An Update on My Summer Bucket List // ft. my playlist, watching the marvel movies, & lots of reading!!

Sadly, summer has come to close for me.

It hurt me to write those words (even though I can’t pretend I’m not excited for fall), but they’re true. My new dance season started this week, I go back to school this Thursday, and those are the signs that summer 2019 has truly ended.

For the sake of holding myself accountable for what I did and didn’t accomplish this summer, and also just to have fun, I decided to go back and reread my summer bucket list post from June. This was originally a collab with Annie, and it was a great way to start off the summer! Except now it’s time to see just how drastically I failed (or achieved) my goals.

Blog Title - Design #1 (45)

Part of me is sad when I look back on my post from June because I was so full of excitement for summer when I wrote it, but the other part of me knows that summer happened, it was amazing, but now it’s inevitably time for it to end.

Without further dramatics, let’s get into the post!

Read 30 books.✅

Technically, at this moment I have read about 28.75 books, but I’m going to count this goal as a success because I also technically have three more days of summer left, and I have no doubt that I’ll be able to read 1.25 books in that time.

I was able to read a lot of really great books this summer! Some of them are my new favorites, some of them not so much, but I generally enjoyed all of them. I’m glad I was able to have enough time to read a lot during my break from school.

I feel like I should shoutout some of my favorite books I read this summer! Here are a few, in no particular order. 😉

Girls of Paper and Fire (Girls of Paper and Fire, #1)The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoGoodbye, PerfectMy Life Next DoorAnger Is a GiftThe Forbidden WishRed, White & Royal BlueIf There's No Tomorrow

Okay, two of these are fantasy and two of them aren’t even YA?? Clearly, this summer took me out of my reading comfort zone, but I’m not complaining about it.

Do random acts of kindness.❌

I didn’t do this, and I’m disappointed in myself.

The thing that’s the most disappointing about this is because I easily could have done this! The truth is, I forgot I put this on my bucket list until I went back and looked at my list to write this post.

The good thing about random acts of kindness, though, is that you can do them at any time of year and you can do them whether you’re busy or have an open schedule! So I will definitely be doing this in the future.

arrow

Watch (most of) the Marvel movies.❌

This is definitely the goal that I’m the saddest about not completing. Although I didn’t completely fail, to be fair. Just mostly failed.

The backstory behind this goal was that Annie and I made a pact that I would watch the Marvel movies with summer, and she would read and watch Harry Potter. I feel bad that I didn’t uphold my end of the deal, especially since I’m pretty sure she upheld her end a lot better than I did mine!

I think the reason why I failed so badly at this was first that I underestimated the difficulty of actually attaining the movies and I also underestimated how often I would be watching movies in the summer. It was easy to look ahead at summer and say how easy it would be to watch a lot of movies, but the reality is, I don’t watch movies every night or even all that often.

There’s not a good excuse for me not achieving this, but I will say that I did watch five Marvel movies, and I genuinely loved the ones I watched.

Image result for it's pretty great gif

That’s my reaction to all the Marvel movies I’ve watched so far, which are:

  • The Avengers
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Doctor Strange
  • Avengers: Infinity Wars
  • Spiderman Homecoming

Don’t worry, this doesn’t stop here. I’m going to keep watching until I have watched all the Marvel movies because I really have enjoyed them way more than I ever thought I would have!

I never thought I was the type of person who watched action movies, but I have discovered that I am exactly the kind of person that watches action movies. Yes, I may have screamed out loud once when the Hulk jumped out of nowhere, but mostly I’ve held it together and actually watched the movies without covering my eyes!

Plus, the characters in the Marvel movies are AMAZING, I literally laugh out loud at all the funny parts, and the dramatic music makes me emotional at times. I’m really excited to keep on watching more, and my new goal is to watch all through the school year and next summer and have them done then! Shoutout to Annie for inspiring me to watch them. I’m sorry I failed at our deal though. :((

Get a tan.✅❌

I’m really unclear on whether or not I should count this as a success or failure, so I’m just going to count as it both since I crave success.

It’s not like I didn’t get a tan? I definitely was paler at the beginning of summer. But I still would consider myself a very pale person, and I’m still not as tan as your average person is during the winter. It’s sad, but true.

arrow

Have a book and movie Harry Potter marathon.❌

I know, I know. It’s saddened me greatly that I didn’t do this.

Image result for harry potter gifs sad

This gif is me staring off into the distance, regretting this turn of events and questioning whether or not I even deserve to be a Harry Potter fan right now.

Just kidding! Mostly. While I am sad, I ultimately decided not to reread the series over the summer because a) I just reread it in January/February and b) I wanted to save my reread for a time I really felt like I needed it.

I was able to go to the library a lot this summer and also had a stream of new books to read, so it just didn’t make sense to return to Harry Potter. I’m planning to do my reread in fall or winter when I’m feeling stressed from school and want a series to fall back on that will comfort me and be familiar.

As for the movies, my friend and I (who I marathoned the movies with last November) decided we would wait and do it over one of our school breaks. We did get matching Hufflepuff shirts to wear though, so that’s exciting.⚡️

Prepare for school stuff next year. ✅

Looking back, I definitely could have prepared more, but I think I did enough to have properly achieved this goal.

I prepped for the SAT using Khan Academy, which I highly recommend if you’re looking for an online source to prepare with. It has customizable practices and is free, plus there are literally thousands of videos on there in case you’ve forgotten something. Just like I forgot all of geometry. *throws peace sign*

I didn’t end up having to prepare for as much school stuff as I thought I would because I was planning on taking an advanced chemistry class next year, for which we had summer preparation homework, but about a week ago my counselor emailed me and told me taking the class didn’t fit in my schedule. I was disappointed, but at least I don’t have to do more summer work, so it ended up working out for the best.

Keep improving and growing my blog and bookstagram. ✅

It makes me very excited to say that I did achieve this goal! Making goals with the general endpoint of “growth” in mind makes it easy to say you’ve achieved it, since growth can be very small or very large and still be “growth.”

If that makes any sense whatsoever.

Image result for what gif

Okay, that was definitely confusing. I just meant that unless I completely abandoned my blog and Instagram all summer, I would probably have some semblance of growth, and could therefore count this goal as achieved.

However, I feel like I was able to grow a lot over the summer! I posted more often than I ever have, I blog hopped and discovered many new bloggers, I stayed active on bookstagram and grew my following. I would say that besides hanging out with family and friends, one of my main focuses this summer was improving my blog and bookstagram and that paid off.

Shoutout to all you amazing people for making blogging especially wonderful for me this summer, because the blogosphere is one of the main reasons I find the motivation to continue working hard on my blog!

arrow

Go on adventures. ✅

Adventures most certainly occurred this summer. This was my first summer with a driver’s license, and I have to say, it made my summer way better because I could just…go places with my friends?? Even if our parents were at work??

Some things adventures I had:

  • My friend and I went to the top of a parking garage and took dance pictures of each other
  • I had a sleepover on a trampoline!! apparently, I’m basic™
  • Lots of trips to the local snowcone place with friends and my sister
  • I went to Nashville! (a post is to come on that, I promise)
  • Pool trips with pals
  • I got a really drastic haircut, and I feel like this should count as an adventure because I still can’t believe I actually did it

It was an adventurous and fun summer, to say the least!

arrow

Make bread from scratch.❌

All those days I spent at home, watching Netflix or reading and yet I never actually ended up making bread?

Image result for the office fail gifs

Wow, I can actually HEAR Andy’s voice in this gif. Anyway, while I’m disappointed in myself for not baking bread, this is something that I can easily do at any other point in my life. It wasn’t specific to this summer, so at least one positive side to this is that I can literally do this any other time I want?

arrow

Find new shows and new music. ✅

This summer I discovered two new TV shows, in addition to rewatching episodes of some of my all-time favorites (Friends, Gilmore Girls, Glee, The Office).

The first show is Queer Eye! This was recommended to me by my sister and one of my best friends, and once I started watching it I started noticing that a lot of people on the blogosphere watch it too. I couldn’t recommend it enough!

I love the Fab 5, it’s so heartwarming, it has its funny moments, and it’s just so entertaining and makes me feel happy. I wouldn’t say I binge it, just because I don’t usually binge reality TV, but if I need a pick-me-up or am having a boring day, I will 100% go to this show. I’m currently on season 3 of 4!

The second show I watched this summer was Riverdale. I completely missed the hype when this first came out, but my best friend and I decided to watch it together this summer, and it’s been seriously so fun!

It’s definitely not perfect, but my friend and I have fun laughing at the unrealistic or cringey parts, and I got really invested in the characters and storyline. We finished season 3 just a few days ago, but they’re currently filming season 4, so I’m glad that it’s not over yet.

Finally, I also was able to find lots of new music this summer. I made a playlist at the beginning of June and every time I discovered a new song or became addicted to a song this summer, I added it to the playlist.

I’ve been playing this playlist on repeat- every time I’m getting ready for the day, cleaning, driving anywhere- and it’s the perfect representation of my summer.

There’s a lot on here, from all of Taylor Swift’s new releases, to some songs from Ed Sheeran’s new album, to throwbacks, to random songs I discovered and started to love during the summer.

I love listening to music, and hopefully this gives you an insight into what I listen to on a daily basis! Because this literally is…exactly what I listen to on a daily basis.

arrow

Well, I have to say, I didn’t do quite as horribly as I thought I was going to on these goals. Even for the ones I didn’t succeed on, at least I was partially there and it wasn’t a complete and utter failure. 😉

Like I said, I’m sad to be saying goodbye to summer, but fall is my favorite season, so I know good things lie ahead. If you’re still on your summer vacation, I hope it’s wonderful and glorious and you take advantage of every second. If you’re also returning to school, like me…you got this, I believe in you, we can do it!

Thank you all for reading! I hope you have an amazing day.

How was your summer? Did you go anywhere fun, tell me about it! Have you watched any Marvel movies? Do we share the same music taste? I’d love to talk with you all in the comments.

  1. It seems like you enjoyed your summer, and that’s what matters! ❤
I still have one month left of summer. I don't have to move out until October, but in September I'll have activities at my home university, so that gives me August and the first week of September to enjoy. I think I've enjoyed my summer so far, too. I've gone to the beach a couple of times – didn't get as much of a tan as I would have liked -, gone out with friends, had some performances with my group from university. I have a couple more planned for this month, but I mostly wanna read. I also need to keep writing my notes on my laptop and take care of papers for my semester abroad, which makes it seem to close already ))): I want more time of summer!

    • Thank you, Marta!❤️
I hope the last month of your summer is super enjoyable! That’s really exciting that you have that much time left. I definitely relate to not getting too tan, haha- I mean, I go to the pool and go outside but yet, I just can never get too tan! Here’s to hoping this month is full of reading and planning ahead for you. That’s really cool about your semester abroad though, ahh! Thanks for your kind comment. 🙂

  2. I haven’t watched ALL the marvel movies, but I’ve watched MOST.

Thor Ragnarok, Far from Home, and AntMan are a few of my faves. Also Captain marvel (mainly because of that intro)

But Doctor Strange is a great one too- it was the first non spiderman marvel movie I watched

    • That’s awesome!!

Ohh, I’m excited because I haven’t watched any of those, so I must have some good ones ahead of me. 😉 So far out of the ones I’ve seen, my favorite was The Avengers: Age of Ultron! I just really liked the character dynamic and plot in that one.

Doctor Strange was the first Marvel movie I watched! I liked it a lot, and I got so excited when he showed up in Infinity Wars, haha.

  4. You may not have reached your goals but it sounds like you had an awesome summer! I can definitely relate to wanting to reread Harry Potter but wanting to read other books!

  5. Aw this is such a wholesome post! Ok, you didn’t manage to do some things but you should still feel super accomplished because you seem to have had so much fun? And you literally did all the best things? So definitely don’t feel bad for not completing your bucket list!
I would kill for a trampoline sleepover – I had no idea that was a thing! Now it’s on my bucket list LOL I also always feel like the simpler the goal, the easier it is to forget about it or just postpone it because you know you’ll do it (it’s so simple, right?) WRONG. You forget about it all together and only focus on the hardest goals! I learned that a long time ago but this post reminded me how I need to keep it in mind for the future.
Anyway, again, brilliant post, Olivia, and I hope you get to a) finish your reading goal of 1.25 books and b) have the best week ever 🙂 Thanks for sharing! ❤

Haha! It’s a trend that’s been going around, and since my friend has a Youtube channel, she wanted us to try it out to make a video about it. Wiser words have never been spoken! That’s such an great rule to live by and continue reminding myself of so that I don’t neglect the smaller goals.
Aww, thank you again! This comment seriously made my day. I hope you have the best week, too!❤️

  6. 😂 I don’t know if that’s a fair exchange! 8 Harry Potter movies vs. 23 Marvel movies? I’ve seen all the Marvel movies, but I was watching them over the past few years, so it’s not like I had to catch up on over 48 hours of movies at once.

Ooh, sleeping on a trampoline sounds like so fun! (If it doesn’t rain) Omg, I just started watching Queer Eye last week, it’s so goood!! It looks like you accomplished so many of your goals, loved reading this update!

    • Haha! Well, it was the Harry Potter books and movies, so getting through the books could make hours and hours. I’m really excited to keep watching the Marvel movies, and since I know you’ve watched them, I might fangirl about them to you, haha!😂

It was! We actually didn’t last the whole night because we were seriously getting eaten by mosquitoes, but it was fun while it lasted. Yes, Queer Eye is amazing! Who’s your favorite in the Fab 5 (if you can pick)?

Thank you for reading and for this comment! ❤️

  7. Sounds like you did great on your goals. I always have a long TBR list and I still really want to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo but my library doesn’t have it and I’ve had close to no money to buy it. I actually have money now so it probably won’t be long till I actually read it.
Ooh, you’re watching the Marvel movies. Most of the ones you watched are the best ones anyway but the first Thor and Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy are great, too. And Agents of SHIELD (which is a TV show that I’ve only watched the first season of). I’m behind on Marvel movies, too.
Do you have a favorite character?
I’m partial to Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff so she’s probably my favorite. I love Natasha Romanoff, Tony Stark, Carol Danvers and all of the Guardians of the Galaxy (Mantis is really, really cute. Idk why I find her cute).

    Liked by 2 people

    • Thank you, McKayla!🤗I hope you get to read it soon, I know it’s pretty hyped up, but in my opinion it’s definitely worth the read.
Yes! Ohh, good to know, thanks for the recommendations. I think my favorite characters would have to be Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff, but I really love them all (well, all the good characters, haha).
I haven’t met Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff or Carol Danvers yet! I’ve slightly met Mantis (I think) because she had an appearance in one of the Avengers movies, but I haven’t actually watched the Guardians of the Galaxy movies yet. I think my dad bought them though, so hopefully I’ll see them soon!

      Liked by 1 person

      • Yes, I hope so, too. Sometimes hyped books are really, really good and other times they’re very bad. But books like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson were super hyped and super great.
        You’re welcome.
Yes, Natasha is awesome and Tony is also. Yup, although sometimes villains are likeable. Not usually in Marvel movies, though…
Carol is the protagonist of Captain Marvel and is in Endgame (which I haven’t seen) and she’s pretty cool.
Mantis, Gamora, Peter Quill, Baby Groot and Rocket Raccoon were all in Infinity War and they’re all great characters. Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely awesome.
Hmm, I thought Wanda was in Age of Ultron…..maybe she wasn’t or didn’t use that name (it’s been awhile since I’ve watched Age of Ultron). She’s the one with the sort of gothic outfits who has almost invincible powers that look like red lightning. Also **spoiler if you haven’t watched age of Ultron which you have so it shouldn’t be a problem*** her brother, who’s power was he could run super fast died, and she’s dating Vision. If she used a different name that should help you remember who she is. If she just wasn’t in it……..then that isn’t helpful of me.

        Liked by 1 person

        • So true!
Oh, good to know. I have yet to see Endgame or Guardians of the Galaxy, but hopefully I’ll see them soon.
OHHH, yes, I do know her! Sorry about that, haha. I just didn’t know her name. For some reason I always referred to her in my head as “the magic twin.” No, yes, I really love her too! She’s so powerful and a great character.

          Liked by 1 person

          • “The magic twin” XD. Now why does that sound like something I would come up with? Actually, one time I was watching a TV show called The Librarians and the villain in one of the episodes had recreated the Minotaur’s labyrinth under a skyscraper. She was the CEO of a….kinda evil company (and she was played by Tricia Helfer who played Number Six in Battlestar Galactica, Carla in Burn Notice and Alexandra Forrest in Chuck). Anyway, the character’s name was Karen Willis but I just called her ‘the Minotaur lady’ in my head for a long time (and when I finally found out her name I mispronounced it…..a lot.
Yes, she is very powerful and there’s something intriguing about her personality. Idk what exactly it is but I love her so much.

  8. I’m glad you enjoyed your summer and completed most of your goals, Olivia! 💕 I can’t believe you had a sleepover on a trampoline — I would be wayy too scared of the dark to do that, haha. 😭 And there’s so many great songs on your playlist! I’m so obsessed with Ocean Eyes. Hope you enjoy school and the rest of your reads for the year! ❤️ ❤️

    • Thank you, Faith!💘Haha, okay, we didn’t actually last all night because of the bugs, but I got surprisingly used to the dark after a little bit. We also had fairy lights, so that helped! Ocean Eyes is awesome and it’s so perfect for summer because, well, it reminds me of the ocean. Thank you again, wishing you all the best!🤗

I am very proud to announce that this ~ordinarily~ pale girl of Mexican descent typing this right now, who got none of the lovely easily-tannable-already-a-pretty-olive-skin tone genes that everyone else in my family has, actually got bronze this summer :’) I also read loads of books this summer! I didn’t have a particular aim, but I did know that by the end of summer, I would be 10 books away from my goal of 50 for the year. I’m there! I actually also wanted to watch all the Marvel films this summer, as well as catch up on Youtube subscriptions….but I didn’t. I lived waaaay more in the moment and spent less time on my phone, so that’s a pretty good trade :’)

You’re definitely going to reach your goal for 50 books for the year.💖Even though you didn’t get to watch as much stuff as you wanted, I agree that living in the moment is way better. I want to watch the Marvel movies too, but CAN’T FIND ANY OF THE EARLY ONESSSSSS. Why is it so hard?? I want to see what the hype is aboutttttttttttttttttt. 😭

Good luck going back to school!

Okay, yes, it is so hard to find some of the movies?? I appreciate that a few of them are on Netflix, but none of the super early ones really are. I’m mostly relying on Redbox and my library, haha!

Thank you so much! If you’re going back to school, sending you all the luck with that, too. ❤

Ahhh thanks for updating us on your bucket lists because I’m actually really curious to see how you’ve been doing 💖💖💖 I think you did really well with your goals so even though you didn’t finish everything, you still did a great job!! Reading 30 books is SUCH a great achievement and you should be proud. Even though you didn’t get to have your movie marathons as planned, I’m still super glad you got to see such great adventures. I’m not sure if you watched it yet, but you should totally watch ANT-MAN!! It’s my favorite Marvel movie. Everything about it is just so funny and lighthearted!

Best of luck as you go back to school, and keep us updated!!

I think (?) it’s on Netflix, so hopefully it can be one of the next ones I watch. The guy who plays Ant-Man is actually a minor character on the later seasons of Friends, so that makes me want to watch it even more, haha. 😉

Thank you so much!! I hope your year goes amazingly too.

  14. but can we just talk about how all the covers you put as your most favorite reads of the summer look great next to each other? so aesthetically pleasing without even trying!
i’ve been thinking a lot about doing more random acts of kindness as well. earlier this year, my country was struck with a lot of tragedies and sad news, and recently, in the US, we also saw a lot of bad things happening related to gun violence. these things make me feel powerless as i feel like everyone around me is just filled with negative emotions and i really wish i could do more to remind them that there’s still kindness and good out there.
i do hope you get to watch black panther, because it’s honestly my favorite. i’m shocked you watched doctor strange out of every marvel movie, because i feel like this is the one most people ignore, lol (including me! i’ve never watched it).
wow how does a sleepover on a trampoline is basicTM stuff? lol. i’d never heard of anyone doing this before! it sounds fun, but also cold? and what about the bugs? i hope it was still fun!
wishing you an amazing fall, olivia! here’s to amazing things happening this season as well! 💞

    Liked by 1 person

    • Haha! I feel like it’s apparent that I gravitate toward a similar book cover aesthetic.😂
Your reasoning for random acts of kindness is phenomenal! You just motivated me to do more and more, because you’re so right, if we can spread love and kindness in any way we can, then we should.
I’ve seen half of Black Panther before (on the last day of school last year) but I’m hoping to watch the full thing soon, especially since it’s on Netflix so I should be able to access it. Haha, the reason I watched Doctor Strange was because I told my family I wanted to watch a Marvel movie, and my sister had already seen most of the others, so she wanted us to watch that one so it could be a new movie experience for her, too. XD
Lol, there’s a trend going around called “VSCO girl,” and my best friend has a youtube channel and wanted to do a video of us trying (and failing) to be VSCO girls, and one of the things people always do is have a trampoline sleepover. We actually didn’t last all night on the trampoline because of the bugs! But it was quite warm, because where I live it’s usually around 90-100 degrees Farenheit this time of year.
Thank you so much, Lais! Wishing you the best season, too. Thank you for always leaving me the kindest comments, too.💞

  15. Watching all the Marvel movies is a serious undertaking. I keep thinking it would be cool to watch through them all in order some time, but there are SO MANY OF THEM. It took me a while to realize it, but I really like the Marvel movies. Yes, there are times when the fight scenes go on for too long and I wish there were more talking scenes, but there are so many really great characters. And there’s actually character development sometimes?? I really like all the ones that you mentioned ❤
Your gif response to not meeting the Harry Potter goal is too perfect. I love it 🙂
Dance pictures on top of a parking garage sounds AWESOME. My sisters and I are always taking random pictures of us in interesting/weird places and saying it's for the cover of our next album (not that we have a first album…or a band).
I don't know most of the songs on your playlist, but "I'll Make a Man out of You" is my JAM. I applaud your taste.
Congrats on meeting so many goals! I'm glad you had a good summer 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • Definitely! Ahh, there ARE so many, and I’m pretty sure they’re just going to keep making them. I originally wanted to watch them in order, but quickly realized that if I did that, it would take me years to find them in that exact order due to avaliability at my library and Redbox, etc…so I just ended up watching when I could get them. I am going to watch them in their order though in terms of watching Avengers, then Age of Ultron, then Infinity Wars, then Endgame, if that makes sense, haha.
      Ahh, thank you!
It was so fun! Haha, that’s so fun. Sometimes my friends and I will take a group picture and then realize it looks like our album cover (also for our nonexistent band).
Yes, all the Disney songs forever!
Thank you so much. ❤ I hope you had a wonderful summer too!

  17. you totally earned that ‘read 30 books’ goal. i’m so glad you enjoyed ‘my life next door’ bc that book owns my heart. the family rep, the friendship, the romance, we truly stan. GOODBYE PERFECT WAS SO GOOD, RIGHT?? it totally took me by surprise.
the summer adventures you went on sound like SO MUCH fun (especially having a sleepover on a trampoline, im basic too) and drastic haircuts are literally the most adventurous thing anyone could ever dream of doing lol youre a brave one
i’m so glad to hear you’ve had a great summer 💖

    • Ahh, thank you! (I did end up reading those 1.25 books. 😉 ) OKAY YES, both of those were so good and I’m so happy you loved them because I feel like not a TON of people have read them, but I really wanna scream about them. Those two books were like the epitome of a YA contemporary that I loved. *cries over them forever and ever*
AHAHA, that’s honestly so true. Drastic haircuts are dangerous and probably the most brave thing I ever do because I wouldn’t really call myself a brave person on the daily.😂
Thank you, May! I hope you did too.

  18. I think it’s amazing that you still managed to reach so many of your summer goals, Olivia! You’re amazing! ❤ I really wish I could've had a HP marathon, but I never got to it either! *sigh* Perhaps during Winter break I'll do this! 😉 I hope you enjoy all the remaining Marvel movies! Some of my favorites are all the Captain America movies! I hope your school year has been going well so far! ❤

    • Oh my goodness, thank you so much. You’re the sweetest!❤️Here’s to hoping we both get around to that Harry Potter marathon later in the year, because we both know it will be amazing. 😉 I’m really looking forward to watching Captain America movies, as well as Iron Man too, because I feel like I know them now after watching the Avengers, haha. Thank you so much again, Kelly!!
