also love Erin.
      Thank youuu! *hugs you*
That’s so, so exciting and I’m glad you loved as much as I did. It made me love Aladdin 10000x more!
Thank you so much for the kind comment!💓I hope the rest of your summer is wonderful, and that you have a lovely time just relaxing. I’ll also have to look up that song, thank you for the recommendation!

      • It really does need to slow down!! 😂
Yes Evelyn Hugo was so good!!
Yay to dance parties!! Yes it is a struggle– I’m the same. One day I will be on top of bookstagram– maybe?!!? 😂
Ohh.. hard question!! I do love Pam and Jim– so sweet and I love when Jim looks at the camera!! And Erin is so sweet!! I actually really like Dwight– he grew on me but I find him really funny.
        You’re welcome *hugs you back*
Yes same I think it made me love Aladdin more– it was done so well. And I loved how they did ‘A Whole New World’!!
You’re welcome!! Thank you so much!! ❤

  5. mmmmMMMm, Snowcones…. I haven’t had one in sooooo long — but there used to be a Snow cone truck that made excellent snow cones where we used to live. And thanks a bunch Olivia, NOW I’m hungry for one. XD

You’ve definitely read WAY more books this month than I did! XD I’ve read…like…three, lol: Twinepathy by C.B. Cook (ehhh, not recommended), Live Without You by Sarah Grace Grzy (surprisingly, this wasn’t bad, and that’s saying something because I don’t like romance novels XD), and my first ever Alpha-read (now I can finally say I’ve officially Alpha read a book! ;P ).

    Liked by 1 person

    • Ahaha, I’m sorry for making you crave snowcones.😂I’m also sorry that there isn’t a good snowcone place near you, that is a monstrosity??

Ahh, no, three books is still really good! Congrats on an alpha read and I’m glad you liked some of what you read this month. Thanks for your comment, and happy July!

    • Thank you! Okay, yes, I don’t understand that phenomenon at all.😂I will definitely be doing a review of Evelyn Hugo! It will probably be a mini review since it’s adult and I don’t recommend it to my younger readers necessarily, but I’ll still be reviewing it for sure. I love all of those songs so much!! I hope you have an amazing July.💓

  7. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post! 💓💓 Also, real talk. There is no such thing as *too* many snowcones! And yesssss, I stan shorter haircuts! I try bullying everyone into cutting their hair short. As someone with super heavy and thick hair, I hold by that shorter hair is a bajillion times more comfortable.

And I’m also loving If I Can’t Have You and I Don’t Care! So many great songs so far this summer, I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer brings. I hope you have a fantastic July as well 💕💕

    • Ahh, I loved it! ❤ Haha, there really can never be too many snowcones…we all know I will be eating them nonstop for the rest of summer?! So far, I really am loving having shorter hair. I'll always be a long hair gal but it's a nice change and super easy to take care of now!

Those are really and truly the best songs for summer. I can never get them out of my head.😂Thank you, I hope you do as well!

  8. Great to hear that you’ve had a great month! You are so brave to cut your hair! I am so scared of cutting it short because I had to fight my mum to let me grow it out and I’m paranoid that the hairdresser will just cut it short! I am absolutely obsessed with Ophelia by the Lumineers and I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jetts and the Blackhearts! My two week holiday starts in 3 days and I can’t wait to just hole up and read my books 🙂

    • Thank you, Emma!💗Cutting my hair was honestly pretty scary, but once it was over with I was happy with it. If you ever do cut your hair short, I bet you’ll end up loving it- and if you don’t, it can always grow out again, that’s what I had to keep telling myself to pysch myself up, haha. I haven’t heard of either of those, but I’ll look them up! Yay, I’m glad you get a holiday soon and I hope it’s super relaxing. Happy reading!

Yay for summer vacation! I just started listening to the From Twinkle, With Love audiobook, and so far I’m enjoying it well enough. Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful July and that you can accomplish all of your goals! 🙂

My June seemed to go fast but I did so much within! I look back at my calendar astounded: how did I do all that?
I really want to read ‘To All The Boys I Loved Before’ but my library is small and I haven’t managed to order it yet. I’m considering investing in Netflix because all them Friends episodes that need to be watched…
I haven’t started summer holidays yet but I have two weeks left of school.
Congratulations on reading 10 books! I think I may have read a similar amount (I read a lot last month, some say too much 😂). In my summer I’m also hoping to get into my TBR.
I love your bookstagram so much! You’ve been doing really well with it (certainly better than me…)

Back in line, now… XD I’m not sure if I had the chance to comment on your pride tbr post, but in case I didn’t – I loved it. LOVED IT. can’t wait to read the recs <33 *throws rainbow confetti * congrats on all of the goals you accomplished this past month, and good luck to the ones you made for July!

oh my goodness. The Office. I still remember the ending tho I'm crying?? I don't know about you, but for me it dawns on you that the series ended when you realize that you're going to hear the theme song for the last time. does that sentence make sense? YES I will scream with you, always. I'm sure you look amazing with your shorter hair! I was literally listening to If I Can't Have You less than 10 minutes ago – it's so good. can you believe i still haven’t started watching The Office? i know i’m missing out but also i’m excited b/c there’s SO MUCH content waiting for me. however, i finished b99’s last episode recently and physically felt the sadness come over me so i get ya 😭

It makes me sad because I know when I go back to school, I’ll return to my NOT accomplishing a lot of things phase 😭 But I’m so so happy you got to read so many books (that’s seriously an amazing amount!!), especially when two of my favorites became two of your favorites! So happy you could be more active in the blogging community — it truly is just an amazing feeling, isn’t it?? I’m hoping I can hold onto it when I go back to school in August!

  18. okay, but we are low-key twinning??
first: i also got a drastic haircut recently and i’m super happy too. i’ll say, though, i am already anticipating a similar cycle like the past two times i cut my hair super short. my hair will be too long and tangly and dry > i’ll cut it > regret after two months > let it grow again > it will get long and tangly and dry > i’ll cut it again, lol. it’s the cycle of life apparently?? i do hope i find better ways to style it now, so i don’t regret cutting it so fast. mostly, it’s just hard because my hair is between wavy and curly and being short it gets even crazier, lol, so i need patience to style it (which i don’t have). BUT, i hope you do not regret cutting yours and enjoy life with shorter hair!
second: i’m listening to a lot of taylor swift & shawn mendes too, plus i also had a song in my june playlist that said brazil in the title.
AnyWaY! i’m happy to hear you’ll have more time to post this summer, since i’m always happy to read more posts from you. to where are the trips you’ve planned to take this summer? i’m looking forward to hearing more about the great places & experiences you’ve had!

    • AHH, YAY. I love that we’re twinning. 😉
That’s so exciting about your haircut! I truly relate to the cycle, except mine is a little different- mine goes cuts hair and likes it > grows it back out > falls in love with long hair, can’t imagine cutting it > resists cutting for as long as possible > cuts hair and repeat. Here’s to no regrets this time for both of us!
Ahh, I love that so much. Taylor and Shawn are both killing it with their new music!
Thank you so much, that means a lot. Wishing the same for you! I just returned from a small trip to my grandma’s house and I’m going to Nashville, Tennessee later this month. Hopefully I’ll talk about my Nashville trip on my blog??
Thank you so much, you too! ❤
