Why My Favorite Character in Harry Potter is Harry Potter // ft. Screaming, Ships, & Many Gifs

I love talking about Harry Potter.

Whether I’m screaming about the plot, the characters, my ships, the movies, or the fact that I really want to get my Hogwarts acceptance letter, it’s pretty much a guarantee that I’m always talking about it in one way or another.

In typical Olivia fashion, I’ll be doing that yet again on this post. 😉 Today I’m going to be talking about a character who I think is slightly underappreciated despite being the protagonist of the entire series- Harry Potter himself.

Blog Title - Design #1 (1)

I know, I know. On the surface level, it seems like Harry does get a lot of appreciation, but when I really started to think about it, I realized that I’ve never really heard anyone say he was their favorite character. More popular answers are Hermione, Ron, and even Snape or Draco.

This makes me sad, because Harry Potter is one of my most favorite characters of all time. He is my small, sassy, lovable child and I will protect him with my life. So, I have put together a list of reasons that Harry Potter is my favorite character in Harry Potter. Disclaimer: There will not be explicit spoilers in this post, but there will be references to occurrences throughout the series. Without further rambling we all know I could ramble forever, let’s get into the post!

1. He accepts who he is and what he has to do.

I mean, if I were an ordinary boy (who sometimes had not-so-ordinary things happen to me, but for the most part, my life was typical) and then one day a giant man named Hagrid came to tell me I was magical and, oh by the way, I’m an international wizard celebrity and everyone knows me, I don’t know how I’d react.

After his initial shock, Harry accepts his role extremely well.

Throughout the series, he always steps up to the challenge of being The Boy Who Lived. He shakes the hand of strangers, he stands up to Voldemort, and when he hears what his fate is, he doesn’t back away even though he had no choice in this.

MY HEART. Harry is just so pure and sweet and he takes on the role of Harry Potter so well, it makes me want to hug him all the time.

2. He is such a realistic and relatable character.

I touched on this a little bit in my last Harry Potter post, but Harry is genuinely one of the most realistic characters I have ever had the privilege of reading about.

He has no idea how to talk to girls, first of all. He’s completely clueless and relies on Hermione for advice (which, of course, confuses all the other girls because they all think he likes her). I absolutely love how J.K. Rowling didn’t portray him as someone who had an easy time making conversation with girls, or anyone else, really, because it just makes him so realistic and relatable.

hermione @ harry basically in all of OOTP

Another time he’s realistic is when he has his…let’s call it his whiny phase in the fifth book. I’ll admit, I did get a tiny bit frustrated, but it was completely understandable. In fact, it would have been unrealistic if he had never reached a point where he just couldn’t take everything anymore.

Being Harry Potter is a lot of responsibility that he didn’t ask for, and he’s not an automaton or some kind of golden boy- he’s human, he’s a teenager, and it makes sense that he would have, well, a few moments of weakness. And I love him even more for it.

3. He’s so incredibly kind to everyone.

Half the time when I’m rereading the series, I’m just a puddle of happiness because Harry may just be the kindest and purest soul out there.

I can list out multiple instances throughout the series that show just how sweet he is, and you know what? I’ll do that now. 😉

  • He doesn’t ever ignore little Ginny. In the first few books, when Ginny has a massive crush on him, he never once ignores her. He doesn’t brush her off, he’s just continuously kind to her and never makes her feel embarrassed.
  • He’s there for Neville. Remember when he gets back Neville’s Remembrall in that infamous illegal flying session which earned him his spot on the Quidditch team? And remember when he chooses Neville over people considered ‘popular,’ because he sticks with his friends no matter what?
  • He saves Peter Pettigrew’s life. He saves Peter’s life when it’s obviously not the ideal choice, simply because he doesn’t want Lupin and Sirius to be murderers since he knows his dad would not have wanted it.
  • He’s so inclusive to Luna. Like the time he invites her to Slughorn’s party, just because she’s his friend and he doesn’t care that other people judge her.
  • He’s Hermione’s shoulder to cry on. In the dark days of The Half-Blood Prince, when Hermione and Ron are at odds, he’s there for Hermione in a platonic love kind of way that melts my heart.
  • He went to Nearly Headless Nick’s deathday party. I mean, what twelve-year-old boy chooses to go to a ghost’s party instead of a Halloween feast?! Harry Potter, the purest soul alive, that’s who.

I could go on, I promise. But I’ll stop here because I think I’ve given ample evidence of how pure, sweet, and kind Harry Potter is.

4. He’s complete Ginny Weasley trash, and it’s adorable.

I am 10000000% behind the Harry and Ginny ship, and I will never stop talking about it.

Image result for ginny and harry chamber of secrets gif

Agh, look how little my babies are. *resolidifies from puddle of happiness I melted into*

I love how they grow up together, I love how Harry saves her when they’re just smol little children, I love how they watch each other date other people before realizing their real feelings, I love how Ginny doesn’t need Harry to be strong, but most of all I love the epilogue in the last book.

All right, my rant about Harry + Ginny is over, but my rant on why Harry-in-love-with-Ginny is utterly adorable has not even started yet. Here are a few pins that I found on Pinterest, and I think they pretty much sum up my feelings.

Lol. Guess he found his true love. (and yes I have read all the books. 6 times in a row)Ginny made harry Happy

THESE ARE SO SWEET, and so true. I noticed the relationship between Harry and Ginny when I reread the books this past summer, and it was honestly such a healthy relationship and the way Harry treats and adores Ginny just makes me love him even more.

arrow

5. He just wants to make his parents proud.

Harry is constantly thinking about his parents and what he can do to make them proud. This makes my heart very, very happy.

Image result for mum dad harry potter gif

I love reading about characters that love and respect their parents, because that is something that’s really important to me. When characters always go against their parents’ wishes and just overall dislike them I’m just like ….?

But Harry Potter isn’t like that. Even though he doesn’t have any memories of his parents, he tries to live like he thinks they would have wanted him too, and I can’t describe how happy that makes me.

Throughout the series, he’s always trying to learn more about his parents and the life they were able to live, and I feel like part of the reason he gets so invested in the Order is because his parents were so invested in it.

arrow

6. He never considers abandoning the wizarding world in its time of need.

The wizarding world needed Harry Potter. Without him, Voldemort could never be defeated. And did he once think about leaving? Did he ever consider leaving all his problems behind? Did he abandon them in search of safety?

I believe the answer is no.

That just makes me really proud of him, and it shows how admirable his character truly is. It says a lot that he willing put his life at risk after knowing about the wizarding world for less than year. And he continues to do so again and again. I love him too much, okay?!

arrow

7. He’s a really good friend.

I can’t imagine that being Harry Potter’s friend would be easy.

He’s a celebrity, so everyone will always be in his business and consequently in yours. He’s always going off to save the world, so it’s likely your life will be in danger. Not to mention that you’d guess he’d be stuck-up and arrogant.

Yet, Harry is such a good friend.

Image result for harry ron hermione gif

When Ron gets upset with Harry about the Triwizard Tournament, he forgives him. When Hermione needs Harry to let out her feelings, he listens to her. When Luna doesn’t have anyone, he becomes her friend. He befriends Dobby, Hagrid, ghosts- everyone who doesn’t have anyone, he becomes their friend.

I love him for that.

I could go on and on about Harry Potter for ages, but I think it’s time this post come to close. 😉 It may or may not already be at 1350 words. I love writing posts about Harry Potter because I truly have so much passion for this series and these characters- this post was written in just one sitting, because the words kept flowing out of my fingertips and I had absolutely no loss of things to say.

If you made it this far, cheers to you, and thank you for following along. I hope you enjoyed my rant of why Harry Potter is my favorite character, and let me know if you’d like to see even more Harry Potter posts in the future. Wishing you a magical day!⚡️

Who is your favorite character in Harry Potter, and why? Do you love Harry as much as me? What is your Hogwarts house? I’d love to chat with you all in the comments.

  1. This is such a great post Olivia and it’s true, now that I think about it, I’m hearing a lot of favorites being Hermione, Ron or even Draco, but rarely hear about Harry Potter being in that favorite’s place. I have to say that, sometimes, Harry kind of annoyed me, but like you perfectly mentioned it, it also felt very realistic. I mean, the poor little boy has sooooooo much falling onto him, I would have broken down so many times haha, he’s allowed to be whiny every now and then, even if it was bothering, it was also so, very realistic. 🙂 And the friendship, yes, I just love how Harry is always such a great friend, that’s one of the best things about him ❤

    • Thank you so much, Marie!💘I agree- it’s almost like everyone thinks Harry is too cliché of an answer, so nobody uses it. XD I see where you’re coming from with him being whiny and a little annoying (mostly in the fifth book, I feel like) but haha, same, I would have taken it so much worse than he did. Aww, Harry IS such a good friend. Thank you for your comment, I hope you have a lovely day! 🙂

    • Hi Olivia! I know this post is old, but I stumbled across it just barely, and you have no idea how happy it made me! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I’ve had friends who talk about why they don’t like Harry or why he annoys them, etc., etc. And it seems like reading people’s opinions on the Internet (never a great idea😂) makes that so much more prominent. I’ve always struggled with listening to this because I adore Harry. Hermione was my favorite character when I was younger, but getting into my high school years, it’s completely transition to Mr. H. Potter himself. I know it shouldn’t matter to me what others think, and the fact that I love Harry should be enough for me, but it feels lonely when all you seem to hear is negative opinions about something (or someone) you like. Everything you said in the post resonated with me, and it was such a joy to read. I guess knowing that there are other Harry Potter fans who love Harry as a character makes me feel more confident and secure about my own love for him. It shouldn’t be that way, probably, but it helps when you know you’re not alone. So thank you so much for your beautiful post, it meant a lot!

      • Hi, Lyn!! Oh, wow, this comment made me smile so much. Thank you very much for taking the time to comment!💗I appreciate it so much, and of course I would ALWAYS love to talk about Harry, he’s my absolute favorite.

I’m sorry there’s so much negativity about Harry surrounding you! I hope this post helped bring some positivity and show you that you’re not alone in loving his character. He’s just so funny, sweet, a great friend, and altogether brave and adorable and I LOVE HIM. This comment means so much to me because I understand exactly where you’re coming from, and I’m so happy you don’t feel as alone anymore! Thank you again, and I hope you have a lovely day.

  2. Ahhh I love seeing (reading) you gush about Harry Potter, your posts are always so full of love and genuine excitement & passion.

My favorites are Hermione & Luna, and I’m a Ravenclaw. I think you knew that already, though, hehe. And I guess we know now whom you’d pick for the collab. 🤓

    Wonderful post, Olivia! 💛💛

    • Thank you Lily, that means so much!💓I just love talking about Harry Potter so much, it may be a little too much of an addiction, oops. XD

I LOVE Hermione and Luna. They’re definitely up there in my list of favorites, along with many others. Haha, maybe! I’m honestly not sure what books I’d pick for Harry, though.🙈I’ll have to think about it for sure. (And oh, I’ll make sure to get back to you on Hangouts soon!)

Thank you again, Lily, I’m so happy you enjoyed it and thank you for the wonderful comment!

  3. I love this! I don’t get why people hate on Harry because he’s so sweet and brave. I think the movie ruined Ginny/Harry ship and Hermione and Harry, or even Luna/Harry, had more chemistry.

    • I KNOW, RIGHT. Harry deserves so much more love for just being the best out there.🙌🏼Also, yes- I thought Bonnie Wright was great, but the way the movie people portrayed Harry and Ginny’s relationship was not how the books did, and I think a lot of people don’t like it because they don’t know how sweet and slow and pure and it really was in the books. *deep breath* Thank you for reading, Elizabeth!

OH MY GOODNESS. olivia. it makes me absolutely so happy to be able to have someone share my feelings about Harry!! i love him so much i can’t even. he’s my amazing little wizard child and i will always love him no matter what. i literally feel you with everything in this post. i can’t even explain my love for him, and throughout the entire series i was able to see him grow stronger and stronger.
to be honest, i do feel like Harry is so overlooked and so many people don’t feel for him??? but i don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t. he’s such an overall amazing friend to everyone and i love his friendships with Ron and Hermione. there’s just this unbreakable trust between them and ah i just LOVE THEM. 💖
i cannot tell you how much i enjoyed this post!! it literally melted my heart with happiness.
    have a magical day! ✨

    • AHHH, SYDNEY. First of all hi, I hope you’re doing well and school is going great and you’re enjoying your hiatus. I feel like it’s been so long!💓Second of all, this comment is everything and my heart is singing with happiness.
I can’t explain my love for him, either! (Although I just spent an entire post trying, oops.) Harry is my amazing little wizard child too, and I cannot understand how someone could NOT love him as dearly as we do. He IS so overlooked, and it’s so sad because he’s just such a genuinely good person and a forever iconic character.
Awwwh, this comment made MY heart melt with happiness. I love talking about Harry Potter with someone just as passionate about it as me. Thank you so much, Sydney, wishing you a magical day as well!⚡️

      • AHHH. aww… hi!! thank you so much! i hope you’re doing okay! haha, to be completely honest, i know i’m supposed to be on hiatus, but when i saw this post i couldn’t help but comment. XD
aw, me too!! ❤ i think you took all the words out of my mouth when it comes to harry being my favorite character. he's just… i can't explain. but, he's simply amazing and i don't understand how anyone couldn't love him. i feel like he isn't really "overlooked", i just feel he doesn't get much recognition for his part in the series. he has so much more to what people think of him, i just feel he doesn't get the credit for it.
you are the sweetest, Olivia!! i melted with happiness at the sight of this post haha!! i don't have many close friends who love harry potter so i never really can share my passions about it with anybody! i'm glad you gave me the chance to. thank you so much, and you too. ⚡

          Yes! Just yes.
Aww, I feel the same way! I don’t know a lot of people in real life that love Harry Potter as passionately as we do, and it’s so fun to talk about it together.

  5. I LOVE THIS POST SO MUCH. I was actually just thinking about this the other day – that nobody ever says Harry Potter is their favourite character in Harry Potter and I just feel so bad and slightly guilty about it (I’m a Hermione girl through and through – but I love Ginny and Tonks so much too it’s insane). He’s an actual ray of sunshine and I would love having him as a friend so much. He’s just not a mean person and who wouldn’t want the kindest person around as their friend all the time!! The part about Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday party is the PERFECT example. And the way he loves Hagrid unconditionally and always supports him I just….I love Harry Potter so much.

    Thank you for this post!!

    • THANK YOU SO MUCH, ERIN.❤️Ahh, same here. (I spend a lot of my time thinking about Harry Potter.) Oh, I do love Hermione and Ginny and Tonks too! They’re wonderful characters, and I feel like the three of them plus Luna and Mrs. Weasley are the epitome of girl power. Harry IS a ray of sunshine! That’s such a good way to describe him. Awe, I love the part too when Hagrid thinks no one will like him anymore since he’s half giant and Harry, Ron, and Hermione almost break down his door knocking and yelling that they don’t care. MY HEART.

No, thank you for your comment and for reading! It means so much that you enjoyed it, and I’m super happy you did. 🙂

  6. Harry is my fave pumpkin also. 😀 The funny thing is, I actually didn’t like Hermione as a character much when I was younger despite her being a bookworm. She’s just so rude to everyone, and I feel like she’s never really called out on it! She’s a fab character but she had her faults!

    • Ahh, I’m so happy to hear! Harry is a precious little cinnamon roll. 😉 Oh, I kind of see what you mean about Hermione! She definitely can be bossy and a know-it-all sometimes, but I just can’t help but love her. XD

  7. When I was younger I had the biggest crush on Harry imaginable. Of course I moved on and went through my bad boy phase with Draco Malfoy and eventually settled for Sirius Black but Harry still has a special place in my heart. He is so good.

  8. I’m so happy you made this post! I agree completely!! I love Harry and he’s so under-appreciated it’s becoming annoying. I love grey, nuanced characters and he’s such a great example of that. He’s a good person but not perfect either and well from reading your article I know you get it so I won’t ramble more 😉

  9. *screams* THIS IS MY FAVORITE POST IN THE HISTORY OF POSTS AAHHHHHHHHHHH

  10. This post was so much fun to read! It’s easy to tell that you are super passionate about this series and the characters, which is awesome. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed how great of a character Harry is until I read this. I understood that he was great because he was the boy who lived, but there’s also so much more. Like he’s perfect in all the tiny things (he’s kind, a good friend, loyal, brave, humble) but he’s still not perfect at everything (like talking to girls) which is so lovable. He’s also incredibly relatable through all 7 books. I guess I just took him for granted, but he is amazing. And he just might be my favorite character too???

  11. Oh wait, you’re right- I don’t think I’ve heard someone talk about how much they love Harry before. Usually it’s Hermione. Here’s another post for me to go back and truly fangirl about after I read the books- which will happen, I promise. :))

  12. oh. my. goodness. YES. X INFINITY. This post was SO much fun to read, and I absolutely agree with you on every point! Harry Potter, as in the series, is iconic and will last throughout literature history, but Harry Potter as in the character is so underappreciated and underrated. EVERYONE needs to read this post and show our love for Harry!! *takes a deep breathe* oh, how I miss commenting here… 😉

great post as always, Olivia ❤

  13. You’re so right, Harry is really overlooked as a favorite character, which I’m not sure I ever noticed until reading your post! I was really impressed when wrapping up my reread last month with what a unique person Harry is and what a perfect protagonist he was for the series, and your post sums it all up so well!

    Liked by 1 person

    • He really is! But a lot of people, like you, have commented saying how much they love him, so that makes me happy. 😉 I really got to know Harry better during my reread, too! There’s something about going back with a new perspective that makes him an even better character. Thanks for your comment, Dani!

  14. This is SUCh a sweet post and honestly changed my mind about Harry A LOT. I remember thinking “ugh Harry’s so whiny and such a typical character and ‘the chosen one’ and acts as a special snowflake” but wow, you have actually convinced me a lot. I honestly have never appreciated what a good-hearted and kind character he is, and this post is amazing. And I’ve never shipped Ginny and Harry so much but now I’m starting to think they’re amazing!? This has truly changed my opinions towards Harry – I think I should re-read the series to see what I think about him now?
