My Travels in Nashville, TN!! // ft. lots of history, taylor swift fangirling, & murals

I love traveling.

My love for traveling isn’t something I talk about often on my blog because a) I don’t travel consistently and b) I don’t usually post about things besides books. But today I’m excited to be interrupting my regularly scheduled bookish programming to bring to you my very first travel-related post! I guess I could try to tie in books to this post, but yeah, that wouldn’t work.

Blog Title - Design #1 (42)

In July, I was lucky enough to be able to take a road trip with my parents to the great city of Nashville, Tennessee. We went for the purpose of touring colleges, but in the two and a half days we spent there, ended up hearing a lot of great music, seeing the sights, and eating a lot of good food.

I tried to take as many pictures as possible because I knew I wanted to document our trip in a blog post! All the pictures in this post were taken by my not so professional phone camera unless otherwise specified. 😉

Without further ado, let’s go to Nashville!

It’s about a ten hour drive, give or take, from my house to Nashville, and while I love road trips, ten hours is especially long?? and most of the time the view was just trees.

Thankfully, I don’t get carsick so I was able to read, watch Queer Eye, and listen to music! We also stopped in Memphis on the way, and went to a well-known barbeque restaurant as well as saw the location of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and the National Civil Rights Museum, which is at the same spot.

IMG_3052IMG_7676

Even though the motel where MLK Jr. was assassinated was two seconds off a major road, even though it was so hot and there were tourists and locals and cars everywhere, there was something so powerful about seeing the memorial to him.

It was one of those moments where I realized that an event in history, which seemed so far off and disconnected from me and my life when I learned about it in school or read about it in a book, was real and made such an impact.

If you ever get the chance to visit Memphis, I highly recommend stopping here! We didn’t get to go in the museum, but if I go back, I’m definitely going there. We almost didn’t stop but I’m so glad we did.

Nashville being known as Music City, one of the major attractions is called Broadway. It’s a street in downtown Nashville that consists of a lot of bars, honky tonks, gift shops, a few restaurants, and tons of live music.

IMG_2174IMG_1053

We went there twice during our trip- once the first night we got there, and once the next day. Obviously, I’m a minor and have no interest in going in bars anyway so I had a lot more fun the second time we went because it was in the afternoon and the environment was way less intense.

They do have bars that are family-friendly, although most don’t let minors in after 6 pm! The second picture was taken from the rooftop of Blake Shelton’s bar, which was probably my favorite spot we went to there because it was so pretty to see the whole street, as well as part of Nashville’s skyline, from so high up!

If you’re a fan of country music or even just music in general, walking along Broadway is a great experience because literally every bar has a different artist or band performing. Singing on Broadway is how so many stars got started, so I kept thinking, “maybe this person is the next Taylor Swift and we don’t even know it.”

IMG_6210

At the edge of the street, there was a mural of country music legends. This is kind of an odd photo of it, but y’all- Taylor Swift was on it!! I kind of completely freaked out when I saw that because I didn’t know the country music community still acknowledged her roots in country music. And yes I definitely took a picture with her because why would I not.

IMG_6214

Since we were on Broadway pretty late and I basically couldn’t go into any of the bars, we stopped in this record/CD store. I thought this picture summed up the old-timey, country music star vibe it had going on. XD

Also, I just need to acknowledge the fact that I have never seen so many cowboy boot stores in my life. Like, yes, I have Boot Barns where I live because some people there are Country™, but this was insane. There were probably four or five boot shops on this single block??

All of them had a buy one get two free sale, which was hilarious because I remembered the same sale from the last time I was in Nashville, which was six years ago. One pair cost about three hundred dollars though, so I can see why there’s a sale.

IMG_6155

To end this section about Broadway, this is a panorama I took from a rooftop bar! Overall, I would definitely recommend visiting Broadway if you go to Nashville. It’s a really iconic street and it embodies the country music spirit that everyone expects to find in this city.

Just remember to go before evening if you’re a minor and of course take a picture with the mural of Taylor Swift. 😉

The second part of this post is dedicated to miscellaneous adventures we had in Nashville! Some of these were planned and some just happened in a spur of the moment kind of way. Is it just me, or are spur of the moment adventures the best ever.

Our first adventure was going to the Country Music Hall of Fame!

IMG_0573

I went here on my first trip six years ago, but I didn’t remember any of the exhibits so we decided to tour it again. Honestly, even if you’re not that big of a country music fan, I still recommend visiting this museum!

I probably didn’t know three-quarters of the legends that were in here, but I loved it nonetheless. They had tons of clothes and instruments that belonged to really famous country music stars, both past and present, and had things like Elvis Presley’s car and the car in Smokey and the Bandit.

IMG_2731

Even though I wasn’t an avid fan of most people whose belongings were in the museum, I still got the feeling of, wow, these people are famous and they lived and they owned this *insert possession*, and it’s amazing that it’s right in front of me.

IMG_7699IMG_7443

I continued to freak out when I saw how much Taylor Swift stuff they had in the museum! I really wasn’t expecting there to be anything about her, but there was the dress she wore in the Love Story music video, as well as her iconic silver guitar.

There was a whole exhibit about songwriting, and it had some of her outfits from the Reputation era! I don’t have a picture of it here, but there was also the cat head she wore in the Look What You Made Me Do video. Can you imagine how much I was fangirling at this point?? Now multiply that by a hundred and you’re where I was.

I didn’t expect The Country Music Hall of Fame to be as awesome of an experience as it was, so even if you’re unsure about whether to go, I definitely think you should.

We went to a few restaurants based off of online recommendations, but one of the most popular ones we went to was Hattie B’s, a chicken restaurant.

It’s really famous, as seen by the line stretching all the way out the door! It was so crowded that we tried to go there two other times, but couldn’t find parking. The only reason we ended up going was because our air bnb was just down the street, so we actually walked there and avoided the parking altogether!

IMG_6246IMG_6247

You know when you’re traveling and you have one of those moments that makes you realize just how small the world really is? I had one of those moments while standing in line outside of this restaurant.

I was wearing a shirt for the college my sister goes to, and the people behind us struck up a conversation, asking if we lived in the college town. I told them no, but told them the name of the city we actually do live in. Please excuse me saying “city” a lot of times as I attempt to tell this story without actually giving away where I live. The daughter, who I think was a junior in college said, “oh my gosh, my roommate is from that town!” With further conversation, we realized the girl’s roommate actually went to my high school and the roommate’s sister is in my grade.

I just think that’s so crazy! In Nashville, states away from where I live, we got in line right by someone whose best friend went to my school. What are the chances?

As for the restaurant, I’d say it was good and worth the wait, but not necessarily the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. I’d still go if you go to Nashville though, it’s a staple!

For the last portion of this post, I have some pictures of the most trendy and Instagram-worthy part of Nashville- all the murals there.

Me being me, I wanted to see some of the most famous Nashville murals and, of course, take pictures with them. On our last afternoon, we had a few hours of free time, and my parents kindly agreed to go driving all around Nashville, searching for various famous murals.

IMG_9624

Sadly, I don’t have many photos of them to share on here because all the pictures have me in them, but here’s one on the side of the road. I didn’t take a picture with this because it would be lie (I was not, in fact, born in Tennessee) but it showcases well how there are literally murals everywhere, just on the sides of random buildings on random streets.

We soon realized that the heart of Mural Nashville is actually in Hillsboro Village. This is a really cute area with a lot of restaurants, walkways, and 90% of the murals you see on Instagram. (The ‘I Believe in Nashville,’ the blue and white striped wall, the ‘Make Music Not War, etc.)

IMG_6273

I really liked this one! It was also in the Hillsboro Village. One thing I didn’t expect about the murals is that there were literally lines to take pictures with them- and I was there on a random Thursday afternoon in July.

The more popular ones had so many people waiting for a photo! I found it kind of awkward because a lot of people were somewhat watching, and I find it so hard to take a picture when I feel like people are staring. But it’s okay, it was worth it to see all the murals.

arrow

That concludes my Nashville trip! We did a few more things that I wasn’t able to document (Grand Ole Opry and tours of colleges), but this post covered the main Nashville experiences I had.

I hope this was enjoyable to read? I’m usually screaming about books on here, so it was odd (but fun) to talk about something different. If you want to go to Nashville, hopefully this could offer some recommendations of places to go or things to do.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful week!✨

Have you been to Nashville? Do you want to go? Would you have fangirled over the Taylor Swift stuff too? Have you had a “it’s a small world” moment? I’d love to talk with you in the comments.

  1. Ah, this post is so happy! I love seeing all the pictures from your travels and it makes me actually want to go to Nashville. And I’ve been before, I just haven’t done the country stuff in Nashville. And I want to see all the murals! Basically, I’ve just driven through Nashville and stopped by the Parthenon because that’s what you do when you’re a nerd, haha.
I think one of my biggest civil rights small world moments was when I visited the 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The KKK bombed the church and four young girls died. The person who led us around the church was alive at the time and attended the church as a child and still worshipped there today. It was so moving and it became so much more than a story to hear how the bombing impacted this man and his congregation.

    • Aww, thank you, Elizabeth! I hope you get to take a more in depth look at Nashville someday, it’s definitely a beautiful and interesting city. Haha, the Parthenon is super cool- I didn’t go on this trip, but I have gone in the past!
Wow, that sounds so powerful. Having a moment where history really comes alive is a such a moving thing for sure.

  2. This was totally an enjoyable read! I would probably freak out over different country stars, like Dolly, Johnny Cash, or George Strait :’) As of right now, I prefer older country music to newer. The world is a small place, how crazy that you met someone who is connected to you in a way! It sounds like you had a great trip, and I’m glad you decided to share it with us 🙂 xx

    • Thank you, Macey!💓Ahh, for sure. I haven’t listened to country oldies as much as I would like to, but there are definitely many iconic songs and artists in the country music genre. The world seriously is so small sometimes- thank you again for this lovely comment!

  4. Olivia, this post was SO enjoyable to read! You should definitely do more of them because I can just live vicariously through them? 😂 Weird, I know, but I’ve only ever been to America once, and it was the absolute best! I’ve always wanted to got back, but never been able to!

I’m so glad that you enjoyed your trip! Your pictures all look professional (definitely better than the ones I take), and you panorama turned out so well! My hand is too shaky to take good ones :”) The murals were all so beautiful, and ahhh, that story was so funny and cute!

    • Aww, Caitlin, thank you so, so much!!💛Ahh, if I travel anywhere else fun then I’ll post about it for sure. XD Where did you go in America, if you can say? (If not no worries :))

Thank youuu!! Agh, no, I’m definitely not a photography professional, but I had so much fun trying to get pictures.😂Thank you for this kind comment, it means a lot!!

  5. Ahaha that’s so cool you went to go see TS memorabilia and stuff!!! And yes, I’ve definitely had a small world moment- my aunt recently remarried, and her now-husband went to the same high school and was in the same grade as my dad’s older sister….. this wouldn’t be so weird if they hadn’t grown up in a small town where the high school had like 100kids all up haha. This was such a cool post to read, thank you for sharing Nashville with us!!! xx

    • Haha, I mean, of course I did…would I even be Olivia if I didn’t.😂Oh my gosh, that is such a small world moment! I always love the moment when you realize a connection like that and everyone is in awe and you can almost hear everyone’s minds being blown. Thank you so much for your comment, Rhi! ❤

  6. yay, olivia, thank you so much for sharing! i loved reading this one!
road trips are my favorites too, though ten hours does sound sort of extreme. whenever i go visit my grandparents, i spend around six hours on the road and i enjoy it a lot, but i think by the eight hour mark i’d be sort of bored already.
your trip was so american, hahah. i know it sounds ridiculous because of course, you’re in the us, but taking trips to visit colleges is not common in brazil at all. i’d love to visit american colleges one day, though! when i was in new york, we stopped by NYU and i got to see some of the buildings and even buy some souvenirs and i felt like a true american teenager, hahah.
it’s also amazing you got to see the national civil rights museum and other important landmarks for american history. i love touristing in historical places because of what you mentioned and it sounded like a really powerful experience indeed!
as for nashville as a city, i don’t know a ton about it, except from what i’ve seen from the show nashville, which is probably my #1 favorite show. and i’d have freaked out with the amount of taylor swift too!
(i’m low-key shocked that cowboy boots can cost up to 300$ though!)
and that whole story on waiting at the line!(!(#!)! i love when coincidences like that happen. i’m sure it must’ve been crazy at the time! also, can i just take a time to appreciate how friendly people are in the US? i remember waiting in line for ellen’s stardust diner in new york and this couple behind us just started conversation randomly, asking where we were from, if we were enjoying the city, showing pictures of their children, hahah. in brazil, we mostly stay at the superficial small talk, like the weather or how long the line is, lol.
the murals are gorgeous and i’d have loved to visit the opry, as in the show nashville, it is one of the most iconic places they perform at, as well as the bluebird cafe, that is an important location for the show, but also where i believe taylor swift was first discovered!
once again, thank you so much for sharing, olivia! this post made me want to visit nashville even more!

    • Aww, thank you, Lais!💗
Yeah, I feel that for sure. I usually get restless around four hours, and that’s when really start to drag on, haha. I’ve learned that listening to music really helps me get through though, and makes time go by faster.
Ahh, really?? I didn’t realize it was such an American trip, but that does make sense. I didn’t know people don’t really go tour colleges in Brazil, but you learn a new thing every day. That’s so interesting! It’s funny because most of the trips I’ve taken in the past year have been to tour colleges. Ooh, I haven’t been to New York but I’m going in the spring and I’m so excited!
      It was so powerful!
The amount of Taylor Swift was amazing. *cries* Speaking of, HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SHE IS COMING TO BRAZIL?? When I saw that, I instantly thought of you. I hope you’re able to go, I don’t know how far away it is from you or anything, but I’m so happy she’s coming to your country.
I know right, cowboy boots are very pricey. Even in my state, where they aren’t being sold to tourists, the legit ones are that much, too. I think it’s because of the leather being so expensive? I don’t understand, lol.
It was! Aww, that’s such a nice story. I guess I don’t really think about the friendliness level of people in the US, but that’s so true! Especially because I live in the south-ish and that increases the friendliness level by a lot too, lol. I’m used to random conversations with strangers in lines, in fact, it would be weirder if we didn’t talk to each other.😂
Yes!! I didn’t go to the Bluebird Cafe, but yes, for sure. It was CRAZY because Carrie Underwood happened to be performing at the Opry the day I went, which was completely unplanned.
Thank you so, so much for this kind comment! It made my day and I always love chatting with you.

  7. I lived in TN for a year, an hour away from Chattanooga in a small town called Copperhill. I never went to Nashville but I so wanted to!! Does Nashville have McKay’s?? It’s basically a huge storage-store of books, movies and memorabilia. The book selection is freaking massive and so cheap!! I know there’s one in Chattanooga and some other parts of TN.

  11. Ahhh your Nashville post! Okay, I haven’t been yet, but I am planning on it-hopefully sooner than later.
Wow, I didn’t know the motel where MLK was shot is really close to a major road. And the motel with its interesting railing looks exactly like the imprint I have in my head of a picture from the time. I’m guessing the cars parked near it are from the period? Yea, I know what you mean by that feeling of things you learn in the classroom colliding with real life. I felt that when I visited the church of the Birmingham church bombing.
I really wonder why cowboy boots are a thing-I just realized that cowboy boots are basically something a couple states in one country wear out of the whole world. Hm, what does this say about cowboy boots?
The panorama picture is very cool. I think I need to take more panoramas now. How do they even work?? Oh, last week in physics I learned the real reason why you’re not supposed to go in elevators when there’s a fire. I always thought you would kind of melt because the fire would cook you inside the metal box, but it’s actually because the smoke would mess with the light sensors and the doors wouldn’t close. So instead of being trapped inside, you would be unable to be trapped.
Ahhh, I love that you were able to see so much Taylor Swift stuff!
Wow, that’s a very cool small world moment. Do you know the little sister who’s in your grade?
I love murals! But I do not like taking pictures when others are watching either.
Was Vanderbilt one of the colleges you toured?
And I loved this travel post even though I know it’s not what you normally do :))

    Liked by 1 person

    • Ahh, that’s so exciting. Are you wanting to tour any colleges in Nashville, or do you think you’ll go just to see the city in general? Oh, yes, the motel picture is a recreation of the exact spot where MLK was assassinated. They have the cars from the period and the motel front exactly as it was then! Ahh, it’s a really crazy feeling, I know.
Honestly, I am a little confused by cowboy boots. The other day I saw this picture of the US and all the states had a different emoji and the Texas emoji was just the cowboy hat head emoji and nothing has ever been truer, but it was also a sad moment for me when I realized I live in Cowboy Boot Country.
Panoramas ARE cool, but I have no idea how they work. To be honest, I don’t even really know how cameras work, it’s just something I take for granted. XD
Whoa! So, by unable to be trapped, do you mean that the doors wouldn’t close to block off the fire?
      Aww, thank you, haha!
I know, right! I actually do know the little sister- not personally, but she went to my middle school too so I’ve known of her for a while now.
I’m glad someone agrees with me on this- taking pictures in front of other people is a unique form of torture.
Yes, I did tour Vanderbilt! I didn’t actually end up liking it that much, which was sad because the main reason I went to Nashville was because I really thought I wanted to go there. But I did end up loving Belmont!!
Thank you so much, Annie! ❤
