7 Books I’m Pretty Sure I’m Going to Love // Five Star Predictions, Wonderings, & A TBR Taller Than Me

Nothing like starting off the new year with high expectations, right?

Okay, that may not be the most common saying ever, but we’re using it today because it’s time to take high expectations for the new year to the next level. Now that we’ve gotten all the it’s-a-new-year-and-a-new-decade posts written and published, I think it’s time to finally partake in a five star predictions post and set some specific reading goals for the next couple of months.

I was inspired for this post by Caitlin (she’s amazing, go stalk her blog right now, please), and when I did a little more research on this I discovered that it’s a thing that a lot of people do. I have to say, it looks like so much fun! I never use TBRs, so this is a new thing I’m trying here.

Blog Title - Design #1 (55)

My hope is to share around five or six or more books on here that I’ve heard good things about and have high expectations for, and then I’ll make an effort over the next few months to read these books. Then I’ll do another post checking in and I’ll be able to see just how accurate my five star predicting abilities are. I’m using my recently cleaned out TBR to write this post (I cleared off 77 books off, are you proud of me?), which makes the whole thing even more exciting.

Without further ado, on to the predicting!

I really just have to say, if I don’t completely fall in love with Call Down the Hawk, by Maggie Stiefvater, I will be very disappointed. So of course this had to be the first book I talked about in this post.

Call Down the Hawk (Dreamer, #1)

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: I have to remind myself that this is not the Raven Cycle, so I’m trying not to base my expectations off that. However, it does have some of the same characters (with the addition of new characters, to my understanding) and that is…exhilarating. Please, please, please let there be Adam/Ronan moments. I already know I’m absolutely obsessed with Maggie Stiefvater’s writing style, and she hasn’t disappointed me yet so- I have high hopes!

If you’re active in the book blogging community and read blogs centered about YA novels, I guarantee you’ve seen Frankly in Love, by David Yoon, and chances are you’ve either read it or it’s on your TBR. Unfortunately, only the latter is true for me, but I hope that changes soon.

Frankly in Love (Frankly in Love, #1)

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: First of all, the synopsis of this book sounds like it’s screaming my name. I love a good YA contemporary romance, and when there’s fake dating involved, of course I’m instantly interested. Secondly, I’ve heard a ton of great things about this from bloggers whose reviews I really trust and usually agree with. Third, look at the cover. You can’t judge a book by its cover…but sometimes it doesn’t hurt at all.

arrow

I’m cheating a little by putting this one on my supposed TBR because I got it for Christmas so if I don’t read it in the next month or so, I’ll be severely disappointed in myself. I’m definitely making things easier for myself by including this one, but it’s worth it because I really am looking forward to A Very Large Expanse of Sea, by Tahereh Mafi.

A Very Large Expanse of Sea

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: This book just looks so good! Not only have I seen people praise it (thank you, Goodreads reviews for naturally sorting my friends’ reviews to the top of the review section, I really appreciate this detail), but it genuinely sounds like a captivating story. I have not read enough books with a Muslim protagonist, so I’m looking forward to it! Overall, this book sounds like it’s a recipe for five stars, so that’s what I’m predicting.

arrow

Unless you are living beneath a slight rock (well, that sounds mean, maybe just a little pebble) or are new to book blogging, it’s pretty likely you’ve heard of The Boy Who Steals Houses or about the books C.G. Drews has written. I would say they’ve made a big splash in the blogging world, and rightfully so!

The Boy Who Steals Houses

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: I genuinely loved C.G. Drews’s debut novel, A Thousand Perfect Notes, so I have no reason to assume I won’t love this one just as much. The synopsis sounds amazing, there are Hufflepuff vibes and siblings and family dynamics and love of all kinds and it just sounds SO nice and cozy and like the ultimate Olivia Book™. The only thing keeping me from having already read this is the fact that acquiring it requires ordering it online, and I always forget to do that.

arrow

Oh look, I’m semi-cheating again by putting another book on here that I also got for Christmas. Ladies and gentlemen (pun intended), I’m finally going to read The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, by Mackenzi Lee. Cue the applause because I’m like two years late to this hype.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Montague Siblings, #1)

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: I just feel like this book has everything I could want in a novel. I’ve been really wanting some historical fiction YA novels ever since I fell in love with My Lady Jane, and honestly, with characters named Monty and Percy, what could go wrong. The adventure plot sounds so grand and something that’s going to keep me entertained and just be !!different!! from all the YA contemporaries I’m always reading. Not to mention there’s a lot of hype surrounding this book for me.

arrow

I feel like I’ve been wanting to read this book for forever now, I just never actually take initiative, put a hold on it at the library, use a gift card to buy it, or do anything that would ensure I actually read it. So this is me reminding myself that it’s going to be amazing (I think) and I need to read You Asked For Perfect, by Laura Silverman.

You Asked for Perfect

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: Just by the synopsis, I can already tell the chances of me enjoying this book are extremely high. I also think the messages about school and the stress it puts on students will resonate with me, and I’m more likely to rate a book higher if I feel connected and passionate about the issues the story talks about- which I do. Plus, it looks like there’s going to be a soft romance that I’m pretty sure I will be 100% be behind. Basically, I have a feeling this book will live up to its cover.

arrow

Olivia is putting a fantasy book on her list and she thinks she will give it five stars? What universe are we in right now? Oh, yes, of course- the one where she adored Six of Crows and now can’t wait to give Shadow and Bone, by Leigh Bardugo, a chance as well. Is it smart or absolutely dumb of me to read this after reading SOC, someone help.

Shadow and Bone (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #1)

Why I Think It Will Get Five Stars: I’m basing this off the fact that I had such an amazing experience reading Six of Crows, also by Leigh Bardugo. I think if I enjoyed her world-building and complex characters so much there, the chances are high of me enjoying them here. Also, one of my friends IRL recommended this to me before even knowing I had read any books by the author and it made me very happy. I put great stock in the opinions of all my online friends/blog reviews, but it was also gratifying to hear her tell me she enjoyed it, and gave me high hopes!

arrow

That concludes my five star predictions- I want to do this more often because I had such a wonderful time writing this post. I don’t know why, but it made me feel so relaxed and it was almost therapeutic to go through my TBR, pick out books I think I’ll enjoy, and then write about why I think I’ll love them. Almost as therapeutic as actually reading them!

The plan is to do a follow-up post in March or April and update you all on what I actually ended up thinking about all these books. I wish I could do it sooner, but since a) I’m a mood reader, b) I don’t have access to all these books at the drop of a hat, and c) I’ll be busy with school and dance, that wouldn’t be feasible.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a marvelous week! Here’s to starting off 2020 with high expectations and to hopefully meeting them.✨

Have you read any of these? What did you think of them, if you have? If you haven’t, do you want to read them too? Tell me how your day is going! I’d love to talk with you in the comments.

  1. I’ve read all of these except for Shadow and Bone!! The only one I didn’t love was Expanse of Sea or whatever the full title is. However, I binge-read it and for me binge reads either turn out really well or really… not well.

CALL DOWN THE HAWK AGH. My poor heart. Adam/Ronan content definitely exists but it’s not a prominent feature like TRC – but it does set up lots of content for the next book…. You will love it and all the magic and dreaming and poor boys in love.

You Asked For Perfect was amazing! As someone who definitely feels academic pressure (only from myself 🙂 ) I felt the rep was really good??? And the romance was perfection!!!

Houses seems like a very Olivia Book so have fun!! All the siblings gave me a bit of a Raven Cycle vibe in the tight-knit, I’m-going-to-wrestle-you-and-you’ll-still-love-me-of-course way 🙂 Lovely post!! xx

    • That’s so exciting!! Sometimes I just get overwhelmed by the fact that people exist who actually also read YA books and I get to talk to them?? Mind blown. 😉 I’ve actually started A Very Large Expanse of Sea since writing this post, and so far I like it, but I keep getting distracted and going back to The Raven Cycle, haha. I know what you mean about binge reads. Most of the time I can’t even remember what they were about, much less form a coherent opinion?

My heart is happy just thinking about it! Aww, I’m so happy to hear that. I don’t need or expect a lot of Adam/Ronan content, since I know that’s not what it’s about, but I’m very excited to hear there is a *little* because of course I love my babies so much. *cries*

That’s great to hear! I definitely feel that self-induced academic pressure as well! I’m very much looking forward to it. I’ve only ever read about it with Radio Silence so far.

I actually remember reading your review of TBWSH a while ago and ADORING everything you said- so thank you for inspiring me to want to read it!! Aww, I love that it’s an Olivia Book. Thank you so much, Rhi! I loved this comment dearly. ❤

  2. I’m so glad you enjoyed writing this post, Olivia – because I loved reading it, haha! ☺️ I truly hope all of these books will live up to your expectations; they all sound so good! I’ve read The Gentleman’s Guide and You Asked for Perfect, and I can confirm that they’re both wonderful books 😍 The Gentleman’s Guide was so entertaining and a read I couldn’t put down (I just love Monty and Percy, haha) and You Asked for Perfect was just so relatable and emotional (not to mention, the romance was cute af hehe). Anyway, I’ll end my long comment by saying that I hope your 2020 will be filled with amazing books and happiness 💕 wishing you the best for the new year!

    • Aww, thank you, Dezzy- it’s so nice to hear from you! I hope you’re doing well, it made me very happy to read this comment. How has your year been?✨💓I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed a couple of these! I can’t wait to get to know Monty and Percy because they sound adorable and the plot in general sounds like exactly the kind of adventure I love. (I love a good historical fiction fantasy. XD) Thank you again, and happy new year to you as well. I wish you all the books and accomplishing of goals and happiness in 2020!

  3. 5 star predictions are always so fun. I can’t wait to see what you think of all of these! I really enjoyed both the Gentleman’s Guide and A Very Large Expanse of Sea. I hope you will too 🙂

  4. I loved this post so much!! I love seeing people’s 5 star predictions (I loved Caitlin’s post too 😂)!!
It is such a great feeling when you clear out your TBR– it is so satisfying. Well done on clearing 77 books out, that’s impressive!!
I don’t want to build up CDTH too much but I think because you love the characters and Maggie’s writing, that you will love it. It has more magic and a different feel from TRC but definitely had the same underlying things that I loved about TRC (and it’s very Maggie)!!
I am going to try to read A Large Expanse of Sea, You Asked for Perfect and Gentlemen’s Guide this year and I have very high hopes for them too!! Hopefully we will both love them all!!
I hope you love The Boy Who Steals Houses as it does have a great family dynamic!!
I read Shadow and Bone after Six of Crows too!! Yay!! Unfortunately it didn’t leave up to SoC for me, it felt more generic but it had a lot of good things to offer and David is one of my favourite secondary characters ever!! I hope you love it more than I did!!
Happy reading!! I can’t wait to see your thoughts on all of these!! ❤

    • Thank you!! Ahh, yes, I loved Caitlin’s post so much (as well as the rest of her blog, she’s just all-around amazing 😉 ).
Haha, thank you! I feel so much lighter now knowing that I actually want to read all the books that are on my TBR.
I’m glad to hear that! I’m trying so hard not to make my expectations impossible to meet. I’m trying to focus more on the “I love Maggie’s writing and that’s what I’m looking forward to” rather than “I want to see the characters again” so I don’t disappoint myself if certain characters aren’t as prominent.
I hope we love them! They all seem really great. I’m almost done with my reread of TRK and then I’m itching to get started with A Gentleman’s Guide!
Yay- I hope I do too. XD
Aww, I’m sorry to hear it disappointed you! I have heard that SOC is stronger, which does make me a little apprehensive, but then again, SOC is like a 10/5 stars for me, so maybe this will still be 5/5, haha.
Thank you so, so much! This comment was so lovely. Happy reading!💖

  5. Although I read a lot, I’m kinda new to the book blogging community so I haven’t actually heard of any of these books before 🙈 but they sound interesting! I have a (very long) to be read list on my computer and I’ll probably be adding a couple of these to it 💛

    • I’m SO glad to hear that!! I’ve definitely been looking forward to both of those. Ahh, now I’m even more hyped. 😉

Yes, for sure, TBWSH looks so so cute and it’s been on my TBR for so long that I just really hope I can actually read it soon. Thank you so much, Ash!💞

  7. I really don’t want to be negative or annoying, but if you LOVED Six of Crows, I doubt you’ll love Shadow & Bone as much. The Six of Crows duology is such a big step up for Leigh Bardugo, especially when it comes to making her characters more engaging and interesting.

    • Aww, no, I’m sorry to hear that! I have heard that before, so it’s lowered my expectations a bit. Thanks for the heads up, hopefully I’ll still enjoy it though, even if it’s not as good as Six of Crows was!❤️

  8. Oh my gosh, Gentleman’s Guide, yay!!! I hope you do love it! And Taherah Mafi’s book is great, too!!! I’ve only read the first Raven Boys book but someday I hope to finish the series and read Call Down the Hawk.

    • Thank you, Elizabeth!! I’m really looking forward to both of those, so I’m happy to see you enjoyed them- we have pretty similar reading tastes for sure. 😉 Ahh, I hope you do!! But it’s one of my favorites ever so of course I’m biased. XD

  9. Omg, yay, Olivia, I’m so glad that my post inspired you!! It’s so fun to watch people do these TBRs! And the stuff you said about me is gonna make me cry 😭💕 told myself that I wasn’t gonna read The Raven Cycle anymore because I know too much about the ending (even though I don’t know how it actually ends), but I have forgotten most of the spoilers I know by now, and I think it’s time to read the series really late to the hype train, especially because I’ve heard amazing things about Call Down the Hawk!

I told myself that I wasn’t gonna read The Raven Cycle anymore because I know too much about the ending (even though I don’t know how it actually ends), but I have forgotten most of the spoilers I know by now, and I think it’s time to read the series really late to the hype train, especially because I’ve heard amazing things about Call Down the Hawk!

I read a few pages from Frankly in Love a while ago, and I had so much fun reading it! The writing is pretty John Green-y (I’m saying this having never read a John Green book, and only from what I’ve heard about his books lmao). The teenage male protagonist has a very distinct voice that may be a little annoying to some, but I personally liked it. And of course, the own voices Asian rep stole my heart ❤ I've also read a few pages from A Very Large Expanse of Sea, and it definitely wasn't an easy read. The Islamophobia that the main character goes through in just one chapter was shocking, and you can tell that Tahereh Mafi has had personal experience with it.

I can't wait to read a novel by C.G. Drews!! Cait's blog post and social media presence is unmatched, and I want to read her books so badly! I've heard nothing but amazing things about TBWSH, and I hope we both love it ❤ ❤ I'm also going to read Shadow & Bone like, five years late this year in preparation for future Grisha novels, and I can't wait!! From the bottom of my heart, I hope you 5-star all of this ❤❤ Great post as always 💕💕

    • Thank you again for the inspiration!! I seriously had such a good time writing this post and I’m going to make this a more usual thing on my blog, it was amazing. AS ARE YOU.💓

Omg wait that’s so sad the ending of TRC got spoiled for you?? I didn’t know anything going into it, which definitely made for a unique reading experience with it. I still really do think you would like it, though!! The plot can be a little hard to get into, but the characters are honestly the BEST. I…can’t explain how much I love them. Plus, yes, then you can read CDTH! I mean, you could read CDTH first, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it, as it would completely spoil a lotttt about TRC.

I’m super glad to hear you liked Frankly in Love, or what you’ve read of it so far! Okay, wait, you should read some John Green. I know you’re a fantasy lover at heart, but I promise he’s super good! I think his two best novels are Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines, in case you wanted to know what to start with. 😉 (The Fault in Our Stars is good too, but it wasn’t my favorite of his books.) Yes, from the little I’ve read of A Large Expanse, it definitely is! It’s so so important though, and I’m so glad books like it exist.

I hope you love TBSH too! ATPN was honestly amazing, and I would highly recommend it. I can’t wait to read Shadow and Bone either- I also want to read it due to the Netflix series that I think it coming out about it?? I think it’s combining S&B and SOC, so definitely need the background. Thank you so, so much!! You’re the best and I loved this comment.✨

  10. 5 star predictions TBRs are certainly one of my favorites to make too! they can be a lot of fun and i want to have one for the new year, but i’m still hesitant, since my results for last year weren’t exactly the best. out of the five books, only two turned out to be actual five stars, so it was a bit of a shame, but i still think it’s a nice exercise as it definitely challenges you to *really* look into your buzzwords and how well you’re aware of your own taste, which can be hard.
i have read a very large expanse of sea and it was a really wonderful experience. i think if you enjoy romance, you’ll really enjoy this one, because the relationship was *chef’s kiss*.
i really hope you love the gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue, as it is one of my favorite books. i re-read it last year and it was such an amazing experience. it’s a really funny and almost over the top book, but there are some really good heart-felt moments as well.
the boy who steals houses is on my TBR for the new year too and i predict it will be a 5 stars as well. this book checks so many of my boxes and i’m ready to cry, hahah.

    • They’re so fun!! Aww, I’m sorry to hear about your last five star predictions. I hope if you do any in the future, they impress you more!💗That’s so true, I guess this will be very telling as to if I’m aware of my book taste or if I just go with the hype. XD
I love a good romance, especially in YA contemporary, so YAY, that makes me so happy to hear! I also can’t wait for the adventure and hilarity of The Gentleman’s Guide- oh, wow, I’m just so hyped for it. Wishing you all the happiest of reading and five star books this year!!☺️

  11. I follow Paper Fury and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to get around to putting her books on my TBR!! Hoping that this year, I read both A Thousand Perfect Notes and The Boy Who Steals Houses. Looking forward to reading Shadow and Bone this year as well! I’ve heard it’s not as good as SoC/CK and that seems to be the general consensus from the bloggers I follow, but I really, really, really want to like it! Hope you do xxx

    • The one I’ve read so far was amazing! I first discovered it by reading Paper Fury, but personally I feel as if at this point her books should be bestselling, and I won’t stop talking about them. 😉 I hope you enjoy all of these books! Yes, I’ve heard the same about Shadow and Bone vs. SOC~ but I’m the same as you, I just really want to love it. Happy reading, and thank you so much for this comment, Macey!

  12. I feel the same way about Call Down the Hawk! I’m nervous to pick it up, but at the same time, every time I’m in a bookstore I find myself drawn to it. Hopefully I’ll love it! But I was so happy to see how many books on this list I’ve LOVED! A Very Large Expanse of Sea is one of the only books that I’ve read in one sitting. It’s fantastic! And I’ve shouted about my love for You Asked For Perfect ever since I read it! I loved it for the very reasons you mentioned. I related so hard to the stress and struggles Ariel has because of school. I can’t wait to see how you feel about all of these books! I hope you love them!

    • Exactly?? There are so many expectations surrounding it, I keep trying to calm myself down so I don’t get disappointed. I hope we both end up loving it!! I’m so, so glad to hear that you enjoyed A Very Large Expanse of Sea and You Asked for Perfect- both of those are ones I’m very much looking forward to reading, and I can only hope I enjoy them as much as you have. Thank you for this comment!! It’s so, so nice to hear from you and I got so excited when I saw this. I hope you and Chana are doing well!!💗

  14. Ahh I love this post, Olivia! ❤ I adored C.G. Drew's A Thousand Perfect Notes, so I'm sure I'll be a huge fan of The Boy Who Steals Houses when I read it! I actually bought it all those months ago when it released, but still haven't read it yet!! I have unrealistically high expectations for Call Down the Hawk and have been so nervous that it might not be sheer perfection, that I've procrastinated reading it lol! I can't wait to see what you think of all these books! ❤

    • Thank you, Kelly!💓Same with me- ATPN stole my heart, so I can’t imagine TBWSH doing anything but breaking it into more little tiny pieces. (I love doing that to myself, thanks books!) I haven’t exactly been procrastinating with CDTH (it hasn’t been available at my library yet), but I definitely have the same high expectations. I’m nervous, but my excitement wins out. 😉 Thank you so much! I’m looking forward to doing an update post.
