We made it to the halfway point of 2020, and that in itself is a success.
As much as I wish this year had turned out much differently than it has so far, since we have to work with what we got, I’m very grateful that it’s already June. After this month is over, we will have made it through half of 2020, and I really just want this year to be over!! Preferably like right now but unfortunately that’s not how it works.
I do have to admit that at least for me, months after March have been going by moderately quickly, which is something I’m very grateful for. May passed in a series of walks, bike rides, online school and tests, zoom dance classes, and nights spent up late reading. I can only hope June will pass in the same way.
Despite me neglecting my blog this past month (I know, I’m disappointed in myself too), I still wanted to do a wrap-up post about what I read, what I did while being in quarantine, and the zero that I blogged, because it just seems like the right way to start off a new month!
To start off with some good news, I read books in May!!
I started out the month in somewhat of reading slump that came about both by having a lack of books to read and because I was reading a book that took me forever to get through and made me not want to read. Thankfully, about halfway through the month I discovered that my library started doing curbside pickup, so I was able to get some new books and that ended up ending my slump.
I think my favorites of the month were A Very Large Expanse of Sea and A Quiet Kind of Thunder! This surprises me because I wasn’t feeling the contemporaries this month, but those two are definitely going on the favorites list.
I realize that in last month’s recap, I talked about doing mini reviews of the books I read in April, and yet I never did (due to the fact that I didn’t post at all in May). I’m not making any promises because clearly I can’t stand by them, but I’m hoping to do a collective April-May mini reviews post during June!
How I Did On May’s Reading Goals✨
- Read 10 books ✅
- Read a classic ✅ I started a reread of P&P so I am counting this!!
- Write at least one review on Goodreads ❌
- Finish Anna Karenina ❌ I made zero progress. I disappoint myself.
June’s Reading Goals✨
- Read 15 books
- Read 2 classics
- Start a reread of Harry Potter
- Post 5 times on bookstagram & stay active there
Look at me, abandoning my blog once again. I would say I’m surprised, but I’m more just disappointed in myself. I spent the month in quarantine, yet somehow I didn’t publish a single blog post besides my April recap?
The only thing that makes me a little less mad at myself is that I know my lack of posts was due to a lack of inspiration. I was fairly active on WordPress, or at least I tried to comment on a good amount of posts and stay up to date on comments and my Reader, I just didn’t have the proper inspiration to actually write posts. I started like six but couldn’t finish any of them.
The good thing is, I’m feeling a lot more inspired now!! I’ve been tagged for a few tags that I really want to participate in, I have my mini-reviews that I need to write, a collab I’m looking forward to, and I want to share some book recommendations this month too. Now that I feel like my blogging motivation is back, I hope June can be a lot more productive than May was!
Despite me not being the *most* active, I still bookmarked some posts this month that I loved, so if you’re in need of some amazing reading material, I have you covered.
- May created a Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus book tag and it’s seriously amazing, and the perfect way to celebrate the TV adaptation announcement!! I can’t wait to participate in it myself.
- Ash shared 12 Middle Grade book recommendations and they’re perfect for reading during quarantine, and better yet, they are all by Asian authors!
- Margaret shared all her thoughts about the Percy Jackson adaptation and I couldn’t relate more to everything she said about it
- Chana talked all about why you should read book blogs, and as a book blogger, I absolutely agree with all of it!!
- Marie gave underrated contemporary recommendations based on popular contemporaries, and her recommendations are nothing but golden
- Sophie listed out all the small tropes she loves in books and it made me rethink my whole existence, aka realize I have a love for many of these as well!
- Annie wrote the most insightful post about retrospectiveness that had me thinking rethinking history
- Lila shared fantasy recommendations for people new to the genre, and I got so many amazing recommendations from it!
I slacked off on my blog hopping near the end of the month, and these are definitely not the only amazing posts I read- so if you wrote or read a post you especially loved this month, please don’t hesitate to leave the link in the comments so I can read it!
How I Did on May’s Blogging Goals✨
- Post four times ❌when I didn’t…post even once…
- Keep track of posts I loved ✅
- Work on blogging redesign ❌
- Comment on posts regularly ❌✅
- Respond to comments within a week ❌I tried!!
- Do a tag ❌
- Do a discussion post ❌
- Mini reviews ❌
June’s Blogging Goals✨
- Post at least 6 times
- Establish blogging schedule for summer
- Tags!! (I have two in mind)
- Actually do those mini reviews
- Revamp my friends page
- Interact consistently and keep track of posts I enjoyed
I don’t know how to feel about May. I think a lot of small, positive things happened in my life throughout the month, but there were definitely still difficult things occurring both in my personal life, but especially in the world as a whole.
Not only are we still facing the effects of COVID-19, but protests, police brutality, and riots are happening all over the United States right now. It’s horrifying to see the continued racism in my country and worldwide, and I don’t feel like I have the right words for the situation, but I urge you to do whatever you can- you can sign petitions, text and call, and show your support to protestors. [resource for petitions, numbers to call, and articles to educate yourself with here]
I will be doing what I can to take action, speak out, and call for love, equality, and justice over hate, oppression, and injustice. 🤍
It unsettles me that despite protests erupting in major cities across the United States, despite blatant displays of racism still happening all the time, despite a global pandemic still impacting our lives, I’m sitting here writing a blog post. I write this post, talking about the books I read and things I did during the month, not to ignore or put the horrible things happening right now second to my personal agenda, but rather as a way to hopefully spread positivity and light to someone right now, even if it’s just by the smallest amount. So, in that spirit of spreading positivity, here are a few things that I did in May~
- I had a zoom dance recital! I know, a zoom recital. Who would have thought? Either way, it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. It was fun to wear our costumes and do makeup for it, even if I was dancing to a computer screen in my game room.
- Social distancing walks have been my go-to. We aren’t on lockdown anymore where I live, though social distancing has still been encouraged, so I’ve been going on a lot of walks with my friends as a way to connect. One of us will walk on the sidewalk and the other on the street in our neighborhoods, so that we’re maintaining a distance while still being able to talk.
- I don’t think I ever stop listening to music. I have always loved music, but quarantine has made me even more of a music fanatic. Songs on my playlist for May 2020 include~
🎵I Don’t Wanna Live Forever, Taylor Swift & Zayn // California Dreamin’, Sia (I want to do a jazz dance to this so bad) // Mean It, Lauv // pink skies, LANY (my song for the summer) // Paris in the Rain, Lauv // Dear Winter, AJR (the lyrics on this one are perfection)🎵
I think I’ve discovered my music taste is soft pop? I’m not sure, because I like a lot of different types of music, but lately that’s what I’ve been going for. Please give me all the song or artist recommendations if you have any, because I’m always up for listening to new music!
- It’s summer now! This doesn’t feel that different than the past two months, but online school is officially over, almost all my AP exams are over (I have to redo one of them that didn’t submit, but other than that, I’m done), and it’s…summer? Since everything is so weird, it’s hard to know what to do with that information, but I’m still excited nonetheless.
That’s the majority of my May- I’m relieved it’s over and to see what June holds. I get to go back into my dance studio starting in June, which is quite possibly the most exciting news I’ve heard in months, and even though it won’t be “normal,” I’m grateful for the safety regulations being put into place and I’m looking forward to being able to dance full-out again, for at least some sense of normalcy.
I hope this next month holds reading, blogging, and most importantly, change for our world. I’m thinking of each one of you and I hope you are all staying as safe as possible. Sending you positivity and love, and thank you for reading this post! xx I hope you have the best June possible.
How was your June? I would love to talk to all of you in the comments about your month.

hi!! you’re back!! i missed you!! love you!!!
i never have any music recommendations because i listen to the weirdest mix of things!! i too have been listening to so much more though – maybe it’s a stuck at home thing?
please!! only come back when you feel up to it!! don’t feel pressured to post or interact or have anything to do with us 🙂 we’re not going anywhere. i was th opposite in terms of content creating, however – somehow i got a total of 7 posts written in a week? my june posts are coming!! it really shows how we all cope with things differently.
how are you going? i hope you’re doing well friend, and it’s lovely to chat again. i’m here if you ever want to talk!! or, alternatively, fangirl about TRC 😉 xx

Hi Rhi!! I’ve missed you too, love YOU!🥺
I feel that?? Sometimes I just don’t understand my music taste. But I am completely down to listen to any weird mix of things if you ever feel compelled to share. ;)) You’re right, I think it is a stuck at home thing!
Aww, thank you so much, that genuinely means the world to me!! I’m feeling more inspired now so that’s good. Wow, I’m so happy and proud of you for all your blogging productivity!! That’s so so amazing!!
You’re the kindest ever, thank you, oh my goodness. I’m doing all right, I thankfully am going back to dance today so I think that’s going to be really good for my mental and physical health!! How are you??💛xx

I’ll never get tired of seeing a new post from you in my Reader, Olivia! I’m really sorry you didn’t put out as many posts in May as you would’ve liked. I can relate, haha. Even though I posted four times, I’ve been meaning to post so much more for literal months. weirdly, quarantine has sucked out my motivation to blog, not boosted it? It’s weird, but hopefully we can be more present in June. (At least you were able to keep up with comments and blog posts 🥺 I have this bad habit of letting comments and blog posts from other people pile up, yikes.)
It was so fun to read about your life in May! Congrats on completing a dance recital through Zoom. I’m so happy you loved A Very Large Expanse of Sea too! I’ve been meaning to read that book since forever, and I wasn’t able to read it during Asian Heritage Month :”)
Hope you have a great summer, Olivia ❤

Don’t mind me over here crying…you’re the sweetest to me Caitlin, thank you!😭💓I’m there with you on quarantine taking my motivation instead of giving me more. I think it’s made it easy for me to think “oh, I have so much time, so I don’t need to do it now” and then I never end up actually doing it? But I’m glad you were still able to publish posts, that’s amazing, and yes, here’s to both of us being more active in the coming month!
Thank you so much! The Zoom dance recital was certainly an adventure, haha. Ahh, I had been wanting to read AVLEOS for forever and it lived up to my expectations so I hope it lives up to yours too. xx Thank you for this very, very much appreciated comment and for always being so positive and kind to me!! I hope you have the best June and are doing well!

I love Dear Winter by AJR!! also i’m listening to Pink Skies by LANY and i love it!! I think you’d really like Troye Sivan if you like soft pop. His album BLOOM is a good place to start!!! ALSO I’M ANXIOUS ABOUT WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF ASTONISHING COLOUR. But I’m glad you liked A Very Large Expanse of Sea it was such an enjoyable read! I hope you have an amazing June ❤ ❤

Dear Winter is so cute! My sister played it for me a couple weeks ago and I have had it on repeat since then. Ahh, thank you so much for the recommendation! I’ve definitely heard about Troye Sivan but I’ve never actually listened, however, I will be listening now. (: Eep I liked it!! This solidifies it, I will for sure include it in mini reviews this month. Thank you so much, Ilsa! I hope you’re doing well and also have a wonderfull June xx 💛

Aaaah, I love AJR!! They’re one of my favorite bands, and Dear Winter is just so freaking cute! Yayy for reading books! I also loved A Very Large Expanse of Sea, it’s such a fantastic book. I totally get what you’re saying about not having inspiration/motivation to blog. Even though it feels like I should have a lot more time to do so now, since I’m anyways on the computer all the time, it’s hard! I also love every post I see from you Olivia, and whenever you’re back in the blogging mood I can’t wait to see what you post 💕💕
Thank you for sharing my post! I’m so happy you liked it 🥰 I hope you have a fantastic June!

I need to listen to more AJR! I also like their song Bang! but that’s all I know. I’m happy to hear you loved AVLEOS because it was so powerful and also managed to steal my heart. Ahh, while I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one, I wish you all the best with getting the motivation for blogging!! It’s definitely weird, maybe it’s because we’re already on the computer so much now. Either way, thank you so much, that means so much to me!💗
I loved it! Your (and Malka’s) posts are always amazing. Thank you again, and I hope you have a wonderful June! xx

This was a wonderful post! Thank you for using your platform as a book blogger to raise awareness for the Black Lives Matter movement. What’s happening in America right now is disgusting, and all of us are responsible for contributing to BLM and striving for change. As bloggers, writing is one of the most impactful ways we can call for societal change, and I hope the rest of the blogging community contributes as well.

I’m sorry you didn’t get to blog as much as you wanted this month but when you aren’t feeling it there is nothing worse than forcing yourself to do it so I think it is good to wait until you are inspired. I obviously missed your posts though !!
Dear Winter is such a great song, I love it I quite like soft pop as well like Conan Gray songs and I love Happy and Immortal by Marina as well !!

It’s the cutest! Ohh, my friend has been getting me to listen to more Conan Gray and I’ve been enjoying it, I think I’ve only listened to his more well-known songs so far, but I really like Crush Culture! I’ll give Happy and Immortal a listen, thank you for the recommendation.

Denial aside, I’m glad you had a good May overall! So happy you got to have a dance recital even if it was virtual. 😐 Also, I will definitely be adding A Quiet Kind of Thunder to my summer TBR list! I believe it features deafness or Deaf characters (?), and since I took ASL last year, I’m excited to see what I think. 🙂

Thank you so much! Ah yes, the virtual dance recital will…not be forgotten? It was memorable to say the least.🙃 I really hope you love A Quiet Kind of Thunder, I know I did! Yes, one of the main characters is deaf- he and the other main character mostly communicate using BSL. I’m not sure how similar it is to ASL, but I hope you enjoy and that’s so cool you took ASL! Happy reading, Charis. xx

Hello Olivia!
That’s awesome that you’ve read 10 books this month and found some new favourites. I also fall into reading slumps when I’m stuck in the middle of a book that I’m not eager to continue reading, but I’m glad to hear that you’ve conquered the slump 🙂
There are definitely a lot of terrible things happening right now, but I think it’s great that you are taking care of yourself and doing things you love. It can be tough out there in the world and I think it is important for us to empathize with those who are suffering, but I don’t think this means we should be sad all the time. I think there is no shame in doing what you enjoy 🙂
Cheers! Here’s to a wonderful June!

Hi, Sophie!
Thank you so much! Discovering new favorites is the best feeling- and yes, I completely agree that reading slumps are so prevalent when I’m not interested in a book.
You put that into words so well! I hope you’re continuing to take care of yourself, doing what you love, and having a wonderful month so far.💗Thank you so much for all the kind words!

Hope June is treating you well so far & looking forward to the blog posts you have planned! 💛

I really appreciate that you keep bringing up the protests, Black Lives Matter, and the movement in your posts, Olivia. Have there been any instagram accounts, videos, or posts that have been the most impactful to you? My friends have actually been talking about topics relating to this quite constantly this past week or two. It’s been interesting because not all of us necessarily agree on everything (actually, we definitely don’t), and it’s really forced me to consider what I belive because much of what I argue won’t be taken for granted by my friends. It’s made me have to do more research on my own, which I appreciate.
A zoom concert, wow! How did it go??
AHH, Lauv!! Jonathan introduced me to his music this year, and I really like the sound of his songs. I keep getting excited every time I see somebody mentioned him even though he’s very well-known. I haven’t gotten into LANY yet, but they did pop up on my release radar for their new song.
And thank you so much for thinking of my post :))

It’s the least I can do- and yes, I can think of one off the top of my head. It was an IGTV video on Instagram by @themanacho and it’s called “Dear White People.” Another IGTV I found eye-opening was one called “If you are white, please watch” by @vanessagrimaldi30. What about you? And yes, my friends and I (and my family) have been having a lot of conversations too. I think these conversations are hard to have, but incredibly vital. I’ve been trying to educate myself as much as possible too!
Ahh, thank you for asking. :)) The zoom recital was pretty good? There was only one dance that I sort of forgot while in the midst of the recital, but other than that it was all good. It was definitely weird and I’m glad it’s over, but I do appreciate my studio still giving us the opportunity to dance and perform as much as possible.
I love Lauv! I haven’t listened to a lot of his songs yet, but there are quite a few that I have on repeat a lot. No, I totally get that feeling of being excited when someone mentions an artist or song or book or author or really anyone or anything that I like. It’s like an instant connection and I get so excited that I’m not alone in my love for fill in the blank. Ohh, I really like LANY too, and they kind of give me the same vibes as Lauv- but that could definitely just be me, haha.
Of course! I love your posts always.

Thank you, May! Aww, I’m so sorry about that, and I hope your cough gets better soon and you can go soon. It’s definitely strange that we have to dance in our own little boxes or go across the floor by ourselves all the time, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to go. Thank you again, and you too!
